1. Milestones (Full Time Equivalent)

• Six months– Satisfactory completion of the Core Component of

the Structured Program (CCSP, including Research Proposal) gives you probationary enrolment

• Twelve months– Satisfactory completion of the Major Review

confirms your enrolment• Annual review

– Satisfactory completion maintains your status• Pre-submission review (approx. 36 months)

– Satisfactory completion confirms the standard of your work for submission

2. CCSPAustralian Code for the Responsible Conduct

of Research

• Online training in aspects of the Code is a requirement of probationary enrolment

• Three worksheets:– Management of Research Data and Primary Materials– Publication and Dissemination of Research Findings– Authorship

• Include your certificates in your CCSP submission

2. CCSP: Ethics clearance

• Ethics Approval: Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), includes a ‘low risk’ sub-committee

• Interviews and similar requires low risk clearance in advance

• Ability to publish may be affected if clearance does not occur

• Applications considered on rolling basis so process is fairly quick

2. CCSPHow to prepare for CCSP?

• Two main questions:– Is this a viable, grounded and valuable project that can be

completed in a timely fashion?– Does the applicant have the skills, knowledge and resources

to complete it in timely fashion?

• Importance of routine• Establish solid, professional relationship with

supervisor & PGC• Know your field in order to make a contribution to it• Plan your research • Schedule your research time• Look at other theses• Meet your research librarian• Draft early

3. Major Review of Progress:Preparing for the Major Review

• Two main questions:– Is this taking shape as a well conceived project that can

be completed in a timely fashion?– Has the applicant acquired the skills, knowledge and

resources to complete it in timely fashion?

• Keep the momentum from your CCSP• To begin with, stick closely to your research

proposal• Start writing

3. Major Review of Progress: Writing Techniques

5. Final Stages:Pre-submission review

• The annual review that occurs after 36 months F/T equivalent is expected to be the pre-submission review

• This may require additional work depending on what your department usually expects of PG students at annual review, but the minimum for pre-submission review is:– A summary of the thesis, including a summary of

chapters, in total approximately 2,000 words, for consideration by your review panel (sometimes involving presentation)

– Evidence that you have communicated your research to the broader discipline in some format, e.g. seminar, presentation, colloquium, publication…
