Many cultural changes in the modernworld have been generated, directly or
indirectly, by the dominance andexpansion of Western societies, such
as clothes
When a group or a society is in contactwith a more powerful society, the weaker

Discovery and invention have beenprimary sources of culture change. Yet onlywhen a society accepts an invention ordiscovery and uses it regularly can culturechange.
Cultures are always changing.Because cultures consist of learned
patterns of behavior and belief, cultural traits can be unlearned and
learned a new as human needschange.

There are three general sources ofinfluence or pressure that are responsiblefor both change and resistance to it:
1. Diffusion

Diffusion is the process bywhich cultural elements are
borrowed from another societyand incorporated into the culture
of the recipient group.
Diffusion is a selective not automaticprocess. A society accepting a foreigncultural trait is likely to adapt it in away that effectively use it with the
society’s own traditions.

Diffusion is the movement of thingsand ideas from one culture to another.
When diffusion occurs, the form of a traitmay move from one society to another but
not its original cultural meaning.
For instance, when McDonald's firstbrought their American style hamburgersto Moscow and Beijing, they were accepted
as luxury foods for special occasionsbecause they were relatively expensive and
exotic.

Revolution is the mostdramatic and perhaps rapidway a culture can change.
Usually revolutions indicate a violentreplacement of a society’s rulers.Usually revolutions indicate a violentreplacement of a society’s rulers.
Transculturation is whathappens to an individual when he or
she moves to another society andadopts its culture. Immigrants whosuccessfully learn the language and
accept as their own the culturalpatterns of their adopted country have
transculturated.
