Swami Vivekananda envisioned that Belur Math would be acentre of great harmony and synthesis, not only of all religiousbeliefs and traditions, but also of arts and sciences and thevarious branches of knowledge, both secular and spiritual. Itwould be the centre of great spiritual and cultural awakening. He also envisioned that Belur Math would develop into a

“great University”, by which he perhaps meant that thecentres of Ramakrishna Math and RamakrishnaMission under Belur Math Headquarters would becentres of wisdom radiating the light of secular and

spiritual knowledge for the all-round developmentof humankind—physical, mental, moral, intellectual and spiritual. Just a couple of daysbefore his mahasamadhi (passing away) on 4 July1902, he prophesied as follows:

The Vision

“The spiritual impact that has come to Belur [Math] will last fifteen hundredyears, and it will be a great University. Do not think I imagine it; I see it.”On another occasion, he wrote:

“The aim is to gradually develop this Math into an all-round University.”

Swami Vivekananda's educational vision which the Ramakrishna Mission institutionsare striving to actualize may be put briefly in his own words: “What we want are Westernscience coupled with Vedanta, Brahmacharya as the guiding motto, and also Shraddhaand faith in one's own self.” Swamiji emphasized man making, character buildingeducation by combining the best elements of the East and the West.

About the UniversityRamakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (formerly known as ‘RamakrishnaMission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute’) was established under theaegis of Ramakrishna Mission, having been declared by the Ministry of Human ResourceDevelopment (MHRD), Government of India, to be a ‘deemed-to-be university’ underSection 3 of University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956 by a Notification dated 5January 2005. Later, by another Notification of the UGC, the university was renamedas ‘Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University’. The University was formallyinaugurated at Belur Math on 4 July 2005, the sacred day of Swami Vivekananda’smahasamadhi.Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (RKMVU) is a University with adifference. It is headquartered at Belur Math and mainly operates through its various‘off-campus’ Faculty Centres located at the various branch-centres of RamakrishnaMission in India and has as its ‘thrust areas’ certain unconventional areas. These ‘thrust

areas’ are also ‘gap areas’ in the sense thatthey scarcely receive any attention in theconventional Universities in India. One suchthrust area is ‘Integrated Rural Developmentand Tribal Development’, under which thepresent Faculty Centre at RamakrishnaMission Ashrama, Narendrapur, WestBengal, has been started. One more centre devoted to this area is Ramakrishna MissionAshrama, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Some of the other thrust areas chosen are: DisabilityManagement and Special Education, Indian Cultural and Spiritual Heritage, and DisasterManagement.

Academic HighlightsThe programme is organised in five distinct but mutually supportive learningsegments :Interactive Classroom Sessions (ICS) : ICS involves lectures, special lectures by subjectexperts, seminars, debates, group discussions, panel discussions, extempore deliberation, class teachings, mini projects, presentation of semester paper, field and laboratory basedpractical, visit to farmers' field and different institutions etc. In all the four semestersstudents are to be given exposure to about 28 compulsory and optional modules/coursescomprised of extensive information related to different aspects of rural developmentand management.Rural Living and Learning Experience (RLLE) : The most essential component of thecourse is to bridge the gap between academics and application by generating willingnessamong the students for rural living and to develop the inquisitive process of learningleading to action through participation in villagers’ day-to-day activities. The interactiveinvolvement with the villagers in different institutional contexts would expand theinnovative qualities of the students. RLLE is, therefore, an indispensable pedagogicalcomponent of the IRDM course.Learning through Organizational Attachment (LOA) : LOA provides students withthe knowledge of practical work and learning opportunity. It attempts to prepare thestudents with more effective techniques, better decision-making abilities, instill in themthe vigour of approach in productivity, excellence and innovation. It exposes the studentsto real life situations and provides them with opportunities to apply the concepts learntin the classroom in actual situations. It also helps them to develop innovative target-oriented solutions to the major issues faced by theorganization and address strategy formulation aswell as operational and functional problems. Theduration of LOA would be of 2 weeks and 8 weeksduring 2nd and 4th semester respectively. On the Job Training : With the same objectives ofLOA, there may be an optional ‘On the job trainingprogramme’ for 3 months after the completion of thefinal examination including viva-voce at the end ofthe 4th semester. A token stipend may be given to the students undergoing this optionaltraining programme (Subjects to the approval).Dissertation work and scientific research paper : Each student will give a preliminaryseminar after the 2nd semester on proposed plan of dissertation work and will work onthat topic throughout the 3rd and 4th semesters. Students have to give another seminarat the end 4th semester on his/her dissertation work.Students have to submit a scientific paper for publishing in a peer reviewed journalalong with their dissertation report.Associative academic activities in all the semesters : ● Seminars, talks, debates, groupdiscussions, panel discussion, quizzes, class teaching exercises, extempore presentations, village meetings etc. ● Report writing and presentation. ● Unit tests, final examinationsat the end of each semester, short field visits and institutional visits. ● Organising stallsand demonstrations in kishan mela. ● Comprehensive test during 4th semester. Nograde will be given but students have to qualify in that test.
