2013 Curators’ Teaching Summit, Sponsored by CERTI• “Emerging Student Issues in the Classroom,” featuring the Curators’

Teaching Professors• Noon meetings, Sept. 16, Oct. 16 and Nov. 11 with lunch provided.

LEAD• For the first time ever Chem 2 (759 students) will offer a learning

center. It will meet in TJ Hall.• LEAD tutoring and learning centers were initiated by the second

week of the semester.• We launched our first-ever “On Line Learning Center” in Chem 1.• We are arranging a “LEAD Showcase” on Nov 12-13 for fellow UM

faculty/administrators.

Record Graduate Enrollment Growth:– Graduate enrollment rose from 1414 in FS

2007 to 1927 in FS2013 -- a 36.28% increase.

– The PhD student enrollment rose from 344 in FS2007 to 545 in FS2013 – a 58.43% increase.

– FS13 set a record for incoming new students 380 (a 50% increase over FS12)• Intensive English Program

– 123 students are currently enrolled– 49 full-time and 74 part-time– Countries represented include Brazil, China, Colombia, East Timor, Iran, Iraq,

Japan, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Thailand • Non degree Students

– International Affairs hosted a scavenger hunt for Brazil Scientific Mobility Program students and exchange students (non-degree). The international students were matched with American Students and sent out to explore the campus. Twenty-nine students participated.

Office of International Affairs

• Celebration of Nations tee-shirts are now available and can be purchased at the Missouri S&T bookstore for $10 – $12.

• Celebration of Nations is in full-swing! – Outreach programs have started in the local community – Organizing committee meeting regularly to ensure a great event– All campus and community members are invited to the 4th annual event on September 28th

– The program begins with a parade that will march from the campus to Rolla Street, 6th Street and Pine Street to the downtown bandshell area – International Idol try-outs are Sept 4th

Course Renumbering Initiative

Cross-walk tables have been successfully submitted by each department

Some departments requested course deletions in lieu of renumbering them

Default renumbering rules for prerequisite course numbers have been established; a few courses will use non-default rules as requested by departments


System software will convert active 3-digit numbers to 4-digit numbers, but departments must submit DC forms to remove/replace inactive 3-digit course numbers as well as change wording such as “300-level or higher” or “excluding x7x courses” within specific degree, emphasis area, or minor requirements


The Campus Curricula Committee moves for the approval of all the cross-walk tables, requested course deletions, and default prerequisite renumbering rules along with requested exceptions.

(EXCLUDING Miner Village and Gale Bullman).• Permits still being sold.

• A waiting list exists for various lots.• S&T numbers: 1,525 employees &

Lost Spaces?

• ONLY 152 spaces have been lost due to construction of Bertelsmeyer Hall.– 40 spaces should come back into use

with the completion of the building.• NO spaces lost because of

geothermal project!! – Actually, we have GAINED a few

spots!

• All meter heads were replaced over the last two years.– 50¢/hour (standard meters)– 60¢/30 minutes (premium, i.e. Parker)

Computer Security Training: IT (Karl Lutzen) suggested training at regular intervals, e.g., at faculty meetings,Detailed proposal will follow.

Faculty accomplishment system (FAS):CIO Greg Smith gave report on IT side of selection of new FAS software. Question: Is such a system valuable for you as faculty members? Consensus: No.

Learning management systems – Blackboard Replacement?Jeff Schramm + Angie Hammons reported on activities of committee, currently analyzing requirements and needs. Blackboard is expensive ($100k license + hosting and support costs),several competing products exist.
