From Our Pastor’s Desk:
Grace and peace beloved of Christ!
Summer lingers in warm days even though the
nights are beginning to cool, have you noticed? In the
community signs of fall are showing themselves as
we gather school supplies for children, the Fall
Festival at IUMC is nearly here, and planning for the
winter months ahead all come into focus. Who is
canning garden tomatoes for winter chili, delicious
soups, and tomato sauce?!
I wanted to let you know how very pleased I am with
the frank and loving feedback you have shared with
me on the summer sermon series: Images of God.
It is in the dialogue we learn about one another and
how we all hold the Lord in our hearts so dearly –
even with so many different ways of relating to God.
But this notion then begs another question; once we
have pondered the many ways of imagining God,
how do we hear what God lays upon our hearts and
minds?
The Sermon Series for September is entitled:
Hearing God
How do we hear the Lord’s good messages,
intentions, and calls to us as a congregation and
individuals, to continually discern God’s purpose for
our lives, for God said: I know the plans I have for
you, plans that you should prosper and have
peace….Jer. 29:11.
What if we faithfully come together to be intentional
about how God speaks to us, through the variety of
Divine and sacred images of God we have been
talking about all summer? And, discover even more
images through scripture?
One of the things I have heard is that we might enjoy
to gather for a bit of UMC history! I propose a four-
week class, in the evening, that will offer insight to
our faith history as a denomination ( I promise to
bring my 9012 Book of Discipline, too!) to find roots
that will affirm and wings to grow. I am seeking an
evening date and will consult you, and the calendar
for meetings. I am hoping we can combine with
together for IUMC and EBUMC for this class.
Also, thank you for the wonderful mornings on the
porch this summer, let’s talk about how to keep bible
study and faith journeying, together, alive. Staying
close to scripture and prayer is a spiritual discipline
that keeps us close to Christ and is a most loving way
to get to know one another, too. Praise be to God!
And, at EBUMC, Christine is prayerfully at work on
making Sept 15th, Rally Day, a day for all ages to
recommit to the joys of intentional Christian
education. This is for the children and youth, of
course, but all ages of adults, too. There will be
super fun surprises and I hope to see everyone
there! Together we worship, pray, love and grow!
“I know the plans I have for you, says the
Lord….plans that you should prosper, plans for hope
and peace…” Jeremiah 29:11 speaks of God’s vision
for all living things and specifically, for and to
humanity. I pray that together we can be in great
listening, learning, prayer, and discernment to catch
the spiritual vision for God’s love and purpose among
us. Praise be to God!
With grace and peace, Rev. Dr. Robin Blair

Sermon Series for September:
How do we hear God speaking to us? Sept. 8 Message: Quick to Listen (Holy Communion Sunday) Scripture: James 1:1-12 Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 When God tries to “speak” to us, how might we hear? And then, as James says, be “doers of the Word”? ---------------------- Sept. 15 Message: Mistakes will be made (as we try to hear the Spirit’s guidance) Scripture: James 2:1-10, Mark 8:27-38 When we attempt to love as Jesus tells us we ought, we fall short. How to live with that failure, if we follow the commandments of Christ? ---------------------- Sept. 22 Message: Trees by the Water (how are we fed by the Spirit’s love?) Scripture: Psalm 1 The love of God is always there; how is it we find ourselves unable to be fed by it? --------------------- Sept. 29 Message: For Such a Time as This (when we take action as we have heard) Scripture: Esther 7:1-6, 9-10, 20-22 Mark 9:38-41 There comes a time we must act on that which God has placed on our hearts. We stand alone or with others who see the need, and we speak, act, or move toward justice with love.
