Introduction:

As we approach our study on the Dynamics of Faith, we see from 2 Cor. 5:1-10 that faith is the very essence of the Christian life. Faith relates to the past, the present and the future. Faith is the link that joins us to our Eternal Creator and His promises for us. Without faith the Word has no reality, prayer has no purpose and we have no salvation. Let us look at some statements concerning our faith:

Heb. 11:6 ~ without faith we cannot please God. Heb. 11:3 ~ gives us an understanding of God’s ways. Heb. 10:23 ~ faith needs to be maintained. Mark 9:23 ~ faith releases the hand of God. Mark 6:5-6 ~ lack of faith ties the hand of God. Heb. 4:2 ~ it can make the Word of God void. Mark 1:15 ~ faith is the second word of the gospel.

We must differentiate between faith as mentioned above, and “the faith” as mentioned in Jude 3; Rev. 2:13; 1 Pet. 5:9; etc. The word “faith” used here, is a noun, which means a creed or doctrine to be believed. We will however, deal with “faith” as a verb, which is the ascent of the whole person to the truth of what is declared by another; resting upon His authority and veracity, without evidence of any other kind. Hebrews 11:1.

1. THE DEFINITION OF FAITH.

1. THE DEFINITION OF FAITH. 1.1 SUBSTITUTES FOR FAITH.

a) It is not Natural Faith. 2 Thess. 3:2 All people have natural faith, exercised daily in various ways, in the natural sense realm. However, not all have Spiritual faith. Natural faith rests and trusts itself wholly to things seen, visible and temporal.

b) It is not Mental assent. Jas. 2:17-20

To simply agree with, or give mental assent to a set of doctrines, or a specific truth, is not Bible faith. This is a head faith, not from the heart. It is a dead faith. True faith must have corresponding actions.

c) It is not presumption. Psalm 19:12-13

Presumption is often mistaken for faith. It imitates, and looks like faith. It imitates the faith actions of others, without personally having faith in and by the Word of God. Num. 14:40-45; Heb. 11:29. Presumption is: To act without God’s specific instruction. John 5:19; 14:10,11. See diagram 1 and 2

What is Presumption?

1. To Act without a Word - Heb. 11:29

2. When the Timing is wrong -

~ To early - Abraham, Moses

~ To late - Numb. 14:44

3. Imitate the Faith actions of others - Acts 19:13-16

4. An Act of Repetition - repeating a previous faith action without

consulting the Lord

d) It is not self-confidence. Phil. 3:3-9; John 15:5 God strips His own saints of all self-confidence along the road of self-effort and failure. Examples are: Moses, Israel, Peter, Abraham, etc.

1.2 BIBLE FAITH IS:

a) Firstly, faith is not a feeling! Faith is a decision, which we make with an act of our will, based on the Word of God.

b) To have “Faith” means:

To have “trust, assurance, confidence in another, or another’s word”. To believe what God has said, that His Word is true, and what He said, He will perform. Acts 16:31 (Ampl.)

c) The Bible definition of Faith. Heb. 11:1. The Amplified Bible reads: “Faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title-deed) of things we hope for, being the proof of things we do not see, and the conviction of their reality - faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses.

d) It is a Spiritual sense. Heb. 5:14

Faith is a Spiritual sense exercised in the realm of things unseen, invisible and eternal. The spiritual senses are the counterpart of the five natural senses. Ps. 34:8; Mat. 5:8; Acts 17:27-28; Ps. 45:8; Rev. 2:11.

2. THE DEVELOPMENT OF FAITH. 2.1 THE FOUR LEVELS OF FAITH There are four levels of Faith we can experience in the Lord.

a) Romans 12:3 tells us that the Lord has dealt a measure of faith to everyone. This of course only refers to a “born again” person. This initial measure of faith, which is dealt to everyone, is the result of the “new birth”. John 3:3-5.

The Scripture says that without the new birth we cannot see the Kingdom of God, nor can we enter in. Therefore at the new birth we receive a God consciousness which we did not have before. We receive an inner assurance that all is well with our soul.

b) Romans 10:17 then is a means by which we can increase our faith,

or build upon the initial measure, which was given to us at the new birth. To do this we must - “not forsake the assembling of ourselves together” - Heb. 10:25, because as - Eph. 4:11-16 says: the ministry is there to strengthen our faith. We must not neglect the reading of the Word. 1 Peter 2:2. Prayerful meditation on the Word allows the Holy Spirit to reveal the truths to our heart. Josh. 1:8; and Ps. 1:1-3.

c) Galatians 5:22 says that our faith also increases as we mature in the

Lord. We go through various experiences in life, and we see the hand of the Lord upon our situations, and as a result we learn to trust Him more.

d) 1 Corinthians 12:9 speaks of the Gift of Faith. This is not a level of

faith, which we can have permanently, but rather a manifestation of the Holy Spirit, the same as the other 8 gifts. It is a special impartation of the Lord’s irresistible and unfailing faith, for a special moment or need.

2.2 THE FOUR STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR FAITH Let us now look at the four stages in which faith develops within us. Hebrews 11:1 gives us the definition. We see here that four words are used, which each convey a message, and also show us the four stages in the development of our faith. They are, Hope, Faith, Substance and Evidence. Let us now look at what these four words convey to us:

a) Hope - Desire and Hope go hand in hand. Jesus had much to say about desire. Mat. 15:28 ~ Let it be to you as you desire.

Mark 11:24 ~ Whatever you desire when you pray……. John 5:6 ~ “Do you want to be made well?” John 4:10 ~ “If you would have asked…” John 7:37 ~ “If anyone thirsts…”

Let us therefore break up the fallow ground of indifference and defeat and reach out to the Lord. Jer. 4:3; Hos. 10:12.

b) Faith - From hope, which has no assurance and its ground being a

probability or possibility, we move on to faith, which comes by hearing the Word. The Word of God throws light on the situation and the doubt disappears. However faith can still be a dead faith, we may hear the Word but if we do not accept it, the process of growth ceases.

c) Substance – This speaks of a living motivating force. It flows from the heart and is created by the Word, because it has not only been heard, but also accepted.

d) Evidence - This then, is the outward evidence, the proof obvious to

the eyes and ears of the onlookers that we have accepted the Word. This is expressed through

What we say: Prov. 18:20-21; 6:2; Mk. 11:23; Rom. 10:9-10; Jas. 3:6. What we do: Jas. 2:14-17; 21-23.

To Summarize: Hope is like the soil in your garden. Faith is like the seed sown. (the Word of God) Substance is when the seed releases its life, and growth is

commenced. Evidence is when the new growth breaks through the surface, and

we see the evidence.

Four stages in the development of our FAITH

1/ Hope or Desire is the soil for faith to grow in.

We may need to do some ploughing to break

up the fallow ground

2/ Faith is like the seed sown.

The word of God.

3/ Substance is when the seed releases it’ life.

It’s the inner excitement and life

that comes from hearing the Word

before any outward evidence is seen.

4/ Evidence is when the new growth

breaks through the surface

3. THE SOURCE OF FAITH.

3.1 FAITH BY THE WORD OF GOD. Faith comes by hearing a Word from God! In the Greek language there are two words, which are both, translated as “Word.” They are the words Logos and Rhema. These words, however, are quite different in their use. In John 1:1 we find the word Logos translated as Word, and in Romans 10:17 we find the word Rhema translated as Word. It could be best explained this way:

a) Logos is "The Word" of God, found from cover to cover in your Bible.

b) Rhema is "A Word" from God, revealed by the Holy Spirit, sometimes from "The Word" of God, sometimes from other sources.

Therefore it is important that we meditate in the Word of God, (Logos) ,and give the Holy Spirit opportunity to reveal a Word to us, (Rhema). Jos. 1:8; Ps. 1. Now it is interesting that Faith does not come by hearing the Logos, but by the hearing of a Rhema. Rom. 10:17. So, I start by believing the Logos, and trusting or resting upon it, - then the Holy Spirit quickens to me a Rhema. I can then act my faith, and take a step of faith, and claim God's promise.

3.2 HOW DOES "A WORD" FROM THE LORD, COME TO US? Faith comes by hearing "A Word". Rom. 10:17. The only source of true faith is a Word from God. Faith comes, or is created or imparted by the hearing of a Word from God.

The Word can come to us in many ways:

a) The Word through Creation. See Ps. 19:1-6; Rom. 1:20. In other words the Lord can speak to us through His creation.

b) The Spoken Prophetic Word. See 2 Pet. 1:20-21; 2 Chron. 20:14-17.

Also the "Gift of Prophecy", as it operates in the church. 1 Cor. 14:3. c) The Written, Inspired, Infallible Word. See 2 Tim. 3:15-16; Ps. 119:

105. God speaks to us from His Word. d) The Living Incarnate Word. See Jn. 1:1-3,14; Heb. 12:1-3; 2 Cor. 3:2.

We too are the "Word made Flesh!" e) The Quickened Preached Word. See Rom. 10:17; Acts 2:36-42;

Acts 14:8-10. Note! - In Hebrews 11, the roll call of faith heroes, how they received "A Word" from the Lord, which enabled them to do what they did.

3.3 FAITH IS "BORN" IN THE HEART.

a) Faith born in our heart by the Holy Spirit. There is an interesting comparison in 1 John 5 between verse 18, which speaks of "whosoever" is born of God, and this of course is the result of the Lord's challenge in Jn. 3:3 and 5.

Then in 1 Jn. 5:4 it speaks of "whatsoever" is born of God in our

hearts. This is the source of a true overcoming faith.

b) Faith in God - verses - the Faith of God. By this we mean that it

comes as a Divine Impartation to our hearts by the Holy Spirit. See Rom. 3:22; Gal. 2:16; 2:20; Eph. 3:12; Hab. 2:4. Only the King James version will bring out the real meaning here.

In Gal. 2:16 for instance it says, - "justified by the Faith of Jesus

Christ, not in Jesus Christ. I believe in Jesus, then something is imparted by the Holy Spirit, and I am justified by the Faith of Jesus Christ. See diagram 1 and 2.

Note! - the above must not be confused with "the Gift of Faith" -

which is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit.

4. THE NATURE OF FAITH.

Faith has three characteristics, or can we say, three expressions. These flow on one from another, and yet each has a characteristic of its own.

4.1 A TRUSTING FAITH. ( Loyal and Resting.)

There are times and situations where we just need to rest in the Lord, refusing to worry or become anxious or upset. Instead we rest in faith on God's promises. Ps. 37:3-7; Dan. 6:10; 3:16-18.

Most of our Christian life we live by a Trusting in, or Relying on, or Resting in, kind of faith. Acts 12:1-11.

4.2 A PERSISTENT FAITH. ( Determination.)

This is a kind of faith that knows God's promises and stands upon them....until.... the answer comes. This kind of faith persists, it asks and keeps on asking, it knocks and keeps on knocking,.....etc. Luke 11:5-9; 18:1-8; Acts 12:1-16.

4.3 A MIRACLE FAITH. ( Courage.)

This is the kind of faith that comes as a result of receiving a specific promise, a Rhema Word, from the Lord. It is a faith brought about by the quickening of a specific promise. Rom. 10:17. This kind of faith rises to the challenge and takes a step of faith, claiming the victory and many times results in a real spirit of praise before the answer actually becomes visible. Mat. 14:25-33; Mk. 4:35-41 See diagram 3.

4.4 AN EXAMPLE OF A MIRACLE FAITH.

There are times in our Christian life where the Lord throws out a real challenge to us, such as Peter experienced in Matthew 14. In these situations it would disappoint the Lord if we continued in a "Resting" or even a "Persistent" faith. It calls for action. Here, faith comes because of a Divine Revelation, and can be classed as the Faith of God, rather than Faith in God.

Tucked away in 2 Chron. 20 is an example, in it we see the principle for a miracle faith. If we apply this to our situation, it will see us through every difficulty, and make us more than conquerors in every situation in Christ.

Using the following outline, let us make a study of 2 Chronicles 20.

The situation ~ Verses 1-2 ~ Emergency arises

,, 3-5 ~ Turned to the Lord.

,, 6-8 ~ Prayed to the Lord.

,, 9 ~ Quoted the Logos from chap. 6:28-30.

,, 12-13 ~ Stood still until ..............

Five Steps from Despair to Victory.

5. THE TESTING OF OUR FAITH.

As gold is purified when it goes through the fire, so our faith will also be tested for its genuineness. 1 Pet. 1:7 and Ps. 12:6. If there has not been a great test in the area of persistence when we first call upon the Lord, then there will be a test after we receive a Word. This is the Law of Faith. Rom. 3:27. See diagram 3. 5.1 THE LAW OF FAITH. The Law of Faith consists of the following steps: a) Word given ~ Faith is Imparted b) Word obeyed ~ Faith in action c) Crisis ~ Apparent contradiction d) Word supplies ~ Faith's victory. Let us look at the following examples: # Peter on the Sea. ~ Matthew 14:22-33 # Disciples in the Boat. ~ Mark 4:35-41 # Naaman the Leper. ~ 2 Kings 5:1-14 # Moses before Pharaoh. ~ Exodus 5:20-23 # The Blind man. ~ John 9:6-7

Word Given Word Obeyed We question the Word in our Crisis!

Test – Crisis We must Stand on the Word Word Supplies Given in our Crisis.

5.2 THE ENEMIES OF OUR FAITH.

a) Reasoning. The greatest war takes place in the realm of the mind. 2 Cor. 10:4-5. It is here where the battle rages between natural truth and Spiritual truth.

The renewed mind releases the Power of God. Rom. 12:1-2; Phil. 2:12-13; Eph. 4:17-24.

The carnal, that is, the natural reasoning mind, is the enemy of God,

and destroys faith. Rom. 8:7.

The intensity with which the Word comes at the beginning

is directly related to the Severity Of the Crisis

Thoughts are Seeds, they will ultimately produce life or death. Jas. 1:13-15.

b) Confession. The next enemy is, or can be, the very words we speak! The words we speak can release the power of God, or they can bring destruction into our life. Prov. 18:21; 12:13; 13:3.

The tongue that speaks God's Word, becomes a channel for the power of God. Rom. 10:9-10.

The tongue that speaks contrary to God's Word, becomes a destructive force. Jas. 3:1-12; 1:6-8.

6. Conclusion:

There is a Japanese Bonsai tree, which is only centimeters high, when it is fully-grown and complete. There is an American Sequoia tree, which is 83 meters high, with a 24-meter circumference, when it is fully-grown and complete. The seeds from which both of these trees are grown, are exactly the same size and both weighs less than 1/50th of a gram. Within each seed there is the potential of life and growth - one so small - the other so large. There is a saying: "Any fool can count the number of seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in a seed. There is an incredible potential within every Christian. God has planted a seed within those who are born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which lives and abides forever. 1 Pet. 1:23

Within YOU there is a seed of Life! May I draw your attention again to Heb. 11:6 - "without faith it is impossible to please the Lord!" Let us therefore rise to the challenge, that it may be said of us, as it is of Abraham, - "Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God." Heb. 11:16.
