Didactical approach: Problem Based Learning

On a weekly basis, in 3-hour meetings, students work in small groups of 10, guided by the course instructor or a professional tutor. In such small tutorial groups students work efficiently on projects assigned to them and discuss problems they are confronted with. These real-life or academic problems form the basis of learning. During an initial discussion students activate any prior knowledge and are expected to assess possible theoretical explanations for the problem based on their personal experience and knowledge. At the end of the meeting, questions that gui-de learning are formulated based on their tentative expla-nations (i.e., learning objectives). Students are encouraged to formulate learning objectives themselves rather than to follow objectives set by a course instructor. Later during self-study, students seek answers to these questions in the library (both from handbooks and articles). Three or four days later, a subsequent small-group meeting takes place during which students report their findings and discuss, for example, controversial theories and differences between research results related to these real-life or academic problems.

Content of the curriculum

EUC divides the academic year into 4 quads of 8 weeks each. In each quad students take 3 courses of 5 ECTS each. Most courses have a multidisciplinary nature, while others are more focused on a particular discipline or a skill.

Courses at 100-level are part of the Academic Core. During this Academic core, students take courses in all the disciplines of the Erasmus University. Students are able to experience all these disciplines, learn where their talents lie, and determine their preferences for deepening their academic focus. Most students will complete this Acade-mic Core in their first year of studies at EUC. In year 2 and 3, students choose a major. The majors are offered by one of the 4 departments: Economics & Business, Humani-ties, Life Sciences and Social & Behavioural Sciences. For a full list with available majors within these departments, please check the course list (separate document). In their last semester, students complete the LAS programme with an individual Capstone, in which they combine their knowledge, imagination and skills by means of a research project, an internship and/or a thesis.

Academic Core CoursesThe aim of the academic core courses is to provide stu-dents with a historical overview of the development of science and the origin of life, knowledge about the foun-dations of modern society, the philosophy of science and society, and basic knowledge about the models, concepts, and theories of the four departments.

Departments and majors Each of the four department offers several majors (or specializations) that prepare students for further academic focus, and which connect to master programmes for after their bachelor.
