Energy Efficiency ExampleEnergy Efficiency Example

Government Center Project:

1. Installed Constant volume air handling units with variable frequency drives and energy efficient motors

2. Replaced all existing lighting fixtures (T8 32W lamps) with T8 28W lamps

3. Upgraded lighting control software

Cost: $510,000 (one-time, nonrecurring cost)

Benefit: $83,000/year lower electricity costs + 2.4 million pounds of CO2 reduced.

Payback: 6.1 years

Renewable EnergyRenewable Energy

• Wind Energy

• Landfill Gas Recovery & Utilization

• Waste to Energy

Page 17: Fairfax County’s Environmental Initiatives Kambiz Agazi June 11, 2008

Renewable Energy ExampleRenewable Energy Example

I-66 Landfill Gas To Energy Project:

1. Installed 2,500 feet of four inch HDPE pipe from a flare station at the closed I-66 Landfill to the Department of Vehicle Services Garage at the West Ox Facility

2. Installed radiant heaters designed to use landfill gas (50% methane content)

Cost: $300,000 (one-time, nonrecurring cost – design/build)

Benefit: $70,000/year lower natural gas costs + methane gas usage

Payback: 4.3 years
