Dear Student
Welcome to the North-West University. It is a great privilege for me to also welcome you at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Thank you for choosing a fi eld within health sciences for your future career.
It is certainly one of the most enriching tasks to make a contribution to the health of fellow human beings. Our Faculty’s mission is to properly equip you in your future studies, so that you will be able to actively make a difference in people’s lives.

Assessment and management of minor ailments
• Referral to other healthcarefacilities and NWU services
• Emergency care (physicalcare given to patients)
• Emergency management (the logisticsaround the available services and thecoordination between emergencyservices and the healthcare centres)
• Patients on chronic treatmentat a government facility can gettheir chronic medicine deliveredto the NWU healthcare centres(terms and conditions apply)
• Minor surgical procedures such asapplying stitches, tending to cuts,or the insertion and removal ofImplanon (contraceptive implant)
• Dispensing of medication prescribed bycampus healthcare professionals (noover-the-counter medication sales)
• A range of affordable quick tests suchas pregnancy, HIV, blood sugar, etc.
• Daily laboratory service (blood andother specimens may be taken bya nurse during a consultation)
• Reproductive healthcare services(for example contraceptives)
• Health education such as one-on-one talks, radio talks and educationwith regard to tuberculosis
