Fairlington has a new church logo! Designed by church member Lindsey Smith, it was recently approved by our church council. A logo allows for us to consistently “brand” our unique message in all our communications such as the SteepleTalk newsletter, the bulletin, our website, social media, etc. It does not replace the cross and flame logo, which will still be used in public situations to represent the United Methodist denomination. A huge thank you goes to Lindsey for taking this project from idea to reality. She read scripture, prayed, talked to leaders, and gave much thought to how our logo could reflect our vision and mission. Lindsey describes what was behind her design: I thought of ways to communicate the three tiers (welcome, nurture, service) in a straight-forward, clear visual message. What do all three have in common? The personal touch and the connection with others. So, what better visual than hands? In the logo you will see hands upholding the cross. This symbolizes hands upholding God’s word, embracing God’s children, and serving others. Since we are an accepting, whole church congregation, mindful of everyone, the logo is embodied in the shape of a circle. The circle represents the whole body of the church, Christ-centered in the middle. The shape is also vibrantly colored, also representing our community. Watch for the logo! It will be showing up in all kinds of places. ~Pastor Mary Beth [email protected] In April, we’ll explore the role of food in our lives, paying attention to spiritual and physical hunger, and celebrate fellowship around the table. Welcome Neighbors! On Palm Sunday, March 25, FUMC opened the playground to over 600 friends and neighbors for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Church volunteers filled and hid over 1,000 eggs, prepped the playground, and provided balloons, face painting and refreshments. Bottom Photo: FUMC recently welcomed The Men’s Choir of Woodlawn-Faith UMC, who traded places with our choir and sang to the glory of God.

Unlike many churches, Fairlington’s buildings do not sit empty from one Sunday to the next. The first Preschool teachers start arriving each weekday at 7:45am and the last members of the community or congregation depart most nights after 9:00pm. It takes the efforts of many volunteers to keep our old building running smoothly and safely and we are grateful for all who help us.

One focus of the trustees is making Fairlington UMC more welcoming, both visually and by providing a safer, healthier space. To that end, 2017 saw extensive cleaning, repainting, and decluttering, remodeling of bathrooms on the second and third floors of the Education Wing through the generosity of the Preschool, major repairs to the narthex doors, new lighting and upgrades to elements of the electrical system.

In 2017, our HVAC systems, which are long past their expected useful lives, were kept operating through the dedicated work of a handful of trustees and other volunteers who made dozens of smaller repairs and supervised more than a half dozen service or repair calls.

Two projects begun in 2017 have been completed – renovation of the Family Room behind the balcony and installation of a FUMM storage shed in the backyard, which will allow us to remove from the building materials and supplies that do not need to be kept inside.

For 2018, the trustees have adopted priorities aligned with our NLI efforts and our building renovation plans. Their emphasis on welcoming will continue with visible improvements to the buildings and grounds. They will support our missions work through improvements to spaces used for those purposes. The trustees will focus on investing wisely in parts of our building and grounds least likely to be significantly renovated.

Our church has approximately 25 young people attending colleges throughout the US and abroad. At finals time we send them "care packages" to let them know that their church family supports them and thinks about them while they are away. We would appreciate your donations of individually wrapped goodies - candy, popcorn, gum, granola bars, fruit snacks, and crackers. Please bring your contributions and put them in the library marked "Campus Connections - Beth Baker" and we will make sure to include them. We will be meeting after church on April 8th to assemble the packages and send them on their way. Monetary contributions are also welcome to cover the cost of the boxes and mailing. Just write “campus connections” on your check. Thanks in advance for your support ~Beth Baker, (703)425-9535 or [email protected].

Interested in knowing more about how our church can grow in generosity and how stewardship works year-round? Join the stewardship and finance committees for this training event led by Rev. Scott McKenzie, from Horizons Stewardship, on Monday, April 23, 6:30-8:30pm in the fellowship hall. Rev. McKenzie, our capital campaign consultant, is also the author of several books (Bounty: Ten Ways To Increase Giving , Generosity Rising: Lead a Stewardship Revolution in Your Church; CLIMB Your Church; Higher: Reaching New Heights in Giving and Discipleship). Everyone is welcome!

On Good Friday we women watched as Jesus was crucified, observed his burial preparations and witnessed his body being placed in the tomb. Then on Easter morning, we awoke to find an empty tomb and were the first to spread the joyous news of Jesus’ resurrection. Ever since, we have gone forth and shared the good news of hope because we are Easter people! ~Karlene Masters [email protected]

The Missions Committee of Fairlington United Methodist Church, in conjunction with Fairlington United Methodist Men award financial assistance to members of the FUMC congregation who seek to contribute their personal efforts and devotion to God's work in the world and who feel called to serve in short-term mission, domestically or abroad. If you plan to go on a mission trip, whether or not it is associated with our church, and you are looking for financial assistance, you are invited to apply for financial support through our committee.

If needed, financial support may provide up to the full cost of domestic trips (appropriate cost of transportation, lodging, and project fees for supplies and materials) and up to half the cost of international trips subject to the availability of funds. Applications must be received no later than 90 days before the mission trip commences and are approved subject to the availability of funds by the Missions Financial Support Committee. If you want more information about mission trip financial support, or if you want to apply for financial support, please contact Wray Sexson at (703) 242-2352, [email protected]. Saturday, April 28 is National Rebuilding Day which Fairlington is participating in, like we have for many years. This time we have been assigned a house - a condo actually - and have several household repair tasks we will rally around during April culminating in a large group effort to complete the tasks on April 29. We’d like to gauge people’s interest in helping out this year. The tasks range from painting, to installing door stops, and fitting closet doors. Nothing too hard. We will probably have a day prior to the 28

th for priming the walls as they

are painted with some strong colors that will need a couple of coats to cover up. Please contact Kent Smiley at [email protected] (703) 971

Our congregation’s discernment continues on how to shape a church building that is welcoming, nurturing, and of service to our community. As announced in February, the Building Committee began working with the Reverend Scott McKenzie of Horizons Stewardship to better understand the giving capacity of our congregation toward a renovation project that supports the FUMC mission. Scott will use his 20-plus years of experience as a stewardship consultant to help us balance our vision for the future with our resources. Scott will be meeting with members of our congregation in mid-April to deepen his knowledge of our priorities and help us continue to be good stewards during and beyond the renovation project. The building committee will share next steps and, as always, encourages feedback throughout our journey together. If you are interested in joining a team focused on fundraising and giving, spirituality and prayer, communications or project management, contact Daphne Miller at [email protected].

In order to safely house their residents while a new shelter is being built, we are helping Carpenter’s Shelter with a temporary living space at Macy’s (Landmark Mall). We are in need of 4-6 volunteers to help disassemble shelving units. Email

ALIVE! Walkathon Sunday, May 6 at Noon at First Christian Church in Alexandria. The proceeds go toward a tuition assistance program which helps bridge the gap between what our low income families can pay and what it costs us to provide a quality education for their students. Continued uncertainty in government funding makes the success of this year's Walkathon more important than ever. For further information go to https://www.alive-inc.org/walkathon2017.shtml
