At the faceoff ‘X’, Joe DeLasho went 4-for-9 while Will Fox added a 3-for-6 performance. The action in the midfield was also aided by Samuel Murphy, who gathered three ground balls to go along with a caused turnover for the sophomore. 2017 Game Notes 2 Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse

Ninth Season • Bucknell ’032015 CAA Coach of the Year

The 2017 season is Andy Copelan’s ninth at the helm of the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team. He has posted a 74-51 (.592) record with the Stags and owns a 10-year NCAA Division I head coaching record of 92-66 (.582).

Copelan was named the team’s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Including this spring’s preseason rankings, Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan’s nine years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-ranked foe in seven of his campaigns with the Stags.

Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game. Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2015. In two seasons with the CAA, the Stags have collected 14 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox ’18 and 2016 Rookie and co-Player of the Year nods for Colin Burke ’19.

Fairfield student-athletes also continued to gain the national and regional spotlight in 2016. Burke and TJ Neubauer ’16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season. Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. He was the 10th Stag during Copelan’s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks.

Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from 2011-14, including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan’s 2013 club recorded the Stags’ first-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team with a triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield.

Signs of the Stags’ return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program’s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in 2006. Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure.

Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan’s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the MAAC Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program’s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth. After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from 2006-08, rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan’s three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four. With Copelan as recruiting coordinator, Inside Lacrosse ranked the Terps’ 2007 incoming class as the second best in the nation, and the 2008 class was tabbed as the third-best in the country.

Game 4 3 Fairfield at UMass Lowell

The Matchup: Fairfield vs. UMass LowellScouting UMass Lowell

The UMass Lowell River Hawks are 1-2 following their first win of the spring, an 18-13 home triumph over Siena this past Saturday. The River Hawks will be wrapping up a season-opening, four-game homestand against the Stags, having previously lost to in-state foes Boston University (18-8) and Harvard (14-9) on Cushing Field in 2017.

The UMass Lowell attack is led by seven goals from Jon Phillips and five markers fired home by Austin Lane. Sean Tyrrell is the team’s top facilitator with nine assists along with four goals of his own to round out a team-leading 13 points through three games this spring.

Grant Lardieri returns as the River Hawks’ starting goalkeeper in 2017 and has played 143:50 of 180 possible minutes in the cage thus far. He owns a 15.02 goals-against average and a .520 save percentage (36 goals allowed, 39 saves).

Brett Dattilo has taken the majority of the faceoffs en route to a 38-of-78 (.487) showing with 16 ground balls. Will Puduski is 4-of-10 on the draw to round out UMass Lowell’s performance at the ‘X’.

March 1, 2016: Fairfield 12, UMass Lowell 10Six different Stags found the back of the net in a 12-10 victory over UMass Lowell

on March 1, 2016 on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Jake Knostman and Drew Murray each registered a hat trick for the Stags.

The victory saw Fairfield respond to an 8-7 deficit in the third period with a five-goal run to reclaim the lead for good. The Stags kept the River Hawks off the board for 14:28 of clock time, opening up a 12-8 edge before the visitors scratched out a pair of late markers to round out the final tally at 12-10.

Fairfield was also led offensively by a player that didn’t rattle the cage as senior co-captain Charlie Schnider facilitated the Fairfield attack with a career-high five assists.

Helping to keep the offense on the field was Will Fox, who had a career day at the faceoff ‘X’. Fox won a personal-best 20-of-25 draws and collected nine ground balls. J.B. Smith was also integral to the faceoff and defensive success of the Stags with a career-high six ground balls.

UMass Lowell was led by four goals from Sam Klingsporn and a five-point showing (3g, 2a) by Sean Tyrrell. Grant Lardieri made nine saves for the River Hawks.

2017 Game Notes 4 Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse

Fairfield vs. Ranked OpponentsFairfield has defeated at least one ranked opponent (in

the USILA Coaches’ Poll) in seven of Andy Copelan’s nine seasons at the helm of the Stags - including a win at then-No. 1 Denver during the 2013 season. The Stags have four wins over top-10 programs during the Andy Copelan era.

Based upon the current edition of the poll, Saturday’s game at No. 18 Stony Brook is the next of four upcoming opportunities for the Stags to knock off a ranked opponent this spring. Two of Fairfield’s prior opponents this spring - Richmond and Bucknell - were both unranked but receiving votes at the time of their meetings with the Stags, while Rutgers was slotted at No. 14 by the USILA for its visit to Rafferty Stadium.

Lucky 13Fairfield’s 13 goals scored at Bucknell on Feb. 18 matched

the Stags’ 2016 season high attained in the wins over Georgetown and Quinnipiac.

The last time Fairfield scored more than 13 goals was a 15-4 home win over Manhattan on Feb. 21, 2015 – the Stags’ first-ever win on the newly constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.

Sharing the ScoringPrior to the win at Bucknell, the last time at least 12

Stags scored in a game was on April 3, 2010, when 13 different players notched at least one point in a 13-4 win at Bellarmine. John Snellman and Sam Snow led the attack in that ECAC Lacrosse League road win with three points apiece.

Colin Burke: CAA Preseason Player of the YearColin Burke opened 2017 as an Inside Lacrosse

Preseason All-America Third Team selection and the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. These honors came on the heels of a freshman campaign in which he was a USILA All-America Honorable Mention, CAA co-Player of the Year, CAA Rookie of the Year and a Second Team All-New England pick. In addition, Inside Lacrosse ranked him as the No. 2 freshman in the nation following last season.

Burke currently leads the Stags in all three scoring categories with five goals, three assists (sharing the team high with Dylan Beckwith) and eight total points.

Consistency Is KeyColin Burke enters Tuesday with a 20-game point streak,

which encompasses every outing of his career to date. Currently, 25 Division I players own an active point streak of at least 20 consecutive contests. The national list is headlined by Ian MacKay of Vermont at 46 straight games, though he is currently injured and has not suited up for the Catamounts this spring.

Of those 25 student-athletes, Burke is one of seven whose 20-game scoring streak spans his entire collegiate career. Michael LeClair of High Point leads that list with a point in all 45 games of his tenure with the Panthers.

KEEPING UP WITH THE COMPETITION

The Stags’ 2017 opponents are off to a combined 26-22 in the early stages of the season. Five of Fairfield’s 2017 foes appear in the most recent USILA Coaches’ Poll in addition to Hofstra, which is unranked but receiving votes on the USILA ledger. See below for this week’s rankings from three major national outlets.

Immediate ImpactsThe newcomers to the Stags’ roster this spring will look to

continue a recent trend. Colin Burke was the third straight Fairfield player to collect Rookie of the Year laurels at the conference level, adding the honor to his CAA co-Player of the Year nod. Previously, Will Fox was named the 2015 CAA Rookie of the Year and Dave Fleming garnered the 2014 ECAC Rookie of the Year distinction.

Fairfield’s new blood is off to a strong start, with five of them (including transfers and 2016 redshirts) already in the scoring column in 2017.

Starting the ScoringPrior to Travis Ford’s first career goal on Feb. 11 at

Richmond, the last time that Fairfield’s first goal of the spring was netted by a freshman was on Feb. 21, 2009 when Brent Adams ’12 opened the Stags’ scoring in a victory over Delaware – Andy Copelan’s first game as head coach.

Ford’s tally at Richmond was also the first time that Fairfield’s first goal of the season was a man-up marker since John Snellman ’12 scored on the advantage in a win at Lafayette on Feb. 19, 2011.

Becoming a ‘Regular’ OccurrenceThe Stags won back-to-back CAA regular season titles

in their first two seasons as a member of the conference. Fairfield has won the regular season championship in each of the four conferences that the program has called home during its tenure in the NCAA Division I ranks.

The two CAA titles mark three consecutive championships for the Stags, who were regular season champs of the ECAC Lacrosse League in 2014. The Stags are one of three teams in the nation to have won regular season titles in each of the last three campaigns.

Previously in program history, the Stags took home three straight regular season titles in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference from 1996-98 and earned a share of the Great Western Lacrosse League regular season title in both 2002 and 2005 en route to two trips to the NCAA postseason.

A Winning CultureIn its eight prior seasons under the direction of Head Coach

Andy Copelan, Fairfield has registered seven winning records both overall and in conference play. Including his two years as the head man at Marist, Copelan has never coached a team that finished below .500 overall or in its conference en route to a career mark of 92-66.

Entering this weekend, Fairfield is 174-168 (.510) all-time with 13 winning seasons.

Stag WatchingThe Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team will return to

the national stage on Friday, March 17, visiting Penn State for a game set to air live on ESPNU.

Last Saturday’s game against Rutgers was the first of four Lax Sports Network appearances on the docket for the Stags in 2017. LSN will be back at Rafferty Stadium for the regular season finale against Delaware on April 28 in addition to CAA road outings at Drexel on April 8 and Massachusetts on April 15.

All of Fairfield’s home games throughout the 2017 season are scheduled to be broadcast live, including appearances on ESPN3 for the March 25 visit from Villanova and the April 22 CAA meeting with Towson. The remaining home games are slated to air on FairfieldStags.TV.

Game 1: #20 Fairfield at Richmond#20 Stags Fall in Season Opener at Richmond

Ford, Burke and Panepinto each score in 2017 debut

RICHMOND, Va. – Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team dropped a 15-3 decision to host Richmond in its 2017 season opener on saturday, Feb. 11. Travis Ford, Colin Burke and Nico Panepinto had the Stags’ trio of goals, while Charlie Horning and Dylan Beckwith each handed out an assist for the visitors.

Fairfield (0-1) came into the contest ranked No. 20 in the USILA Preseason Coaches’ Poll and as high as No. 17 in national preseason prognostications. Richmond (1-0) entered the season unranked but receiving votes from the USILA and was ranked as high as No. 15 on other national ledgers.

A 1-0 lead was Fairfield’s only advantage of the contest as Ford’s first career tally staked the Stags to a lead at 8:26 in the first quarter. The extra-man marker was set up by a Horning assist. Horning, who had 11 goals and 14 assists last season, extended his streak to 15 consecutive games with a point after his helper this afternoon.

Burke’s goal came in the final minute of the first frame as he converted a feed from Beckwith to rattle the cage. The 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year has totaled a point in all 18 games of his collegiate career after netting his first goal of the young campaign.

Burke’s tally, which cut the Richmond lead to 3-2, marked Fairfield’s last goal for a span of over 11 minutes as the Spiders opened up an 8-2 advantage. At that juncture, Panepinto won a scramble for a ground ball on the door step, scooping and scoring to send the Stags into the locker room facing an 8-3 deficit.

The Stags, however, were unable to score in the second half against the Spiders. Richmond, which was coming off of an 11-5 campaign and a trip to the Southern Conference Championship Game, added seven markers after the intermission to close out a 15-3 final margin.

Tyler Behring started in goal for the Stags and made nine saves to go along with five ground balls. Brad Nordstrom took over the cage for the fourth quarter and turned away five shots.

Richmond was led offensively by four goals and four assists from Teddy Hatfield and a six-point afternoon (4g, 2a) from Ryan Lee. Benny Pugh went the distance in goal and made 14 saves for the Spiders.

Game 2: Fairfield at BucknellTwelve Stags Post Points in 13-12 Win at Bucknell

Colin Burke leads the offense with four goals and two assists

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Twelve different Stags contributed at least one point as the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team topped host Bucknell, 13-12. Colin Burke led the scoring effort with four goals and two assists in the Stags’ first victory of 2017.

In addition to Burke’s six-point day, Fairfield (1-1) got two goals apiece from Jake Knostman and Dave Fleming. Travis Ford netted a goal for the second straight game, while Alex Wagner, Kendall Keahey, Joe DeLasho and Matt Sharpe all converted the first goal of their respective careers. Dylan Beckwith, Jack Brennan and Joe Rodrigues each handed out two assists, while Wagner and Drew Murray contributed one assist apiece.

Fairfield’s 13 goals match the Stags’ 2016 season high attained in wins over Georgetown and Quinnipiac.

DeLasho helped the Stags control possession from the faceoff ‘X’, where he won a career-best 16 draws on 26 attempts. He also came away with a game-high and personal-best 10 ground balls. Will Fox aided the effort with a 2-for-2 day on the draw.

In the cage, Tyler Behring made 14 saves while going the distance to earn the win. In front of Behring, Andrew Eidenshink and Riley Peters each scooped up three ground balls.

Bucknell (2-1) was led by six points (two goals, four assists) from Will Sands, five points (four goals, one assist) by Sean O’Brien and a Connor O’Hara hat trick. Christian Klipstein made 10 saves in goal, ceding 11 of Fairfield’s 13 goals in 57:02 of work.

The Bison struck first in the contest, keeping Fairfield off the board in the first quarter en route to a 2-0 advantage. However, the Stags responded with four straight markers in the second frame. Wagner and Fleming each converted passes from Burke to tie the game at 2-2, and then the 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year rattled the cage himself to put Fairfield in front. Ford added a man-up goal on Murray’s feed to extend the margin to 4-2. Knostman added the first goal of his senior campaign to keep the Stags on top as Bucknell netted a pair to send the game into the intermission with Fairfield leading, 5-4.

Burke and Fleming each scored less than 100 seconds into the third quarter, but the Bison responded in kind to hold the Stags’ lead at one goal, 7-6, with 8:50 to go in the period. At the point, Fairfield accounted for the next four markers, starting with Burke’s second of the day. DeLasho picked up the ensuing faceoff and took it all the way to score his first career goal just eight seconds later. Burke then capped his hat trick, and Keahey added a goal on Rodrigues’ second assist of the afternoon to close the run with the Stags holding an 11-6 lead.

That lead would evaporate, however, as Bucknell accounted for five straight goals over a period of 9:15 to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:54 to play. Sharpe was the man to snap the deadlock, converting a pass from Brennan to put Fairfield back on top, 12-11, with 4:23 to go. Knostman then added the goal that proved to be the game-winner with 2:39 left. Bucknell struck once more in the closing seconds, but DeLasho won his 16th and final draw of the day with Beckwith swooping in to grab the ground ball as time ran out on a 13-12 Fairfield victory.

The Stags went 13-for-17 on faceoffs in the second half with Fox winning both of his attempts and DeLasho posting an 11-for-15 mark over the final two periods.

For the game, the Stags were outshot, 51-34, and won the ground ball battle by a 30-29 count. Fairfield was 12-for-13 clearing the ball and committed 12 turnovers while forcing seven Bucknell giveaways.

Game 3: Fairfield vs. #14 RutgersStags Stopped by #14 Rutgers in Home Opener

Behring makes 16 saves for Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A fast start by visiting Rutgers – ranked No. 14 in the USILA Coaches’ Poll – was enough to hold off the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Tyler Behring made 16 saves for the Stags in the 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Scarlet Knights.

Behring’s 16 saves marked a season high for the senior, who was a First Team All-CAA selection last spring. The defensemen in front of the cage forced 14 Rutgers turnovers, including two caused by Andrew Murrow, who also collected four ground balls.

Offensively, Fairfield (1-2) got goals on the afternoon from Joe Rodrigues, Matt Sharpe and Alex Wagner with Colin Burke notching an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 20 consecutive games.

At the faceoff ‘X’, Joe DeLasho went 4-for-9 while Will Fox added a 3-for-6 performance. The action in the midfield was also aided by Samuel Murphy, who gathered three ground balls to go along with a caused turnover for the sophomore.

After nearly seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse, the Rutgers attack began the stretch that would ultimately decide the game. Jeff George started the scoring at the 8:04 mark in the first quarter, followed less than 60 seconds later by a Jules Heningburg marker. Connor Murphy added the first of his three goals on the day at the 5:28 mark as the Scarlet Knights carried a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Stags were kept off the board until midway through the second quarter, with George and Christian Scarpello each rattling the cage for Rutgers before Rodrigues broke through to cut the deficit to 5-1 with 7:36 remaining in the opening half. However, goals from Casey Rose and Murphy would extend the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 7-1 heading into the intermission.

The Fairfield attack started to click in the opening stages of the third quarter beginning with a Sharpe goal with 13:23 on the clock. Less than a minute later Burke connected with Wagner for a marker that cut the margin to 7-3.

However, while the Fairfield defense kept Rutgers on the board for the entire third quarter – a drought that lasted over 20 minutes of game time in total – the Stags would not score again in the contest. Rutgers ended their dry spell with 10:02 to play as Murphy completed his hat trick for the Scarlet Knights to round out the 8-3 final score.

Both goalkeepers did their part in the second half with Behring making nine of his 16 stops after the break and Rutgers’ netminder Max Edelmann making six of his nine saves following halftime.

Rutgers (3-0) was led by Murphy’s hat trick and two goals from George. Rose added a goal and two assists for the Scarlet Knights.
