Faculty Development Program

May 22nd toMay 24th

2018

Professor Gita Chaudhuri has been a Visiting Faculty member at IIM Udaipur for the last five years where she teaches two courses on Written Analysis and Communication. She had earlier taught the same course at IIM Ahmedabad, the cradle of WAC in India, for more than two decades. Professor Gita Chaudhuri is a Ph. D in English Literature from Gujarat University where she received the Professor F.C. Davar Gold Medal.

Besides her interest in the teaching of WAC she has an abiding interest in the translation of literary works. She received the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize for 2017 for her Satyer Anweshan, a translation of M. K. Gandhi's Satya na Prayogo (My Experiments with Truth). Her translation of the first Dalit autobiography Purna Satya by Keshar Shivam into English, The Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth, was published by Samya Publication and is used as a text in Germany.

Professor Danesh Gojer

The Indian Institute of Management Udaipur is pleased to offer WAC and Case Study Teaching, a comprehensive faculty development program that has been specifically designed to train participants on how to most effectively teach a Written Analysis and Communication (WAC) course.

Program Overview

Faculty

IIMU opened in 2011. It is located on a new 300+ acre campus in Balicha, Udaipur and has over 500 students in its two year PGP MBA program, its 15 month PGPX Dual Degree Program in Global Supply Chain Management, and its doctoral level FPM program.

In the NIRF rankings, IIMU is 13th in the Management category and 1st among new IIMs.

IIMU gives equal emphasis to providing the highest quality teaching to deliver our programs as well as supporting faculty to produce research of the highest global standard with articles published in leading international journals.

IIM Udaipur

Pioneered at the Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad) WAC is widely regarded as being one of the most challenging and compelling components of an MBA program. It is also touted by former students as being the course they most vividly remember and more importantly as the course they most often use after graduation.

This is predominantly because the program teaches and trains students how to write and think like managers. Hence, the structure and focus of WAC revolves around the writing of managerial decision reports. These reports are in turn based upon a management case study that is dissected and discussed in the classroom.

Student learnings and benefits come from not only the open classroom discussions and debates but also from the detailed individual and collective feedback they receive on their written submissions. In addition, students also learn the skills needed to effectively structure and present as well as justify and defend their written arguments/recommendations against the backdrop of a situation or managerial challenge where there is no one “right” answer.

What is WAC?

This program has been specifically designed for faculty and those involved in the teaching of WAC. However, this program can also equally benefit faculty involved with any other communication/managerial courses that also utilize the case study method of teaching.

For Whom

This in turn requires instructors to maintain a fine balance of questioning, listening, guiding and responding to students as they dictate the classroom discussion whilst sporadically reverting to mini-lectures to clarify key points, issues and/or theories.

In addition, the course necessitates that students be given in depth and detailed feedback on their written submissions ranging from the macro (e.g. errors and flaws in reasoning and rationale) to the micro (e.g. grammatical, syntax and stylistic errors).

The WAC and Case Study Teaching program has been specifically designed to enable participants to gain a thorough and all-embracing understanding of how to best teach a WAC course ranging from its components to its challenges. In short it will give you all the tips, theories, techniques etc. required to be able to “hit the ground running” and be able to immediately begin teaching WAC. As an equal benefit, this program will also train you on not only how to thoroughly dissect and discuss a case study but also how to be able to draw out its key learning outcomes and deliverables.

Program Objectives and Highlights

By the end of this program participants will have learnt how to:

Effectively prepare and present managerial decision reports

Effectively evaluate and grade managerial decision reports

Thoroughly dissect and deconstruct a case study to formulate key learning objectives and classroom sessions

Orchestrate and facilitate case study discussions and debates

Implement a methodical, systematic and precise approach to problem solving and decision making

Produce future managers with strong decision making and communication skills

Course Deliverables

The teaching of WAC itself is an interesting, challenging, energizing and enjoyable experience primarily because the course design and content calls for a “discussion leadership” style of teaching rather than the traditional pure lecture method.

After graduating from IIMA, I joined Madura Coats Ltd., a

British MNC, and worked in five countries starting in

Finance and moving to general management. At IIMA,

Written Analysis and Communication (WAC) was a course

hated by many students because of its rigour and rigid

timelines, but it imparted this unique skill of defining the

correct problem, analysing it for appropriate solutions and

above all presenting the solution in a way that ensures it is

accepted for implementation. This was the most important

skill I consistently used throughout my career across

functions as well as geographies.

WAC was one of the most useful subjects that I learnt at

IIMA. It has immensely helped me improve my problem

solving abilities. The lessons come in handy whenever I

have to shoulder institution building and administrative

responsibilities as an academic or handle strategic

assignments as a consultant or senior executive.
