Parish Council meeting

The next meeting will be in the Community Hall on Thursday

9th October at 7.30pm. All welcome!

Your Parish Council website has details of local news and events as well as the dates and minutes of the council’s monthly meetings and links to other community organisations. The address is fairfieldparishcouncil.gov.uk.

Work is due to start at the end of the year on restoring the historic Fairfield East and West Orchards, and the Parish Council is hoping that YOU will get involved.

Few subjects invoke so much passion among residents as the Orchards that have been neglected for so many years. A planning application for homes on part of the West Orchard drew a record number of objections to Central Bedfordshire Council.

Now is the opportunity to show that strength of feeling in a practical way!

Since its inception the Parish Council have been trying to seek out whose responsibility they are. Having resolved this conundrum they are currently in advanced talks about their future.

Gerry Edwards, chair of the RHS Fruit Committee and an expert on historic orchards, has given his advice, and a three-year plan has been drawn up to work on restoring and re-shaping the Orchards.

Some of the work involves specialists but the council hope that a “Friends of the Orchards” group can be formed to help with this work and then take over future maintenance.

A public meeting is being called for Wednesday 29th October at 7.30pm in the Community Hall to both discuss the plan and seek out enthusiasts. Full training and some equipment will be supplied. If enough people are forthcoming then it will be possible to set up teams so that work can take place on both Orchards simultaneously.

The i deal t ime t o w ork o n t he o rchards is between December and March. So volunteers must be prepared to work during the coldest part of the year. But it is anticipated that you need to give up no more than two hours at a time. The plan may be downloaded from the parish council website at fairfieldparishcouncil. gov.uk. Any questions please email [email protected].

Work on the Parish Plan Survey is almost complete and it will be delivered to all residents in October.

The final touches to the design are now being made following testing of the initial draft by volunteers. This identified minor changes to ensure the questions were clear and straight forward to answer.

Hopefully as many households as possible will complete this survey.  This is your opportunity to voice your opinions and make a difference to our community. The results will provide the Parish Council with the necessary steer to prioritise actions that will address the important issues that will improve our environment and quality of life.

Parish Plan Survey

The Standalone 10k race takes place on Sunday

5th October, from 9.30am. Local road closures will

be in place along Stotfold Road. Please see signage

FAIRFIELD YOUTH CLUB NEEDS YOU!

URGENT CALL FOR HELPDO YOU want to help the young people of Fairfield enjoy their youth club?

Fairfield Youth Club has gone from strength to strength since its opening in April 2013. We now face a crisis as our professional Youth Leader has been promoted and the organisation we use has been unsuccessful in finding a replacement. This paid position is just right for someone interested in helping Fairfield’s teenagers enjoy their club.

You may be interested, or know someone who is - we pay for three hours from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Friday evenings, although the club runs from 7pm to 9pm.

It’s proving difficult to recruit a professional Youth Leader for Friday nights. However, the Youth Club is popular with our young folk, with up to 35 regular attendees aged 11 - 17. The club operates in term time only and so this role may suit a teacher, teaching assistant or someone looking to go into that type of work. Duties include making sure the register is completed and collecting the £1 admission, as well

as organising various activities. Five a side football experience would be helpful especially when it comes to blowing the whistle and scoring.

Besides the usual tuck shop, there is table tennis, pool, Xbox, and Mac computer, as well as badminton and netball for the attendees. Cookery is popular, as is tie-dying, craftwork and art. Often though, on a Friday night the young people just want to catch up with their friends in a relaxed, supervised, safe environment. This can be an antidote to the school week, and with homework off the agenda, it is time for many to chill and chat.

Working with young people can be very rewarding and a team of around a dozen volunteers is there to support the professional Youth Leader.

For the right applicant we can help with DBS checks, training etc.

This paid position is available now – so if you are interested pleaseemail Steve Ward at: [email protected] The Youth club started back on 5th September.

Welcome Chris Jones, new Scanlans manager

Chris Jones is the new property manager for Scanlans, the managing agents for Fairfield Park. Chris has taken over from Nicola Fagan who has left Scanlans for pastures new. He has been involved

in property management for more than eight years exclusively in the leasehold world. So dealing with a rent charge and freehold properties will be a new experience.

He will be continuing the monthly surgeries. The next one is scheduled for Friday 3rd October at the Community Hall between 6pm and 8pm.

I would like to thank the young people of Fairfield for the overwhelming response to the competition to design the community garden project to be located adjacent to the bowls club.

We had 137 entries to the competition. The next step to create a space for all to enjoy, will be the amalgamation of the winning designs from the

competition into a landscaping and planting plan.

The judges will be meeting this month to choose the winners and runners up, whose names will be published in next month’s Fairfield Matters. Anyone wishing to take part in this exciting project should contact me on [email protected] Oliver

Local estate agents First Step made a generous donation of £1000 to Fairfield Youth Club earlier this summer. The photo below shows members of the scout group accepting the cheque, the money will be put to very good use.

A Big Thanks to First Step Estate Agents

They don’t just play rugby - they make wine too!

Wines from New Zealand were presented at last month’s wine tasting club, and it just goes to show that you can grow grapes nearly anywhere, even deep in the South Island!

The presenters have both lived in New Zealand so knew what they were talking about, they had a good selection of white and red wines from both North and South Islands, featuring grapes that are widely grown in Europe. However they all had a distinct taste and were all very good, including a sparkling rosé.

The wines were chosen to be representative of what New Zealand has to offer, and were mostly selected from the wide range currently available from The Wine Society at Stevenage.

If you are interested in joining the wine tasting club please contact Mrs Rita Smith by email at [email protected]. Community Garden

Are you a parent or a local person with time to give and high aspirations for our children, our staff and our place in the community? Do you think strategically and feel you could add value to our existing team of Governors? Do you want to make a difference?

We are looking for governors who will have the skills required to contribute to the continued success of this outstanding school at a time of considerable growth and change. We are a very well established team and are looking to interview and appoint suitable people who can think strategically and add value to our governing body. We are especially interested in people who can demonstrate practical experience in: strategic leadership, education, finance and business management, marketing, legal and ICT.

Governing Bodies focus on three core strategic functions:· ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

· holding the Head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; and

· overseeing the financial performance of the school.

As a Governor, you will act in the best interests of the school and the wider community. Governors are expected to attend all full Governing Body meetings and committee meetings as appropriate. The full Governing Body meets twice per term. You should meet the relevant statutory eligibility criteria for Governors as set out in the School Governance Regulations and agree to an enhanced disclosure check by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

If you have the skills, knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment we are looking for, then please contact [email protected] or download an application form on our website www.fairfield.beds.sch.uk/governors. Applications close on 24 October 2014, interviews will take place in the weeks commencing 3 or 10 November 2014.
