    OCTOBER 2012

We again encounter the first of the autumn months. For many harvest has been going strong, at least the corn harvest has. As I was driving over to Ohio for attendance at school I noticed in some places the corn was late (green) and beans were being harvested instead. I began to reflect on the prayers of blessing many farmers would be saying at this time in the hope that the drought of the summer had not completely ruined their crops. Often this prayer begins with the person asking to receive an abundant harvest. This is often accompanied by the attempt to engage God in a barter system-one in which we promise to do or act in some specific manner if only we are specially blessed through our prayers. The reality is that most will never complete this agreement on the human side as we prefer to claim it is through our own hard work; credit is never given to God. Yahweh (God) always held up the other side of the agreement and this is what we begin to understand as we read scripture. The bible is a story of Gods restoration of humanity this why it is impossible to claim that the works we read as canonical scripture are all there is. One only needs to look at an ear of corn, or the pods on a bean bush to see the abundance in biblical terms; three fold, increase of 60%, even the doubling 100% of the planting. We also approach a month in which the children look forward to a time of fun and frolic as they trick or treat on Halloween. Like a farmers field, there is a time when those bags and buckets are empty. Each child in their own manner is breathing the same prayer as the farmer; please God, provide me abundance. Halloween offers us a great opportunity to use a secular fun time to help our children learn about God. We look forward to all of those who will help out at our trunk or treat on October 31. On the 28th of October, Sunday, we will have some fun as we have a Zombie and Vampire Day of worship. I encourage each and every one to reflect on the idea of zombies and vampires as it relates to our Christian lives.

    Peace be with you,

    Pastor Roger

  • Five volunteers traveled to Second Harvest in St. Joseph Thursday, September 13th. DeAnna Coggin, Jeremy Pfaff, Pastor Roger, Bob and Amy Sefrit were given the task of filling back pack food bags. There were 3 assem-bly lines allowing for different food items to be given out each week. The group filled 600 bags with the help of DeAnna stopping to make the 60 boxes needed and

Jeremy and Pastor Roger keeping the assembly line filled with the designated food when needed. Many changes are going on at Second Harvest. If you have not been able to volunteer or have not been down to Second Harvest for a while, mark you calendars for November 8th which will be the next Fairfax UMC volunteer opportunity.

2 Members of the Fairfax UMC Junior High Class and five girl scouts plan to attend YouthFest 2012 at the Festival of Sharing in Sedalia, MO October 19th and 20th.

Friday evening the girls will attend a program on world hunger. They will sleep in one of the area churches. Saturday will be spent helping organize and pack the items brought to the Festival of Sharing as servants to the hungry in Missouri and the world. Their work concludes

with a worship service late Saturday afternoon before returning home. Sam O'Riley and Amy Sefrit are the adult sponsors of this mission trip.

Please pray for these youth as they travel and are in ministry at the festival.

  • Thanks to the hard work of our Simulcast Team

Sisters in Spirit. . . we had 85 people attend the Beth Moore Living Proof Live Simulcast on Sept., 15! We had attendees from about all of our small surrounding towns in Northwest Missouri as well as up into Iowa over to Maryville and down to St. Joseph.

Beth Moore talked about how women can restore their faith. She used 2 Kings chapter 4 for her lesson. The Bible Verse for the day was Psalm 68:11 (NLV) 11 The Lord gives the Word. And the women who tell the good news are many.

Door prizes where given out and there was coffee and muf-fins and more for when the ladies got there in the morning and a lunch was also served to all.

A special thanks go out to all of the Sisters in Spirit: Gale Ball & Charla Graves (Fairfax), Michele Hawkins (Skidmore), Regina Quimby & Cathy Riggins (Westboro), Sue Davis, Brooke Walton & Norma Villagrana (Tarkio), Barb Hanlon & Nancy Nauman (Mound City) and Beverly Christians & Vicki Cook (Rock Port).
