The motto Discoveries in Education was adopted in 1969. These words, together with a shield depicting a Spanish barque under sail, represented VIU’s logo when the institution was known as Malaspina College. The use of the original motto and the Spanish vessel in the Coat of Arms provides a permanent link in the official grant to a symbol and logotype which served Malaspina well during a key period of its development. The motto also provides a link with one of Captain Alejandro Malaspina’s ships—the Descubierta—which means Discovery.

Vancouver Island University Convocation Symbols

PaddleThe paddle that is on display during VIU’s convocation ceremonies was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo when he was installed as Chancellor. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/ Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities. A paddle was presented to each of the four regional campuses with the wish that it be used at special occasions, like a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys.

At the convocation ceremonies, the paddle is carried in and out of the theatre by the President.

MaceDuring the Middle Ages, the metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and is carried before ecclesiastical dignitaries and in university ceremonies such as this.

The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems. At the convocation ceremonies, the mace is carried by a retiring member of academic faculty or administration to honour his or her contribution to Vancouver Island University.

For a complete list of past mace-bearers, please visit www.viu.ca/convocation/macebearers.asp

Mace-BearerThis June, the honour of carrying the mace has been awarded to Fred MacDonald, Dean of the Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology.

Donors support VIU studentsEvery year, our students benefit from the support of many generous individuals, groups and businesses who have created awards that encourage learning and reward effort. We are proud of our students and their achievements, and appreciate the material support that so many people provide. To find out how you can contribute to student success, please contact the Vancouver Island University Foundation at tel: (250) 740-6212; e-mail: [email protected], or visit our website: www.viu.ca/foundation.

Sturgeon close to heart of seven-year-old donor

Seven-year-old Alden Thom is VIU’s youngest donor having given $35 to the University’s sturgeon program in 2010. He collected the money at his fifth birthday party in lieu of presents as he’s loved sturgeon ever since his parents can remember. In February 2013, he was back at VIU watching the sturgeon being moved into their new home – VIU’s state-of-the-art research facility, the International Centre for Sturgeon Studies (ICSS). At the event Thom, his older brother Elwyn and grandparents Bernice and Stan Fediuk donated $100 more to the sturgeon program.

Don Tillapaugh, Director of the ICSS, thanked Alden and his family for the donation to help VIU’s sturgeon, saying contributions of any size are significant. “We’re focused on connecting to our community. After all, much of the work and research we do in the ICSS is about creating economic opportunities within our community. Alden’s story is unique as he is, truly, our youngest donor, and it’s great to know that our work is inspiring to people of all ages.”

Thrifty’s Double Up program helps faculty ‘pay it forward’

In 2000, Marni Stanley, a professor in VIU’s English department, and Kathryn Barnwell, a retired VIU English professor, decided to make original jewelry and sell it to raise funds to support an annual scholarship. Both had received scholarships as students and couldn’t have completed their degrees without that support. Establishing the fund, which they called the Kathryn Barnwell Scholarship Fund, was a way of paying it forward.

“We were surprised at the response at our first sale,” says Stanley. “The VIU community bought jewelry for themselves, members of their family, even their co-workers. Even better, they’ve continued to support us every year. I guess it’s more fun for everyone

to raise funds for student scholarships in a way that’s celebratory.”

The scholarship fund now has more than $50,000 in a charitable trust and every year one deserving student who is returning to VIU’s women’s studies program is awarded $1,000 from the interest earned. Barnwell and Stanley appreciate the community supporters who have enabled the fund to grow including those who buy their jewelry,

The Mariners also took part in the Thrifty’s Double-Up program, raising funds for VIU’S Athletics programs. From (L) to (R) student athletes Sandra Veikle, who plays volleyball and is in the bachelor of arts program, and Harrison Stupich, who plays basketball and is also in the bachelor of arts program.

“It makes it more fun for everyone, and certainly for us, to raise funds for student scholarships in a way that is celebratory.”

– Marni Stanley, VIU English Professor

make annual donations and also business sponsors such as Thrifty Foods which have supported the fund through their annual Double-Up program. For more information contact David Forrester, Advancement Manager at [email protected].

BC Government funds new skills training equipment

In December 2012, John Yap, then Minister of Advanced Education, Innovation & Technology, announced the government of BC would be investing more than $1.46 million in new skills training equipment at VIU as part of the BC Jobs Plan. Some of the new equipment, including a forklift and equipment for the welding and electrical programs, arrived on campus in the spring. Students immediately started putting it to the test, taking the skills they’d learned in the classroom and putting them into practice using the new equipment.

“We’re proud of our tradition of excellence in trades and vocational

training, and the vital role it plays in preparing skilled workers to support BC’s economy,” said VIU President Ralph Nilson. “This funding will go a long way towards providing the most up-to-date equipment for our students and instructors, and will help to leverage additional support from our industry partners."

Gift left in will enhances life of Education student

When Annie May Beck arrived in Canada in 1910 from Whitehaven, England, at the age of two, she couldn’t have known her future actions would inspire and encourage VIU students. After spending her childhood in Nanaimo, Beck went on to pursue a career as a teacher in the Nanaimo School District,

where she taught and inspired students for 43 years. Even though she passed away on March 9, 1999, her passion for education lives on as Jessica Vatcher, who graduated from VIU’s bachelor of education program on June 4, can attest. In her will, Beck left funds to VIU to support a scholarship for education students—the Annie May Beck Education Award—and Vatcher was one of the recipients of this award in 2012.

“I was so excited to receive this award,” says Vatcher, “as it really made such a difference in my educational experience. I was able to cut my working hours down to one day a week and immerse myself in my studies. It really enriched my experience at VIU.”

VIU’s Advancement & Alumni office manages more than 1,300 annual scholarships, awards and bursaries all with the goal of supporting students like Vatcher to get the most out of their educational experience.

As of October 2012, VIU had:

· 1,631 trades students

· 32 trades programs

Get involved. Support VIU’s students by establishing a scholarship, award or bursary program. Contact Susie Caswell, Advancement Manager at [email protected] or 250.740.6216.

Through its campuses and centres, more than 2,000 employees and tens of thousands of students and alumni, Vancouver Island University is a major economic engine operating in the communities of Vancouver Island and BC's Sunshine Coast.

The graduates of VIU’s more than 200 degree, diploma and certificate programs are shaping our world in extraordinary ways. Our graduates also provide the region with a talent pool of highly trained individuals who are ready to take on the demands of a new economy.

In addition to providing an annual injection of nearly $200 million dollars into the regional economy, VIU is adding value to communities in the areas of cultural enrichment, economic development, environmental sustainability, research opportunities and social development.

Cultural Enrichment: VIU adds a rich and diverse layer of cultural access to the citizens of our communities through the many cultural events hosted on each of VIU’s campuses and centres. VIU supports the development of arts and culture on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast through poetry readings, film festivals, Aboriginal feasts, concerts and other cultural initiatives. In addition to hosting more than 1,600 international students from over 70 countries, VIU is proud to have one of the highest Aboriginal post-secondary participation rates in BC. We value our relationships with our Aboriginal communities and will continue to engage in initiatives that strengthen Aboriginal advancement.

Economic Development: As well as providing local economies with a skilled pool of workers, VIU makes a substantial investment in the local marketplace through operational spending and the employment of over 2,000 people. VIU is also involved in stimulating local economic development, through initiatives run out of our state-of-the-art facilities such as the Deep Bay Marine Field Station,

where faculty and staff are working with local communities to revitalize the shellfish farming industry in coastal and First Nations communities.

Environmental Sustainability: VIU is committed to exploring new ways of teaching and operating that will ensure the protection of our environment and our communities. Some environmental stewardship initiatives include the "bike to work week" promotion in May, the on-campus bottled water ban along with water filling stations for reusable bottles, and an on-going energy management program.

Research Opportunities: VIU averages four postgraduate scholarships for fourth year students per year. Worth approximately $19,000 each, these scholarships serve as a financial boost to help students pursuing our Master’s degrees. As well, VIU’s increased focus on undergraduate and applied research is being recognized by national funding agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Social Development: Through programs and projects, and in partnership with community stakeholders including First Nations, VIU works to enhance the quality of life on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, engaging in activity that brings educational opportunities to everyone in the community. Continuing Studies and ElderCollege programs run throughout the year and in the summer hundreds of children take part in programs like GrandKids University, Mariners Sports camps and week-long science camps. Many faculty are also actively engaged in community based research, focused on projects relevant to our region and communities.

At VIU, we believe education is a community asset and we are committed to strengthening our economy and positioning our region for prosperity.
