The Solution:

Page 5: Fahad zuberi Port Folio

Rajaswa Bhawan, National Tax Headquarters, New Delhi

The design uses the concepts of traditional Indian architecture, post modernism along with modern technological advances in structural design to arrive at a building that works well, provides the site the required grandeur and represents the heritage of the zone through exposed materials. These exposed materials with rough textures cool the building at the elemental scale and become the identity of the building.

The facade- developed solely on climatic basis makes use of brick Jali screen walls. This protects the South facing facade from the hot Delhi Sun and keeps the interiors cool. The front corridor, shaded by the brick Jalis serves to all the public access activities, reducing the public traffic in the office areas and providing easy circulation through the entrance lobby, visitor’s lounge and the media briefing hall.

The central courtyard : inspired from the Mandapa in South Indian architecture provides an open gathering space accessed through four sides : the service lane at the rear end of the site, entrances on the two sides and through the multipurpose hall from the V.I.P. Zone of the building.

The 42 m span segmented arches at the side entrances of this courtyard bear the load of the 3rd and the 4th floor sky bridges, breaking the superstructure's grid and making the structure more compact and earthquake resistant. These openings provide a clear passage for wind from the predominant N-E and N-W directions at the site – cooling the gathering space further – Solutions through monumentality.

The design – rooted in post modernist philosophies uses light as a dynamic element. The narrow strip of light from the South Sun marks every hour of the day in the entrance lobby. The lobby gets its grandeur from the G+6 atrium at the entrance : making use of a vertical cantilever system which creates a volume that acts as a buffer space and prevents the interiors from getting hot. The slit in this buffer provides just the right amount of Sun inside.

The site is landscaped with fly ash grass paver blocks which increase ground water percolation and reduce the glare - a major problem with hard landscaping in the region during summers.

The open seating developed around a small group of existing banyan and gular trees serves to the cafe. These existing trees, located on the south west side protect the complex from the hot summer sun.

The water bodies placed in the path of the predominant wind direction facilitate evaporative cooling. This air, cooled by the water bodies goes right through the entire building.

The service lane at the rear periphery serves the cafe and the central courtyard, from where the guests may be catered by their drivers without any repetitive movement on the site. It further serves the Kendriya Bhandar, printing press and the workshop located in the north west block of the complex.

The central courtyard has been paved with sandstone grass pavers which stand as the sign of the heritage of our past and compliment the exposed brick skin of the building.

An emergency and VIP parking has been provided in the front. Rest of the vehicles go straight down to the basement, hence reducing the vehicular movement on the site.

Tall ashoka trees shade the facade from scorching heat of the summer Sun and stand as representatives of the Indian flora of the region.

The Floor Plans are developed on the basis of the flow of work among various offices. On the ground, first and second floor, the blocks work as three independent blocks with totally different functions. The block in the front serves the purposes of public access while those at the back make use of the service lane at the rear portion of the site. The offices that require larger areas are spread all over the building mass on the third and fourth floor. Hence, there is zero need for vertical circulation in these offices. The size of the cut-outs in the building mass have been formulated using the distance for which natural light may be bounced in the interiors, making the bridges 14 m wide. The office for the ministers are housed on the 5th and 6th floor in the central region. Rest of the terrace serves as the site for PV Solar power producing units – which, in the given area, are enough to create this complex a zero energy building. Strategic grey water management plans, use of active chilled beams and site lighting solely through solar powered lamp posts further add to the green design.

Manila Grand Resorts Final Year Internship Design

•The guiding principle behind planning of the site: to minimise the cutting of contours to control the cost and to maximise the number of cottages that can be accommodated to eventually increase the revenue. •A single road creates a flexible and simple circulation and increases in elevation as it goes deeper into the site. •The road builds the required aura for the resort by giving a hint of what the visitor is about to experience, at the same time, the higher location of cottages provides them privacy. •Minimum cutting of the contours generates two major viewing decks at prominent locations, which then give birth to other activities like cafes with gazeebo sittings. •Simple pedestrian circulation via stairs maintains the scenic beauty of the hills and makes the site easily accessible.

•The unit plan is a simple arrangement of domestic activities which makes each cottage independent. •The verandah in the front serves as a sun deck as well as a leisurely spot for the patrons within the comfort of their private space.

Residence for Paraplegic Architect, Aligarh Third Year Design Studio

•The design emerges from the study of the needs of an Architect and that of a physically disabled person. •Ramps connecting different levels provide easy circulation and create a barrier free environment. •The upper floors are accessed through the lift in the lobby, thereby enabling the paraplegic person to access both the floors easily. •The rough and exposed exterior finishes cut the heat gain of the house, making it cooler during the hot summer months.

Residence for Mr. Shahzad Ahmad, Aligarh Independent Professional Work

•The challenge was to design a residence with flexible spaces on a very cramped site in the dense city centre of Aligarh. •The ground floor has flexible spaces that may be segregated at the semi circular arch to create a more private space in the interior. •The stairwell serves as a chimney and lets the warm air rise up, this warm air is expelled from the openings in the mumty above, inducing air movement and making the spaces cool. •Horizontal and vertical sun protection on the S-W side protects the facade from overheating. •The natural offsetting of the site has been used to fit the spaces that suit the constantly reducing area as we go deeper into the site, this results in efficient planning and ensures the use of every square inch of the site.

Motel at Mathura Road, Aligarh

•The design emerges from the use of abstract shape to convey the essence of the building’s dynamic and happening character. •The use of flowing and abstract planning guides the eye towards the restaurant in the centre. •The long narrow corridor connecting the stay units and party hall give privacy to the stay units and a grand approach to the party hall.

Anamorphic Art Skills

The following images are actually paintings on a two dimensional surface. The illusion of a vertical picture plane is created by distorting the sketch so as to appear as a three dimensional object when viewed from a specific point. The illusions are created by exploiting the solid angle conical vision of the human eye.

Anamorphic art is one of the rarest forms of art in the world today. Study of illusions in Art and Architecture – a hobby-giving a strong hold on the aspects of perspective and visualisation of a space from a human eye scale.
