Ms. Denney

Hello all! My name is Sophia Denney, and I'm theoldest of three children from a mid-size city inSouthwest Missouri called Springfield. This is mysecond year teaching Middle School English here atSPSA. As you may know, the Holy Spirit brought me toTX through a program called ACE (the Alliance forCatholic Education). I am blessed to live with sixother ACE teachers who work in Catholic schoolsacross the Diocese. I am wrapping up my second yearof the program and will soon receive my Masters'degree from the University of Notre Dame this May.Prior to Notre Dame, I attended Vanderbilt Universityin Nashville, TN. My undergraduate degree was inChild Studies and English (Creative Writing) with aminor in Reading, Literacy, and Education Studies.

When I was younger, I always thought I wanted to bean artist, but as I grew older, I realized that I lovedcreating with words most of all. I fell in love with creative writing through trying my hand at writing anovel when I was in 8th grade (it was about an alien doing a research project on human kids!). Now, Ilike to write short fiction and poetry--but more than anything, I love to read. I read every night beforebed, bouncing between spiritual reading, literary fiction, and middle grade novels.

Teaching is the perfect way to share my love of reading, writing, and our Lord with others. I'm sograteful that God included teaching at SPSA in his plan for me!

¡Hola a todos! Mi nombre es Sophia Denney y soy la mayor de tres hijos de una ciudad mediana enel suroeste de Missouri llamada Springfield. Este es mi segundo año enseñando inglés en la escuelasecundaria aquí en SPSA. Como sabrá, el Espíritu Santo me trajo a TX a través de un programallamado ACE (la Alianza para la Educación Católica). Tengo la suerte de vivir con otros seismaestros ACE que trabajan en escuelas católicas en toda la Diócesis. Cuando era más joven, siempre pensé que quería ser artista, pero a medida que crecía, me di cuentade que, sobre todo, me encantaba crear con palabras. Me enamoré de la escritura creativa al intentarescribir una novela cuando estaba en octavo grado (¡se trataba de un extraterrestre haciendo unproyecto de investigación sobre niños humanos!). Ahora, me gusta escribir ficción corta y poesía,pero más que nada, me encanta leer. Leo todas las noches antes de acostarme, alternando entre lalectura espiritual, la ficción literaria y las novelas de grado medio.

Hello. I am Sister Georgiann Wildhaber, SSND. As a member ofthe School Sisters of Notre Dame, ministering in a school settingis an integral part of who I am. I came to Dallas in 2014 as anewly retired educator. For 44 years I was in elementary &secondary education in the St. Louis Missouri Archdiocese as ateacher and administrator. Following that form of ministry in 2005I was appointed administrator of our retreat & retirement center atSt. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa, MS. And in 2014 I moved toDallas in retirement/volunteer work in a school and parish setting.

So, I find myself as a volunteer/resource person here at St. PhilipSt. Augustine Academy for the last 4 ½ years. The faculty, staffand students bring so much goodness and life to me. All are puregifts!! My life is so much fuller because of the SPSA community.

When I was much younger I enjoyed fishing, hunting, softball,racquetball & meals with family and friends. Today I still lookforward to meals with Sisters, family & friends. But now I spendtime doing puzzles, cooking and backyard gardening. This is theresult of my aging and the pandemic.

God willing I can continue to be a part of the SPSA school community for years to come.

Hola. Soy la hermana Georgiann Wildhaber, SSND. Como miembro de School Sisters of NotreDame, ministrar en un entorno escolar es una parte integral de lo que soy. Vine a Dallas en 2014como educador recién jubilado. Durante 44 años estuve en educación primaria y secundaria en laArquidiócesis de St. Louis Missouri como maestra y administradora. Siguiendo esa forma deministerio en 2005, fui nombrado administrador de nuestro centro de retiro y retiro en St. Mary of thePines en Chatawa, MS. Y en 2014 me mudé a Dallas como jubilado / trabajo voluntario en unentorno escolar y parroquial.

Entonces, me encuentro como voluntario / persona de recursos aquí en St. Philip St. AugustineAcademy durante los últimos 4 años y medio. La facultad, el personal y los estudiantes me traentanta bondad y vida. ¡¡Todos son puro regalo !! Mi vida es mucho más llena gracias a la comunidadde SPSA.

Cuando era mucho más joven disfrutaba de la pesca, la caza, el softbol, el racquetball y las comidascon mi familia y amigos. Hoy todavía espero con ansias las comidas con las Hermanas, la familia ylos amigos. Pero ahora paso tiempo haciendo rompecabezas, cocinando y haciendo jardinería en elpatio trasero. Este es el resultado de mi envejecimiento y la pandemia.

Spotlight on the Book FairEnfoque en Feria del Libro

The SPSA Book Fair was held March 8 - 12 in the Library. At the end of the week, we totaled over $7000.00in sales and sold more than 900 books! We held a contest for the class that purchased the most books andare proud to announce that 2B is the winner. The prize is a pizza party and Free Dress Day scheduled fornext week. Thank you for another successful Book Fair.

March Math Madness - How You Can Help Your Student at HomeMiddle SchoolMarch Math Madness: cómo puede ayudar a su estudiante en casaGrados Medias

For our middle schoolers, the most important math facts to practice are multiplication facts, integers, andreciprocals. Daily practice is essential for students' learning. Here are some ideas for practicing these mathfacts at home.

Multiplication Facts: Use flashcards to quiz the student or create your own flashcards using indexcards. Use Quizlet to create digital flashcards, or find free multiplication cards with a quick Googlesearch. Play War with a deck of cards (when each player plays down a card, the first to shout out theanswer to that multiplication fact wins the two cards). Try playing Rock, Paper, Scissors, too, whereeach participant states a number (between 1-12) simultaneously. The first to shout out the answer forthose two numbers multiplied together wins.

Integers: Point out to students real-world applications of negative numbers. Talk about being aboveor below sea level, for example, or let students sit beside their parents when planning a budget orpaying bills. Allow students to help you plan out a grocery trip with a certain budget, always doing themath by hand to figure out how much they can spend on certain items.

Reciprocals: Help students understand how to solve simple math equations like 8 times whatnumber is 1? Answer= 1/8. If you have 1 lasagna and need to feed 8 people, you can figure out that

each person will get 1/8th of the lasagna. Get students to practice solving this each time there issome amount of food to be divided among family members.

For ALL Math Facts, please encourage students to log onto IXL and find the "Recommended Skills"under Math, and practice any of the skills filled in with a yellow star.
