Activity ReportIn recent weeks, large piles of tree branches were visible at several neighborhood locations, due to aggressive, overdue trimming. This Live Oak had some low-hanging branches removed (and piled next to it). Even more important to its future health and growth was trimming back branches of the larger Ash tree to the left, which was starting to force the Live Oak to develop into a one-sided tree.

Fairways of Sherrill Park That Ash tree and the one next to it were relieved of large amounts of dead wood and branches that

overlapped or hung into the alley and neighbors’ yards. The pile shown here eventually tripled in size –

… before it was deposited at the street for pickup over the course of several weeks.

Fairways of Sherrill ParkThis Homeowner’s towering Live Oaks demonstrate how large trees planted too close together may be kept trimmed to grow in relative harmony, interlacing only at the very tops of their canopies.

In contrast, this tall Ash on the neighboring HOA Common Area (see photos below) had major limbs oppressing one of those Live Oaks and other branches pressing on a Red Oak in front of the same house, as well as a large limb positioned above the roof. These photo shows those limbs have been removed. This Ash developed four trunks a few feet above the ground, around a central cavity where water collects, wood rots and pests thrive. Early trimming of the young tree would have prevented this. This stump at the back of the house marks where another large Ash grew, before it fell over on that same neighbor’s fence a few years ago. The maintenance program begun last year is designed to avoid further incidents – reducing risk and expense while improving the health and extending the life of these trees.

At this point, we are largely caught up on tree trimming, and much less effort will be required in future years to keep our neighborhood trees healthy and strong (if we continue to conduct appropriate maintenance). Our many new trees must be checked each autumn and trimmed as necessary.

Fairways of Sherrill ParkThis large Red Oak behind the wrought iron fence at the corner of Wyndham and Whitney had many low-hanging branches obstructing the sidewalk, as this photo shows (also shown in the following photo from last month’s report).

Fairways of Sherrill ParkWhile the tall neighboring tree will remain lopsided, the corner Oak no longer presses against it and both trees receive much more sunlight. To open up their canopies and create space between them, dead and oppressive branches were similarly cleared out of the other eight Red Oaks at the main (Wyndham) entrance …

This Live Oak behind the east entrance monument shows a more advanced state of oppression. Although one-sided and leaning, it has reached up more than the others to compete for sunlight. To allow it more room to grow, major limbs have been removed from the huge Red Oak towering over this Live Oak from behind the wrought iron fence (the largest at the entrance and perhaps in the neighborhood).

Fairways of Sherrill ParkThe Live Oak across Wyndham on the east side of the main entrance was becoming similarly stunted; perhaps maintaining these trees will help it to grow.

Fairways of Sherrill ParkOther obstacles to growth include crossing roots, constricting border walls, and the original wire basket, which should have been removed when it was planted. An arborist could air-spade the roots to remove these wires and allow the tree to grow better.

The HOA Board must decide whether to undertake the expense of this additional maintenance or remove the challenged Live Oaks in favor of alternate landscaping.

(Some further trimming of the Red Oaks is awaiting this decision – we don’t want to remove good foliage to help the Live Oaks if we won’t keep them.)

Fairways of Sherrill ParkThe flower bed at “Playground Corner” (Waterford and Wyndmere) has really taken off. The most prominent are the Lantana in the front and the Indian Feather and the Lemon Grass in the background. A few replacements were just planted for those plants that did not make it.

In order to conserve water, we water with buckets between thunderstorms, rather than using the large irrigation system to wet this one small corner.

Fairways of Sherrill ParkThe flood lights illuminating the entrance monuments at night have been raised to compensate for the taller (more full) “fall color” planting. (Some further pruning may be necessary to fully illuminate the monuments.)

The Crepe Myrtle next to the flagpole is kept trimmed to allow the spotlight to illuminate the flag at night.
