From the Headmaster The College’s theme for 2013 is “Value Fairbairn”.

The College mascot for the eight weeks of the Big Walk money collection was Mr Astro Green … [ask a Fairbairn learner to explain!] The 2013 College theme, Mr Astro Green and the noises from the Astro Turf construction site of front-end loaders and other heavy machinery has spurred our learners to perform beyond expectation in the annual Big Walk fund raiser. R 475 707.07 – A NEW SCHOOL RECORD! [Further detail is supplied elsewhere in this newsletter]

Mr Astro Green

Congratulations to all! A hearty thank you is expressed to learners, parents and staff for their tremendous support. This is indeed an extraordinary effort. These funds are earmarked for paying for the retiling of the College’s top floor. The remainder of the funds will be put towards the Campus Development Project, namely; the astro turf. Mr Hanekom is to be congratulated on a superbly organised “Surf Walk”. A successful Governing Body By-Election was conducted at Fairbairn College on 27 February 2013. Mr Ismail Sayed is to be congratulated on his election.

At the end of term we say farewell to Miss Smit. Miss Smit will pursue a career in the South African Police Force. We say thank you to Miss Smit for her contribution to the College in so many spheres: the Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy departments, 1st team girls’ Tennis coach, Hockey coach, member of the Sport Management Council and Napier’s House mistress. Fairbairn wishes you well. We welcome Miss Cooke as Miss Smit’s replacement in Term 2.

In the newsletter we congratulate staff members who; have married, become engaged and share in the joy of a staff member’s daughter who was selected to represent South Africa!

PASTORAL AND DISCIPLINE

Grade 8 Induction and Fun Day Fairbairn College offers an induction programme to new Grade 8 learners. The aim of this day is for the new learners to become acquainted with the layout of the building, to meet their class teachers and for certain administrative tasks to be completed. This day is organised by the Grade Head with the assistance of the RCL-executive body.

This activity is followed by a Fun Day which usually takes place on the 1st Saturday of the term. The Fun Day begins with a roll call, followed by an icebreaker and ten rounds of fun activities. The day ends with a watermelon feast and a dip in the pool. The aim of the Fun Day is for the Grade 8 learners to feel at home in their new surroundings. It is organised entirely by the RCL-executive body under the watchful eyes of the register teachers and the Grade Head. Inter House Athletics and G4 Athletics Meetings This year, we started earlier with our preparations for the G4 meeting with our early-morning practices. It was amazing to see how many learners made use of the opportunity to improve their fitness levels. Their efforts showed in the excellent Inter House Athletics meeting that took place on 31 January 2013. The day belonged to Somerset, followed by Grey and Napier. While the athletes were busy preparing for their events, the rest of the houses’ members and their cheerleaders were practising as well. The Spirit Stick is becoming a coveted item. This year, Grey House is the winner of the Spirit Trophy with Somerset and Napier close behind. President High School hosted the G4 meeting this year. For the safety of our athletes, it was decided that the meeting would be held far away from the school at a venue where access control could be exercised. The facilities at CPUT are ideal for a meeting of this nature. Despite our early morning preparation, our athletes did not do as well as expected. We thus only brought home two of the trophies with JG Meiring winning the majority of the events. Congratulations to Matthew Nelson and Lauren van der Poel. Water Sports The Founder’s Day ceremony in the hall is usually followed by Water Sports. Water Sports was introduced in 2000 in place of the Cadet Parade when it was no longer possible to offer cadets to the boys. This event was a hit right from the start. It is unbelievable how much our modern teenagers enjoy having good, “clean” fun while being sprayed with water or sliding down a slippery, muddy canvass. Even the younger staff now team up to take part in the fun. The activities are scored by the teachers in charge and a Senior and Junior winning team is declared. Each member of a winning team is rewarded with a cooldrink and packet of chips.

Big Walk 2013 The Big Walk of 2013 was, like all the years before, a huge success. We are extremely proud of our learners and parents who, in a short space of time, are able to collect such a large sum of money. The state of the economy does not make our job any easier, but Fairbairn learners seem to be oblivious to that “little” problem. We took to the white beach sands at Kreeftebaai on Friday, 15 March to honour our promise to the contributors to walk 10km. The weather and the tides played along perfectly and our learners enjoyed their outing tremendously. We have perfected the art of leaving the beaches and the parking area in a better condition than we found it.

We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Alves (Snack-a-tac), Mr Jewell at Peninsula Beverages and Mr Amien (Quality Beverages) for their generous sponsorships. Each learner received a cooldrink and a packet of chips at the end of the walk. Mr D Hanekom HEAD: PASTORAL Representative Council of Learners We congratulate the following learners, who were elected by their peers as representatives on the RCL: GRADE 8: Azhar Cader, Cindy Jardine, Cameron Seboa. GRADE 9: Dawood Miller, Jeanré Conradie, Aarti Ranchod. GRADE 10: Zedré Thomas, Sean Weber, Thando Dyanti. GRADE 11: Lusanda Mhlambiso, Carly Pedro, Sebusang Lekhuleni. GRADE 12: Kelly Hill, Gareth Pauls, Thaaqib Daniels. The role of the RCL was identified as follows:

1. To act as Grade representatives. Essentially their role is that of communication between the Grade and the Headmaster and providing feedback to the Grade.

2. To uphold the ethos of Fairbairn College. 3. To make suggestions and be involved in improvements to the school. RCL Executive A big thank you to the RCL Executive for their tireless efforts in performing their duties on a daily basis. They form a vital cog in the discipline structure and their input is of immense value. Thank you also to the Head and Deputy Head prefects for their leadership in this regard. Well done to this group on their organisation of the Grade 8 “Fun Day” as well as their assistance with the Grade 8 orientation – both very successful events. Mr M Koffeman DEPUTY HEADMASTER Class Captains At an assembly earlier this term, the Class Captains were officially inducted and were presented with their badges of office. We congratulate the following learners on their appointments:

School Discipline Discipline remains one of the cornerstones upon which the College is built, and is a task from which we will not waiver. A few areas of concern: • The number of learners who arrive late for school in the mornings is unacceptable. • A large number of learners do not arrive for their Grade Head Detentions towards the end of the term. These learners are all punished, but I would like to remind learners and parents alike, that the penalty for not attending a Grade Head Detention remains Saturday morning Detention. • Grooming: Too many learners arrive at school with dirty blazers – these can be machine washed. Many of the blazers have missing buttons – these may be purchased at the bookroom. A reminder to all the boys that they are expected to wear a belt as part of their uniform and also, that all boys are required to be cleanly shaven every day. • Two reminders: Boys’ hair inspection on the 1st day of term, and girls must wear winter uniform from the start of Term 2. I ask for the co-operation of the learners and the assistance of the parents regarding these matters, and by so doing, maintaining the high standards of the College. Thank you. Mr M Koffeman HEAD OF DISCIPLINE

Founder’s Day

Founder’s Day was celebrated on 22 February 2013. Founder’s Day was once again one of the highlights of the term. We were very privileged and proud to have Dr Barney van Dyk, who matriculated at Fairbairn in 1981, as the guest speaker. Dr van Dyk is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and guided our learners on how to travel the road to success.

Our learners’ excellent behaviour once again made us very proud. How fortunate we are to be a learner, staff member, governing body member or parent at this fine institution. We can, and must all Value Fairbairn! Mrs E le Grange MISTRESS IN CHARGE – COLLEGE CEREMONIES Human Rights Day

On Monday, 18 March, we took time in our assembly to reflect on Human Rights Day. (21 March) Taariq Aziz and Sumaya Kader addressed the school. Once again our learners were made aware of our history and what happened at Sharpeville. Learners were reminded that rights lead to responsibilities. Fairbairn strives to raise responsible and fair young people. A Big thank you to Taariq and Sumaya! Mrs E le Grange OPERATIONS

EXTRA-MURAL ACTIVITIES

Culture Eisteddfods/Competitions/Other We are proud of the learners who took part in the English Olympiad this term. It was an extremely challenging 3 hour exam and we are excited that our learners are still willing to extend themselves in such an intellectually challenging way. This term the learners at Fairbairn College have also extended themselves by entering in SIXTY EIGHT activities for the Tygerberg Eisteddfod, 2013. We look forward to the feedback of these events as we know that they will participate with enthusiasm and highlight the many talented individuals we host at our school. Congratulations to the following three classes for being placed First, Second and Third respectively in the TERM 1 school spelling competition: A1 (with an average of 9/10), D2 (with an average of 8.72/10) and A3 (with an average of 8.56/10). The focus on reading also continues with our READ lesson every Thursday at Fairbairn College, where the sweet magical sound of quiet envelops the school. We are very proud of the following learners who participated in a Sound and Lighting training course over a period of two weekends: Ismail Ibrahim, Daniel Bugg, Ruan Liebenberg, Taahir Soeker, Yaakira Khalpey, Liam Smith, Watheeq Daniels, Lusanda Mhlambiso and Dillon Barends.

We are very proud of the following learners who received their level one First Aid certificates this term: Nathan Lind (captain), Rebecca Visser (vice-captain), Cenza Rhoda (vice-captain), Peter Amos, Henri Theron, Chelsey Phillips, Jessica Archer, Zahraa Davids, Chloé de Kock, Fazlyn Ryklief, Munawwar Johnson, Leandra Walker, Carlyn Peckham, Musaaddiq Razaak and Dilshaad Razak. We also need to congratulate Terri-Anne Speelman and Aasha Parshotam who participated in an Acting competition at Bellville High School. Again, we are proud of the learners who represent our school in the Arts. Miss G Correia Head – English Department Interact On Saturday, 16 March, 9 of our learners joined the STOP HUNGER PROJECT at Goodwood’s Leo Club, packing 9000 food hampers. This will be distributed by STOP HUNGER in the Western Cape. The Interact Society was informed of a family in desperate need of food and our learners made up a food hamper to be delivered to them. We are involved in the Grandparents’ Day at Protea Old Age Home, where our learners will spoil the residents. We plan on having a few items and a small gift for each lady and gentleman as well as eats and drinks. This will only happen on 27 April - more about this later. We are still collecting bread tags to purchase a wheelchair for people who cannot afford it. We have a total of 50 000 bread tags at the moment, but need to collect a million. We plan on handing over the amount of R4 000 to STOP HUNGER in June. We already have R1 458. We rely on donations from our parents and our learners. Choir The Choir had a very successful first term. We prepared for Founder’s Day and commenced studying the music for the Tygerberg Eisteddfod where the Choir will perform in Term 2. The Choir’s performance at our Founder’s Day Celebrations of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from GF Handel’s Messiah, was as usual, a highlight of the ceremony - a fine tradition that both Choir members and audience always enjoy. On Friday, 15 March 2013, the Choir departed with 60 learners and 5 teachers for their annual Choir camp at the beautiful Noordhoek camping site. It was characterised by fantastic food, more than five hours of practising, games, swimming, a group concert and Choir members who never slept. The Choir returned on Sunday, 17 March 2013. The Choir committee would like to thank Ms Marais, Mrs van Tonder and Mr Pienaar for giving up their time to attend the camp and for buying and preparing all the delicious food. Without your help the Choir camp would not have been possible. We would also like to thank Mr and Mrs Koffeman for attending the camp and very importantly, a vote of thanks to Manuels Bus Services for their transport and bringing us safely back home. I would like to thank my dear colleague Mrs Bruwer for making all the arrangements. Without you, there would be no Choir camp! Lastly, I would like to thank all Choir members for their hard work during this term. We, as the teachers, are grateful to work with such talented learners.

Mr P Botes CHOIR DIRECTOR Summer Sports

Sports’ Captains Our Summer Sports’ Captains for 2013 are: Cricket – Chad Africa, Boys’ Waterpolo – Claudio Texeira, Girls’ Waterpolo – Kelly Hill, Girls’ Tennis – Samantha Gay and Boys’ Tennis – Aashiq Dalvie. Swimming The swimming season started off with our annual Interhouse Gala, followed shortly by the first Interschool Gala, hosted on home ground. We did very well in this gala, securing a 3rd place out of the six participating schools. The following two gala’s were hosted by Parklands and Fairmont. Also in these gala’s the Swimming team showed faster times than the previous year. There seems to be an overall improvement in the boys’, as well as in the girls’ swimming times. It is thus with great pleasure that I congratulate the following learners for qualifying for scrolls:

Gareth Pauls I would also like to take this opportunity to convey my thanks to our Swimming coach, Lynette Engelbrecht and my assistant MIC, Ms Saayman for spending afternoons next to the swimming pool. Last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you to the social Swimming coaches – Ms Bergh, Ms van der Merwe and Ms de Wet. These teachers help the new swimmers to acquire the important basic skills needed to excel in swimming. Miss C Els MISTRESS IN CHARGE - SWIMMING Girls’ Waterpolo We commenced training a week before school started. There were days that our school pool was out of bounds and we then trained at the Bellville Municipal pool. Most first team players attended, including Robyn Pinder, broken thumb and all. It was with a shock that we realised that our coach had gone overseas, so he was promptly replaced by Euwon Valentine. I am sure all agree that he provided a new dimension to the game, resulting in a big improvement. Many Grade 8 girls joined Waterpolo and it was easy to spot the potential. Time was spent on skills and fitness.

Page 12: FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE · UCT DEAN’S MERIT LIST - 2012 Darryl Brown - 2nd Angela Wu - 8th Dominique de Oliveira - 20th Fairbairn has 3 past pupils (Class of 2011) in the Top 20 on the

Our opponents were very determined to win, and many games were very close. However, regardless of the outcome, the girls learned a lot and enjoyed the Waterpolo. A very important resulting outcome is “building character!”

It is crucial that the players remain fit throughout winter, as we would like to make an earlier start next season’s practices. We are looking forward to summer. The senior team played good Waterpolo and was led by Kelly Hill. She always made a plan and was a prolific goal scorer. Well done! Chantelle Tittleton and Alex Christians were also regular goal scorers!

Enjoy the winter sport and good luck with the academics! Mrs M Ackermann MIC – GIRLS’ WATERPOLO Boys’ Waterpolo Although the Waterpolo season was very disjointed this term due to all the Friday activities (Gala, Athletics, Founder’s Day), we did honour all six of our fixtures. At the end of 2012 our senior team “lost” a number of players due to the Matrics coming to the end of their high school careers. Thus the process of rebuilding began. Mr Valentine, a past pupil, assisted with the coaching and our boys started playing more structured Waterpolo. We had one or two very narrow losses (Herzlia and Somerset College), but finished our season with a victory over Groote Schuur (10-4). Our junior team players (many playing Waterpolo for the first time) are beginning to grasp the game and look set to becoming a formidable side in the future - victories over Fish Hoek (10-0) and Groote Schuur (12-2). Thank you to the parents for their loyal support – we look forward to Term 4 and even better results. Mr M Koffeman MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ WATERPOLO Cricket

I would like to start by thanking all our coaches for their hard work and dedication. Few people realise what Cricket coaches have to endure during the Cricket season. They spend long hours in the sun, coaching and umpiring matches which often end late on Saturdays. A very special word of thanks to Chantel Tittleton and her very industrious group of helpers who are on duty at the clubhouse on Saturdays to ensure that our teams are served with cooldrinks and lunches, often staying late to wash and dry dishes and glasses. Your hard work is much appreciated, girls. Our 1st Cricket team has had a difficult start to the season, playing against Stellenberg and Brackenfell in the first two matches of the season. The quality of the opposition was no less formidable during the last few weeks of the season and the boys are to be commended on the excellent fighting spirit they displayed throughout. Most of the matches were narrowly

lost. The most noticeable achievements by team members was Chad Africa 75, Justin Vercuil 63 and Curtley Thomas taking 5 wickets for 25, all against Tygerberg High. Our two regular 1st Team score keepers: Samantha Gay and Jessica Yang are to be commended on their dedication throughout the season. The U/15A’s had to face some tough opposition during the first part of the season. They did, however, manage a good win in their second match when they played WP Cricket Club. Excellent fielding was the key to their victory on the day. They train hard and each and every player shows dedication and commitment. They have a will to win. We hope that the second part of the season will be more fortunate for the team. Dylan Best, the captain of the U/15A team has been selected to represent the first team in the second part of the season. We wish him well - we know he can do it!

Our U/14A Cricket team has had a fantastic start to the season, winning all their league games and eventually qualifying for the semi-final versus DF Malan. The boys lost off the very last few balls during this match but they need to be commended on their excellent performance on the day. Victories during this first part of the season include comprehensive victories over Fairmont, De Kuilen and Parklands College. We are really proud of the way this team gave only of their best since their very first match and we still expect great things from them.

Mr E Swart MASTER IN CHARGE - CRICKET Girls’ Tennis The girls had a long season. We played some hard matches against very good opponents. The results did not always go our way, but the girls kept trying. Thank you to Christine Rossouw, our outside coach, for her hard work. Well done to Napier for winning the Inter House competition. Miss M Smit MISTRESS IN CHARGE – GIRLS’ TENNIS/VOLLEYBALL Boys’ Tennis

The boys’ 1st team played in the second league against Northern Suburbs schools. Unfortunately our team lost 2 and drew 2 matches during Term 1. Aashiq Dalvie (Captain), Hassan Moydien, Luke Moolman and Fu-An Ni all played exceptional Tennis, at times against better opponents. Congratulations on your good win in the play-off match against Pinelands High School and your great team spirit throughout the season. The 2nd team consisted of mainly four players: Fu-San Ni, Marco Ribeiro, Mustafa Arif (Captain) and Marco Jonkers. Mr Schütz shared your disappointment of losing 5 matches, but having played against many 1st teams who entered their team in the third league, this result came as no surprise. We will make sure it will not happen again! The 3rd team consisted of Wasseem Fakier (Captain), Craig Sauls, Matthew Williams and Magmood-Ali Parker. They played 5 matches in the fourth league, drew 1 and lost 4. Mrs de Wet is very proud of the good team spirit under all circumstances and she enjoyed every moment being with the team.

Our group of Tennis players included 12 reserve players who also received coaching with the 12 team players. We could see the improvement in skills levels and Mrs Rossouw’s efforts and enthusiasm is much appreciated. Thank you to our team managers, Mr Schütz and Mrs de Wet, for their efforts and dedication over the past few weeks.

Mr T Russouw MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ TENNIS Debating Both our teams lost against Camps Bay High. Both teams won against Good Hope Girls’ School with Amy Rugan as best junior speaker. Winter Sports We extend a hearty welcome to all parents to support our sports teams during the Winter season, particularly on Saturday mornings. During the Winter season, there is always a wonderful atmosphere prevailing at home matches. The Tuckshop is open at the Club House and does a roaring trade in coffee and boerewors rolls. The First Netball team play matches on Thursday afternoons and would also appreciate your support. FINANCES School Fees
