“It’s good, quality family entertainment,” Pelham said.Fairgoers are well-familiar with Rosaire’s Royal Racing Pigs, who are

returning for their 24th season.Several times daily, the pigs “race”through a short course to delight ofthe crowds that flock to each performance.

“He sounds his horn and startstalking and everyone runs over,”Pelham said.

Also returning is the comedic ven-triloquist Sylvia Fletcher and her

It’s been two years since our last Farm-City Day; an event highlighting the impor-tance of agriculture in Steuben County. We are pleased and excited to announce thatwe will be returning to Canisteo, to the Moss-VanWie Dairy Farm. Cliff & Deb Mosshosted the event just a few years ago in 2011. Look for many of your favorite dis-plays & vendors (maple, ice cream, dairy princess, milking a cow by hand) alongwith new attractions and exhibits!

Centrally located on State Route 36, Moss-VanWie Dairy is home to 120 cows and100 calves and heifers. They have over 300 acres of corn, 120 acres of soybeans and80 acres of hay.

Farm-City Day is an educational, fun filled day on the farm where the public canget a first-hand, behind the scenes look at how a modern dairy farm operates. Comeout and celebrate our local agriculture community at the annual Steuben CountyFarm-City Day Saturday, September 26. When Jo Ann Brundagewas teaching her son, John, about canning and preserv-ing, she couldn’t have knownhe would grow up to be amongher top competitive rivals atthe Steuben County Fair.

“It started last year,” JohnBrundage said. “(I said) ‘we’regoing to compete, and I’mgoing to kick your butt inspaghetti sauce.’”

It didn’t quite turn out thatway. John’s sauce finishedsecond or third behind JoAnn’s first-place entry.

It’s still a sore subject.

New this year is the FarmFollies, an animated educa-tional display for kids thatpromotes good nutrition.

“There’s a signing corncob, fruits and vegetables,”Pelham said.

All of those shows areamong the fair’s free dailyattractions, which – ofcourse – include demon-strations, exhibits andjudging in more than 100classes. Entries were stillcoming in as the Aug. 7deadline approached, andmany categories alreadyhad several entries.

“Exhibits are going to be

up this year. The open classis doing very well,” Pelhamsaid.

Of course, no fair wouldbe complete without carni-val rides and games, con-certs, food-eating contests, tractor pulls, horse racingand a demolition derby. Allare on this year’s fairschedule.

For a complete list of

events and daily admissionspecials, see page 12.

Longtime fairgoerPelham, who says he “grewup on the fairgrounds”,already knows what hewants to see.

“The fried bread dough –I have one a night,” he said.“The animals, the antiquetractor displays, that typeof stuff.”

Jo Ann has been competingat the fair each year for morethan 40 years.

She’s a member of the fair’sgoverning board – as is

John now.“It’s a family affair,”

she said.John’s involvement with

the fair started at a young age.

“When I was younger, I soldtickets and whatever I could

do,” he said. The mother-son rivalry is

helping to keep alive thecanned goods competition atthe fair, which Jo AnnBrundage said has sloweddown in recent years, largelybecause fewer people know

how to do it.Other categories have seen

the opposite trend.“The photography has real-

ly taken off,” she said, and“last year they had so many inthe baked goods (competition)they hardly had enough room

for them all.”For those who might be

interested in competing in thefuture, there’s a wealth of cat-egories to take part in, fromvarious canned, preserveditems to photography andother art to vegetables andhoney.

Jo Ann Brundage said thefair brings is “very well-quali-fied” judges, who do blindtests of the items – they can’ttell who entered what untilafter it’s scored.

That’s probably just aswell, as Jo Ann is well-knownby most at this point – thoughson John is on his way.

“His dill pickles, I have toadmit they’re pretty darngood,” Jo Ann said. She notedshe hasn’t entered any of herown this year.

“She can’t compete withme,” John quips.

John’s an accountant witha firm that handles FingerLakes vacation properties.

He seems to be doing wellfor himself – but he stillgrows and cans much of hisown food, an activity manynow associate with aDepression-era, “save every-thing” mentality.

“I’ve been gardening mywhole life,” John said. “It’s afun hobby.”

He doesn’t eat fresh toma-toes, but he cans his owntomato sauce.

“I don’t think I’ve hardlyever had a jar of Raguspaghetti sauce,” he said.

John grudgingly admits heisn’t quite ready to go head-to-head against his mom’sspaghetti sauce … yet.

But how many people havethe courage to even try tocompete against their ownmother’s spaghetti sauce?

their produce.Buying local food fos-

ters community growthFamily farms are part of

the American tradition of self-

sufficiency and serve as thebasis of local communities.

Local farmers markets andCSA farms provide places forcommunity members to meet, socialize, and discuss issues.

Local farmers markets andfarms bring together individ-uals who share concernsabout the future, promotingorganization and cooperationtoward common goals.

By helping family farmsfinancially, you sustain yourfamily and community withdelicious, healthy local foods.

Buying local lets youconnect with your food

producer concerning thesafety and nutrition ofyour foods

Locally-grown foods can behigh in nutrients, often reach-ing you within 24 hours ofharvest, whereas produceshipped from out of state maybe up to a week old and hasoften suffered from severenutrient loss.

When you buy locally, youcan ask whether the farmersuse safe farming practices, what they spray on theircrops, and what they feed totheir animals.

Buying local preservesthe natural environment

By supporting local agri-culture, you help to protectyour region's farmland fromurban sprawl and develop-ment.

Protection of local farm-land means protection of openspaces, natural ecosystems, and biodiversity.

Buying local food helps toreduce dependence on foreignoil needed to ship food thou-sands of miles, thus cuttingback on greenhouse gasemissions.

Steuben County is home to nearly 1,650 family-owned and operated farms, and more agricul-tural acreage than any other county in New

York. Farmers’ Markets provide opportunities formany of these farmers to sell their products directly toconsumers. Purchasing food that has been grown andharvested locally has several benefits, in addition toproviding consumers high quality, fresh food – itstrengthens the regional economy, preserves the natu-ral environment, fosters community growth, and letsconsumers connect directly with local producers.
