Some Tips… A normal course load is 15 credits – students should not overload in their first semester – but they should ALWAYS START with 15 credits. Remind them that they cannot get from one side of Grounds to the other in the 10 minute break between classes. They should NOT repeat any course for which they have earned credit via AP, IB or dual enrollment – students cannot earn credit for the same class twice. Four years/8 semesters is the maximum to complete a degree.

22

Page 23: Faculty Advisor Orientation 2014 - college.as.virginia.edu · Faculty Advisor Orientation 2014 Prepared by Rachel Most, Fall 2014 1 . College Requirements • Competency Requirements

And . . . Remember USEMs and COLAs. Students should look for something new that they have never studied before and something that feels “safe”. All classes should be taken for a grade. College students must complete the degree in 8 semesters (NOT including summer sessions, January Term or part-time fall/spring semesters).

What is Academic Good Standing? To be in Good Standing a student must . . . • Pass 12 credits; • Earn a minimum 1.800 GPA; • Earn no more than one grade

24

Page 25: Faculty Advisor Orientation 2014 - college.as.virginia.edu · Faculty Advisor Orientation 2014 Prepared by Rachel Most, Fall 2014 1 . College Requirements • Competency Requirements

Students must meet each of the above 3 criteria to be in Good Academic Standing. Failure to meet any one of these criteria results in being placed on academic probation. Consecutive semesters (fall to spring or spring to fall) on probation lead to academic suspension for a full year.

ULink is the University Peer Advising Link. The Peer Advising Link serves as a peer advising program for all undergraduate students at the University of Virginia. The program follows the University Board of Visitors’ Strategic Vision to strengthen advising at the University. For those organizations and student groups that already have advising programs, ULink may serve as an optional supplement, or compliment, for the student. The program does not nullify or overshadow these programs, and will operate with developed partnerships with such programs.
