F rom the olden days of the Imperial College of

Tropical Agriculture (ICTA) in 1923, a re-

engineered agricultural learning institution, The

Faculty of Food and Agriculture (FFA) has

evolved. The Faculty, which serves all UWI

member countries has always embraced three

priority mandates: undergraduate and post

graduate training, research and outreach.

Today, the Faculty has recognized the need

to expand its disciplinary base to address

contemporary needs. In this vein, its on-going

development effort has borne fruit through critical

human resources training as well as its newly

introduced Programmes in Human Ecology,

Agribusiness Management, Geo-spatial and

Human Sciences, Environmental and Natural

Resource Management for sustainable

development and livelihood, and other cutting

edge programmes.

It is the mission of the FFA to not only prepare

graduates for work, but for life!

Who will lead the production of safe, healthy, nutritious food?

Graduates of FFA can!

The Facts

The planet’s ability to provide for sustained existence is challenged by…

Unprecedented human population size and unchecked growth rate,

Sustained changes in the environment including the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the

atmosphere and oceans, driving global warming and the disruption of global weather patterns

which severely impact on food production,

Low levels of technology use in Caribbean agriculture in a predominantly small farm setting

coupled with ageing farmers,

Growth in the obese population with increasing proportion of overall population suffering from

lifestyle diseases,

High food import bill throughout the Caribbean, dominated by Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Jamaica

and the Bahamas,

The region’s vulnerability to natural hazards and their after effects,

Dependence on service and in some cases, energy industries which are prone to cyclical trends and

economic shocks.

In spite of these daunting challenges, the Caribbean community is committed to

sustained economic development and social and cultural transformation of the region.

FFA Graduates are Leaders

The UWI St. Augustine is known for its excellent research and teaching in Agriculture. The new Faculty

of Food and Agriculture is continuing with this tradition. Through research and publication, the Faculty

contributes to the advancement of knowledge while solving scientific and technical problems directly

relevant to the region. The research of the Faculty is not only published in internationally recognized

journals but also through proceedings of International and regional conferences. In more recent times, its

books are making very important contributions to the advancement of tropical agriculture and

sustainable environment.

Graduates of the FFA have excelled not only in agriculture but in many other areas. Some notable

lawyers and doctors have started their careers with us and eventually branched off. Many have become

lecturers and professors at the UWI and other universities. Even some local politicians and a previous

Minister of Agriculture were once students! Many can be found in the United Nations, especially as

country representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organisation. You too can be a leader…start with us

and let your career evolve...who knows; be a distinguished leader in your field, maybe a Prime Minister

could come out of our Faculty! It could be you!
