Science Pathways
Regardless of which science class you begin in when you make your transition to Fair Lawn High School, multiple pathways within the science exist for you if you do well in your
classes and choose your courses wisely. These charts are provided to you to help you make good course selections. Pre-requites apply. Courses may not be offered every year. See
the Science Supervisor for more information.

Enriched Science (Middle School)
Qualification for enriched science classes is based on a
FLBOE approved rubric in which grades in math and science
courses as well as scores on standardized tests are
considered.
Students in grade 7 enriched science must also qualify for
and take pre-algebra or algebra I in grade 7. Students in
grade 8 enriched science must also qualify for and take
algebra I or algebra II in grade 8.
Students who do not qualify for grade 7 enriched science
have an opportunity to qualify for grade 8 enriched science.
Students who do not qualify for grade 8 enriched sciences
have an opportunity to qualify for honors science classes at
FLHS.
Special Needs
Please speak with your case manager about special education
options which may not be reflected on this chart.
Moving from CP to Hon or from Academic to CP at FLHS
Movement from the CP level science course to an Honors
level science for a student who excels in a course (highest
A’s) require an internal evaluation by the Science Supervisor
if it is not directly indicated in the pre-requisites. Students
may contact the Science Supervisor in January to discuss this
placement for the following school year.
Honors & AP Classes (FLHS)
Eligibility for honors and AP science classes at Fair Lawn
High School is based on a student’s grades in their previous
math and science courses. Students must meet the pre-
requisites in order to maintain eligibility for honors and AP
classes. Please see the guidance department for pre-
requisites.
Summer Science Courses
Summer enrichment courses in science require approval
by the Science Supervisor. Summer enrichment courses in
math require approval by the Math Supervisor.See your
guidance counselor regarding taking classes in the summer
for make-up credit.
NJ Graduation Requirements
You must pass three years of a lab science to graduate
High School. You must pass biology, chemistry or physics or
environmental science, and on other lab science. You must
also take a State Biology Exam the year you take Biology. All
FLHS science courses except for Forensic Science (a semester
course) meet this requirement. Four – five years (courses)
of science are recommended for students who are
considering majoring in science, math, or engineering fields.
**Horticulture has not been approved by the NCAA for scholarships.
