FAIR OAKS RANCH
September 2012 Volume 2, Issue 9Newsletter for the Residents of Fair Oaks Ranch
FAIR OAKSGAZETTE
By Mark A. Peterson Many folks have relocated to San Antonio and had
to leave their previous landscaping experience behind. First of all, welcome!
There are a couple of important things to note about your new hometown: Humidity and hot temperatures are facts of life, but it does cool down eventually. Still, San Antonio does present unique opportunities for gardening, so it helps to know what to plant for a beautiful landscape that doesn’t cost a fortune to maintain.
For new residents from the Northeast who crave good fall color, there’s Bigtooth maple, crape myrtle and sumac, as well as pansies, petunias and geraniums.
If you’re a transplant from the southwest U.S. or northern Mexico, you can grow most of the plants you’re familiar with, and very likely with less irrigation.
And for our new residents from interior Mexico, your native plants like bougainvillea and poinsettia will fare well here albeit with special care.
Check out our new website for ideas on water conservation, recommended plants and a review of drought regulations. SAWS also offers free conservation consultations and landscape assistance, which can help you seamlessly adjust to your new climate.Mark A. Peterson is a conservation project coordinator
for San Antonio Water System.

Peru has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but the benefits from this growth are concentrated into the hands of a few. In polls preceding the presidential election 2011, about 80% of the population expressed dissatisfaction with the country¹s economy. This is striking in a country that has experienced such strong economic growth, and indicates what other studies show: that economic growth hasn¹t reached the country¹s poor and middle-class. Rural areas are especially left out of this prosperity.
I spent four months working for an NGO in rural Perú before realizing that Perú has one of the lowest electrification rates in Latin America. So I teamed up with Computers for Communities to solve this problem. CFC, Computers for Communities, is a US 501c3 [http://computers4communities.org] that aims to bring electricity to those in Perú that are in need through its partnership with the world’s leading manufacturer of personal solar powered lanterns, d.light. D.light has proven successful in providing solar-rechargeable LED lanterns as alternatives to kerosene in India, Africa and Asia.
Over 20% of Peruvians (6.5 million) have no access to electricity at all. Of these, 23% are from the national population and 67% are from the rural population. If they can afford it, families may get light from kerosene, candles, and batteries. On average, these cost each family $6 per month for 2 hours of electricity per day. Some families, especially in rural communities, do without extended daylight. This shortens their day considerably, as a typical day in Peru averages less than twelve hours of natural light, with the sun setting by 6:00pm.
Computers for Communities has started a campaign to bring SOLAR POWERED personal lights to these people in Peru. The lights are incredible, and just what they need! YOU CAN HELP by purchasing any amount of lights. All purchases will be distributed DIRECTLY to students and families in communities that we have been working with in the mountains of Peru. Visit http://computers4communities.org and click on the link “Lights for Communities” to make your donation.
Before my work in Peru, I worked for Africa’s first and only burns charity, Children of Fire. To read a little about my time in Africa, here is an article written by Temple University: http://smc.temple.edu/murl/2011/08/20/south-africa-young-fire-victims-get-help/. Before taking on the solar project in Peru with CFC, I worked in rural Peru for Awamaki. Awamaki is a small non-profit that works to create economic opportunities and improve social well-being in rural Peru. It is registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) and in Peru as a non-profit civil association. Awamaki is diversified and currently runs programs in health, education, cultural preservation and sustainable tourism. Awamaki is located in the town of Ollantaytambo, which is between Cusco, the Inca capital city and tourist mecca, and Machu Picchu, a U.N. World Heritage site and tourist destination. Ollantaytambo is the departure point for Machu Picchu, which nearly half a million tourists visit every year.

FAIR OAKS RANCHNational PSA Study by Local Researcher Stands in Contrast to
U.S. Task Force RecommendationsPSA testing may be under fire by the U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force, but a paper published today in the Journal of Urology by a local researcher shows that prostate cancer deaths have declined sharply since it came into regular use.
The “PSA era” — the era in which PSA testing for prostate cancer became routine for about half of the men in the U.S. — began in 1990. Since then, the rate of men dying from prostate cancer has dropped by 44 percent. What’s more, the study found that the enormous disparity in death rates for African American and Caucasian men with advanced disease has shrunk to the point of insignificance.
Ian M. Thompson Jr., M.D., director of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, worked with Catherine M. Tangen, Ph.D., of the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle to analyze the data from three large studies starting in the mid-1980s, and they concluded that PSA testing has a proven positive role in assessing prostate cancer risk.
“While not all of these welcome improvements can be attributed strictly to PSA testing, without a doubt it has played a role in extending many lives,” Dr. Thompson said.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test is commonly used to look for the markers of prostate cancer.
The PSA test has come under fire for being overused to diagnose prostate cancer without taking other factors into account. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended in May that doctors stop doing routine PSA tests on men of any age.
The task force members looked at data from three different studies suggesting that a focus on PSA screening and treatment in recent years has had marginal benefits at great cost.
But the new analysis stands in contrast to their conclusions.Dr. Thompson and Dr. Tangen looked at data from three clinical
trials done through SWOG, a multi-institutional group that conducts
nationwide cancer clinical trials. The studies evaluated patient survival after androgen deprivation treatment (ADT) for prostate cancer.
Median survival in the first trial, which enrolled patients from 1985 to 1986, was 30 months, and median survival in the second,
which enrolled patients from 1989 to 1994, was 33 months. In contrast, median survival in the third trial, which enrolled patients from 1995 to 2009, was 49 months.
“What this really means is that PSA testing has an entire range of effects,” Dr. Thompson said. “As shown in an enormous European study of screening, simply screening men with PSA will save some lives. It also means that even if you find the disease when it’s advanced — even then — you get a big benefit by finding it earlier. In so many ways, so many lives are saved.”
For African-American men in the first trial, median survival was 27 months, while in the last trial analyzed, their survival rate had increased to 48 months.
“We hypothesize that this improvement is based on greater awareness of prostate cancer among African-American men, and more willingness to see a doctor about it,” Dr. Thompson said. However, African-American men have a two- to three-fold greater incidence of newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer compared to white men, and that contributes to a similarly increased mortality rate. “More work is needed to eliminate disparities in prostate cancer,” Dr. Thompson said.
Dr. Thompson has been critical of overreliance on the PSA test, which can lead to unnecessary treatment in healthy men. But he argues that it is an important diagnostic tool, and he and his colleagues designed the Prostate Cancer Risk Calculator, available on the UT Health Science Center website, so that doctors and patients can more easily incorporate PSA counts with other information that would affect a man’s risk. For current news from the UT Health Science Center, please visit our news
