Freedom. It is ingrained within us. It is part of our very being, and we walk with it every day. We take it for granted, of course, as we do with all such things that are ingrained within us. Un-til it is threatened or taken away. Then we rise up, we fight back, we restore, and it is at those times that we wonder how we could ever take something so valuable for granted.

Our nation has gone through great times of turmoil in its history, times which threatened this very freedom, like now. In every time, we rose up and did the right things, the things we need-ed to do, to ensure that our children and grandchildren would live to enjoy the right to freedom, or to put it another way, would live to take for granted this thing that is ingrained within them.

In this nation, freedom is a right. The dictionary defines right in this sense as “having a just claim” or “something that one may properly claim as due.” This right to freedom is built into our nation. However, the funny thing is that you can’t really find this kind of “right” in the Bible. There’s certainly not a lot of instances in the NKJV, and never can you find a right to freedom.

What you do find is the blessing of freedom. That is a different thing. A blessing is an act of grace, a gift, not something that one can claim to possess. 2 Co 3:17 states, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Again, in Gal 5, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Whether it’s a right or a blessing, there’s always a price to pay for freedom. For our nation, men and women have given up their lives, their loved ones, in order to pay the price that the right to freedom at times demands. For the blessing of freedom as described in the Scripture, you need look no further than the cross of Calvary to find the cost for that blessing.

As this Independence Day draws near, in a year that in many ways is just stupendously crazy on so many fronts, may we remember again the cost of freedom, and the price that has been paid. And maybe, if we do that, we’ll take it a little less for granted, and work a little harder to make sure everyone has the right to be free. And while we’re at it, by the power of the Holy Spirit, let us also work a little harder to help all people receive the blessing of freedom. That’s the far more important, and eternal, freedom. God bless you all!
