FACULTY GUIDE to CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Exploring majors and careers When students have career direction and purpose that’s when we, as faculty and staff, experience a positive difference in their engagement, motivation, and persistence. As a certified career development professional, the Director works with students in one-on-one appointments to inspire awareness and clarify career goals. Students focus on articulating their skills, preferences, values, and interests and use reliable and valid career information to identify a major and career that are satisfying and meaningful.

Many students love what they are currently studying but still experience a lack of confidence and a full understanding of their career options. We want to partner with faculty in all academic areas to help students connect with a wide range of opportunities that fit them best – everything from graduate/professional school to full-time employment. Please urge your students to contact our office to schedule appointments, utilize the drop-in hours, or attend our weekly workshops.

Connecting your classroom with Career Development One of the best ways to introduce students to career development is through the classroom. Incorporating our topics into your classes can be mutually beneficial - here are some of the ways we can partner this year:

Presentations Presentations are customized for each class to ensure the material is meeting the desired learning outcomes established for the course. Students will have the opportunity to practice interactive career decision making activities (geared toward freshmen and sophomores) and refine their career planning in preparation for internships, graduate school or full-time job search (geared toward juniors and seniors).

Here are some of the topics (tailored for each major or student group): • Exploring career possibilities • Identifying your skill set and developing a dynamic career plan • Tailoring your resume, cover letter and standing out in the online application process • Interviewing practice and tips • Utilizing social media in your job search • Targeting graduate & professional schools/employers that match your career interests and goals

Specialized presentations/workshops can be developed according to the needs of the class.

Guest Speakers We can also connect you with a wide range of employers or graduate school speakers who are interested in presenting to your classes or student groups.

Resume reviews We provide comprehensive resume writing support for students just beginning to write a resume, by offering workshops and peer reviews, in addition to providing tailored feedback to seasoned students during one-on-one resume review appointments.

Interview coaching and mock interviews Appointments for interview coaching and mock interviews are excellent ways for students to enhance their interviewing skills. We suggest incorporating mock interviews as a course requirement for senior seminar classes. For more information, email [email protected]. Job search assistance & graduate school prep We are happy to assist students and alumni with any job search/graduate school related issues including: • Writing resumes and cover letters • Preparing for interviews • Writing personal statements • Negotiating salary • Completing online applications • Networking

• Applying to graduate & professional schools • Utilizing social media (LinkedIn) • Accessing global job search resources • Researching & targeting employers

Promoting opportunities to students & alumni Handshake is our online source where students can access multiple resources, including job and internship postings, employer information and registration for career events, and the comprehensive international resource, Going Global. We are partnering with Alumni Relations and Institutional Research to build a dynamic Alumni Career Network through LinkedIn. If you are contacted by employers, graduate school recruiters or alumni regarding opportunities for our students and alumni, please share that information with our office so we can assist with promotions.

Upcoming events Please refer to the schedule of weekly Events & Workshops hosted by Internships & Career Development.
