Residents must demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and a sensitivity to a diverse patient population.

Introduces self Speaks to patient as an equal, maintains
eye-contact Avoids medical-ese Responds positively to faculty during
teaching Respects dignity of patient (knocks on door,
drapes as appropriate, respects privacy)
Comforts patient, makes empathetic comments
Slow to interrupt Uses appropriate pain relief Avoids derogatory comments of patient Touches patient
Admits errors Admits omissions (“I did not ask that) Follows through on commitments Is accurate in time commitments and calls
when detained Answers pages promptly Informs others when unavailable and
secures coverage Does not withhold information from patients
Involved in the community Graciously cares for the socially
disadvantaged Attentive to needs of their own family
Explains what will happen to patients Family involved in decisions Does not talk about patients in open areas Does not shout or talk slowly to non-english
speaking persons Avoids sexist and racial jokes Asks for help when needed Does not inflate billing Calls elderly by last name
