students to an intermediate level of English and provided them with
a strong foundation in the language. It mostly comprised of writing
and communication skills, an emphasis on functional English,

extensive media assets of the Financial Times and other sources,
this course offered a highly authoritative and flexible range of
material. It was designed to develop real-life communicative skills
& powers of self expression through real-time interaction.

Academic English (LAN101 X 3) The primary focus of this course
was to encourage Ss to engage critically with the language, whether
spoken/written, and to question the validity of ideas. Emphasis was
placed on recognizing fact from opinion and detecting author bias.

Communication & Technical Writing (LAN104 X 2) This course was
designed to meet the basic communication needs of Civil Engineering
and Architecture Ss. As such, it covered issues of purpose and
style while allowing Ss plenty of focused practice with short
writing exercises. The course was organized to review the basic
elements of written communication that are involved in technical
writing tasks and engage Ss in editing, revising, and evaluating
technical writing. Major topics covered Manual instructions How to

General Advanced English (LAN100 X 2) This was an integrated
skills course designed to help Ss build upon their existing
competence in English. The course focused on the skills Ss need to
function effectively in an academic environment, with special focus
on vocabulary acquisition. Ss were encouraged to improve their oral
communication through delivering informative presentations. Major
topics covered Oral Informative Presentations Modes of writing
Reading comprehension Determining authors purposes Business
Communication for Management (LAN201 X 1) This course aimed at
helping Ss become more efficient speakers and writers, preparing
them for challenges at the workplace. Throughout the course,
emphasis was placed on written and oral language as a way of
improving communication. Major topics covered Memo / Email / Letter
