Was ist der IPCC• Mandate and Membership of the IPCC • Recognizing the problem of potential global climate change,

the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988.

• The role of the IPCC is to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of risk of human-induced climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. The IPCC does not carry out research nor does it monitor climate related data or other relevant parameters. It bases its assessment mainly on peer reviewed and published scientific/technical literature. Its role, organisation, participation and general procedures are laid down in the "Principles Governing IPCC Work"

Arbeitsgruppen im IPCC• The IPCC has three Working Groups

– Working Group I assesses the scientific aspects of the climate system and climate change.

– Working Group II assesses the vulnerability of socio-economic and natural systems to climate change, negative and positive consequences of climate change, and options for adapting to it.

– Working Group III assesses options for limiting greenhouse gas emissions and otherwise mitigating climate change.

UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol

• Most countries joined an international treaty -- the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) -- to consider what can be done to reduce global warming and to cope with whatever temperature increases are inevitable.

• Recently, a number of nations have approved an addition to the treaty: the Kyoto Protocol, which has more powerful (and legally binding) measures.

Der 4th assessment report

• Der Report ist 2007 erschienen. • Erster Kernsatz:

– Changes in the atmospheric abundance of greenhouse gases and aerosols, in solar radiation and in land surface properties alter the energy balance of the climate system. These changes are expressed in terms of radiative forcing.

Was ist Radiative Forcing??


• Radiative forcing• Radiative forcing is the change in the net vertical

irradiance (in Wm−2) at the tropopause due to an internal change or a change in the external forcing of the climate system, such as, for example, a change in the concentration of carbon dioxide or the output of the Sun. Usually radiative forcing is computed after allowing for stratospheric temperatures to readjust to radiative equilibrium, but with all tropospheric properties held fixed at their unperturbed values.
