NEW QUEEN’S HALL ORCHESTRAHandel’s Messiah (Edition: Ebenezer Prout 1902)Conductor Richard Cook

Royal Choral Society and Soloists

‘What the English like is something that they can beat time to, something that hits themstraight on the drum of the ear’. Handel often hid his genius behind a simplicity thatstrikes a chord in the modern listener. Indeed, his standing was such that Beethoven said,‘Handel is the greatest and ablest of all composers: I can still learn from him’.

Messiah is Handel’s crowning glory. Basedon texts taken from the Bible and the Bookof Common Prayer his most famousoratorio deals with the prophesies ofChrist’s coming, of his Birth, Passion andResurrection and ends with His glorificationin heaven. To hear a large body of voicessupported by an orchestra of appropriateinstruments is an opportunity to hearHandel’s best-loved work as it was givenbefore the emotional impact of the musicbecame secondary to the dry and dustyneed for editorial authenticity.

TCHAIKOVSKY Romeo and Juliet Fantasy OvertureRACHMANINOV Rhapsody on a Theme of PaganiniRIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade

Emerging from a musical family, talented British conductor Alexander Shelley has firmlyestablished himself on the international concertscene and makes a welcome return to the RoyalPhilharmonic Orchestra for this spectacularprogramme. The dramatic Romeo and JulietFantasy Overture, for many the mostperfect expression of the fate of those star-cross’d lovers is followed by Rachmaninov’slushly-scored set of variations for piano andorchestra, performed by Peter Jablonski.Scheherazade, a series of musical talesdrawn from The Arabian Nights, remainsRimsky-Korsakov’s best-loved work. Thescoring is masterly, and its heady mix ofsumptuous melody and overwhelmingorchestral climaxes has servedto maintain the universalpopularity of the score.
