Mary, Mother of GodFeast Day: January 1

Since the early days of Christianity, Mary has been known by the title “Mother of God” because she

gave birth to Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. Each year on January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.

Mary has a special place in our hearts because of her relationship to Jesus. Over the years she has been given many different titles, such as “Queen of All Saints” and “Our Lady of Lourdes.” All of these titles reflect her special place as the Mother of God.

St. PatrickFeast Day: March 17

St. Patrick lived about 400 years after Jesus. He was a Roman citizen living in the area that is now England when he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. His life was hard, but he kept his faith in God and finally escaped back to his home.

Now safe and sound, Patrick had a vision of the people of Ireland calling him back to bring the message of the gospel to them.

Patrick did go back, and he became the most beloved leader of the Irish church. Many stories are told of this great saint, including that he taught the people the mystery of the Holy Trinity by using a shamrock. As the Holy Trinity is three Persons yet one God, so the shamrock has three leaves but is one plant.

Fill in all spaces marked

with a "+", and Leave spaces

marked with a "•" blank

Holy Trinity.

Feast Day: March 19

St. Joseph was more than a simple carpenter. As head of the Holy Family, he protected Mary and Jesus from Herod’s persecution, guided them safely through challenging travels and supported them through his daily work. As a just and “righteous man,” he served as Jesus’ spiritual model. Pope Pius IX proclaimed Saint Joseph the patron of the Universal Church. We, too, can and should benefit from Joseph’s example.

The family is often called the Domestic Church. By working, praying, serving and playing together, parents and children bring Christ’s image and presence into their homes, towns and parishes. Spend some time in prayer with your family. Thank them for all that they do. How can you be a better member of your family?

Complete this crossword puzzle about St. Joseph.

John the BaptistFeast Day: June 24

If John the Baptist lived today, people might call him a “strange dude.” He ate locusts and wild honey. He dressed in camel’s skins and wore a leather belt. He lived in the desert.

John the Baptist was a prophet who spoke the truth. He baptized many people who could hear that truth and admit their sins. But when John told the truth about Herod, he was arrested and eventually killed because of it.

John told the truth about himself too: When the people wanted to know if he was the Messiah, he said no. He spoke about Jesus, calling him “the Lamb of God.” John said, “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30).

Mazes, crosswords and more activities and fun await you! Inside this booklet, you will find puzzles and activities to help you learn about the saints.

How Do You Become a Saint? In the Catholic Church , saints are named by the Vatican, the home of the pope and Church leaders. A person is canonized (declared a saint) when the Church determines that she or he has received the fullness of salvation in heaven.

Martyrs are saints who were killed because they were Christians. Saints are good examples of virtue. They intercede for us with their prayers. A miracle sometimes takes place through a saint’s prayers. The first step to canonization is being called Venerable, then Blessed and finally saint. The saint you were named for at your baptism is your patron saint.
