From the Rector Dear St. Andrew’s Family, I served for several years as Chaplain at a large nursing home in Dallas. It was a wonderful and enlightening experience for me. While I was there, I was given this beautiful prayer by one of the hospice nurses. I have treasured it and think it gives each of us a beautiful message to ponder as we enter the glorious season of Advent. Please pray it individually and I would like us to pray it collectively when we gather for our Wednesday evening services during Advent. Its words address many of the Gospel lessons from Matthew’s chapter 25, that we’ve heard in recent weeks. Father, I am Your bread. Break me up and pass me around to the poor and needy of this world. I am Your towel. Dampen me with tears and with me wash the feet of people who are weary with walking and with working. I am Your light. Take me out to where the darkness is thick, there to shine and let Christ shine. I am Your pen. Write with me whatever word You wish, and placard the word where the least and the lost of the world will see it and read it and be helped by it. I am Your salt. Sprinkle me on all the things that You want for people, so that my faith and love and hope will flavor their experiences. I am Your water. Pour me into people who thirst for You but do not even know that it is You for whom they thirst. Pour into them the trust that You have helped me to place in You. Pour into them the inward witness that is in me. Pour into them the promise that soon the summer drought will pass and refreshing rivers of water will gush down over them. I am Yours, Lord God. Use me up in what You will, when You will, where You will, for whom You will, even if it means that I am given responsibilities that are considerable and costly! Amen. I wish each of you a most blessed and joyous Advent and Christmas! And may your New Year be filled with the answers to your deepest prayers and an abundance of God’s grace.

Your sister in Christ, Melinda+

About Being an Episcopalian

Advent is the first season of the church’s liturgical year, beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and running until the first Eucharist of Christmas. Advent is a season of preparation for remembering Christ’s incarnation at Christmas and for the fulfillment of His promise to return in power and great glory. This accounts for the emphasis in many of this season’s biblical readings on the end of time and on God’s promises for the people of Israel and the church of Christ. Advent has received renewed emphasis in recent years as the church sought ways to counter the secularization of Christmas as a cultural holiday characterized by conspicuous consumption. The liturgical colors are either purple or blue.

Little Words of Wisdom

November 2008 Seminarian Report to the Parish

In my September newsletter article, I shared some insights into the move to seminary and how things were beginning to play out as the fall semester got underway. It is hard for me to believe as I am writing this (just before Thanksgiving), that the semester is almost over and I am working on the last term papers and getting ready for final exams. Keeping busy has certainly made the time go quickly!

I was fortunate enough to make a brief trip home to Arizona in October to attend Diocesan Convention during our fall break. It was great to be home even for so short a time, and have a chance to visit with some of you at St. Andrew’s before returning to Austin. It also provided opportunities to meet with the Commission on Ministry and the Standing Committee to start laying out details of the next steps in the process leading toward ordination. There are many milestones to be reached yet, but it is encouraging to see some of them approaching now. In looking back, I have been in this phase of the process, as a Postulant, for three-and-a-half years, and it really started over three years before that with initial application. The next phase, God willing, will be admission to Candidacy, completion of the year here, and undertaking Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) after returning to Arizona next summer in preparation for ordination as a Transitional Deacon. That won’t be the end of my studies or academic requirements, however, as I must also take a General Ordination Exam (GOE) and embark on any additional course work prescribed by the Commission on Ministry.

Some of you have asked about who goes to seminary these days and in what programs they are enrolled. While I can’t tell you about the other Episcopal seminaries, the demographics at SSW should be relatively typical. We currently have 80 full-time students, 36 of which are in the traditional 3-year Masters in Divinity (M-Div) program. Of the M-Div students, 23 are women and 13 are men, with an average age of 48. There are also 31 students in Masters programs in Pastoral Ministry, Religion, Counseling, Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care, as well as part-time students in a variety of certificate programs in Youth Ministry and Christian Education – and of course those of us in the Diploma in Theological Studies and Diploma in Anglican Studies programs. Overall, there are over twice as many women as men enrolled in the various programs, and about two-thirds of the students are married. When you put it all together, it is a dedicated community of people who work very well together and are extremely supportive of one another, regardless of individual programs or curricula.

After finals will be Christmas Break. Barbara will be coming here so that we can spend it in the Austin area with family and friends before it is time for studies to resume at the beginning of January.

Because of taking courses from more than one academic year, the schedules for two of my spring courses conflict with one another, so I had to obtain permission to take one of the courses by doing extra work outside of class to make up for the sessions that I will not be able to attend because of the conflict. Never a dull moment! This is what is on the agenda after the first of the year:

January Term Hispanic Church Studies – M1310 Mission in a Multicultural Context Required Junior Course (This is an intensive three week program that will involve field work on both sides of the border).

Theological Studies – T1310 God and Creation/Systematic Theology Required Junior course

Junior Warden Report Rick Fields

Have you noticed the cross on our church steeple leaning at nearly a 45-degree angle? The cross took a beating this summer with the strong winds and we are trying to find someone with a cherry picker or bucket truck that goes higher than 35 feet so that we can get it repaired. We’ve contacted Salt River Project as they have been able to help out in the past but are no longer able to due to liability risks. If anyone knows of someone who can assist with this please contact me so that I can get this repaired soon.

A Note from St. Nicholas "It is fitting that the feast of St. Nicholas comes at the beginning of Advent and the beginning of the shopper's season. As the patron saint of shoppers he proclaims, ‘Keep it simple!' Keep it simple enough to fit in a shoe or a stocking.

One gift that could fit in a…shoe, or in a stocking hanging on the fireplace, is a note that speaks of one of our most precious gifts, the gift of time. Such a St. Nicholas note might read: ‘The gift I give to you is half an hour of quality conversation each night right after the dishes are done.' Or, ‘The gift I give to you is one Saturday a month to be with you and do whatever you want to do.' We can appreciate the value of such a gift if we keep in mind that according to a recent survey, the average married couple in America has only 30 minutes a week of communication outside of exchanges that take place at the dinner table, and between parent and child is only 14 minutes. As you can see, the possibilities are almost unlimited for these St. Nicholas shoe gifts.

Come, St. Nicholas, patron of shoppers and gift-seekers, and make Christmas this year fun, creative and love-filled."

From the Treasurer

Bryan Reynoso Being the treasurer of St. Andrew’s has been one of the great honors in my life. I was in a position where I was able to alleviate some of Ed Comtois’ concerns as he fought his battle with cancer, and I had the trust of the congregation to do what was needed to make sure that the lights stayed on every Sunday. What I did not realize was the amount of time that was required to properly be the treasurer, and with my new job, I know that I cannot be that person for St. Andrew’s. So, the search has begun for my replacement, and that person could be you. What does is take to be the treasurer? You have to be able to balance the books each month, pay the bills of the church, and be a part of the vestry. Oh, and don’t forget to pay the taxes. Can you handle it? Great things are happening at St. Andrew’s. We have people in the right places doing the right things. You are already a part of this, but you could be more as the treasurer. Think about it. Pray about it. Let Melinda know if you are interested. Now, on to the budget news… If you have checked the bulletin board for the latest budget, you have seen that income is down (a little), but so are expenses. We have two months to make our mark on 2008. The Finance Committee will be addressing the new budget and submit one that we can work with for 2009. I hope that the proposed budget will be posted early in January so that we can all look at the pros and cons before approving it at the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting will be our opportunity to unify our faith commitment to St. Andrew’s and continue our faith journey together. Thank you for supporting me as your treasurer.

In God’s Love, Bryan

Chancel Choir Update

Don Palm Minister of Music

Advent season is upon us already and Christmas is just around the corner. Your Chancel Choir will be singing at the Christmas Eve later service and will perform a new number written and arranged by your Maestro entitled "A Savior is Born Here Tonight with Silent Night." If you're curious about where Maestro originated (referring to Don Palm), it was a title given to me by Fr. Al Holland after he first arrived at St. Andrew's and the name Maestro has followed me through the years and is something I respond to and acknowledge.

I again thank those who have graciously given of their musical talents over the past year and especially on the stadium Sundays when the choir was working the food booth to help support our church. All of you have demonstrated accountability of your determined faith in your church lives. Have a blessed Christmas and wonderful New Year.

Stewardship

Our stewardship drive is slowing down as many of you have brought as your financial gifts on Sunday, November 30. And I thank you for those. We are far from our goal of meeting our needs for a 2009 Budget. To date we have received 26 pledges totaling: Operating budget: $54,189.16 Building fund : 12,531.96 Yes, we have some work cut out for us. But I believe in you and I believe in the Lord will direct us to our needs. Some of you have not yet turned in your cards and so I ask that you please do so as soon as possible. If you did turn in your cards but the Lord lays it on your heart to increase your pledge please feel free to do so. All is greatly appreciated no matter how large or small you may be able to pledge. It is not too late to begin the 15 minutes a day with the Lord. I do believe we cannot give from our heart and without fear if we are not in communication with the Provider of all we have. I urge you to continue your time each day in prayer and study/mediation if you took the 30-day challenge. The stewardship driving is slowing down but do not expect it to go away until next year. We have much to share and expect to be with you thru out the coming year.

Thank you and many Blessing to you all, Diane Engels

Outreach Diane Engels

Merry Christmas to all! Well the season begins and through times are difficult it is a time of giving and sharing. Please remember that there is always someone in a more difficult place that you may be. Sometimes we look at where we are and wonder how could there be any one out there struggling more than I and we turn around and there that person is. Sometimes I think God puts that person in our face just to help us remember “oh yes it could be worse.” When that happens I hope you quickly whisper a prayer of thanks for what you do have. Please during this season when possible remember our gift card drive to help support some of the needs that come knocking to the doors of our church. Melinda so often get request for gas, food, baby needs and medical needs. Our gift of small gift cards can help her help our community needs.

Just make your purchase of a gift cards of $5, 10 or 15.00 and place them in the offering plate as it goes by you on any Sunday. McDonalds or Burger King are good as there is one in East and west of the church. Safeway and Fry’s are also close to the church.

Thank you for your loving hearts and have a Blessed Christmas, Diane Engels

Altar Flowers Ted Warlick

It has been my pleasure to have had the opportunity to be able to arrange the altar flowers for St. Andrew's when Phyllis Widowski had knee surgery this year and was not able to do the flower arranging. At times it has been a challenge, but I am humbled because of the inspirations God has given to me. I do appreciate the time I have had to share my skills with you. I cannot continue doing the flowers so as of the end of year I will pass on the honor of doing the altar flowers to Ruthann Stark. She is truly the answer to my prayers.

Christian Education

Lori Cooper

There are several happenings with our Sunday school children. First, they have put together the shoeboxes full of toiletries for the homeless (what a wonderful way to share with the less fortunate). Secondly, we are hard at work practicing for the Christmas pageant. This year’s pageant is called “The Legend of the little star of Bethlehem.” You will see a lot of stars, singing, and a little humor. Don’t let this Jesus story pass you by! They will also be learning about Advent and all the special times it has in store for us. Moms and Dads: For the pageant, your child will have to be at the church NO LATER than 3:30 pm. This will give us time to don the costumes and make last minute changes if needed.

ATTENTION ALL SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS: YOU ARE INVITED TO OUR ANNUAL SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER’S MEETING. THIS EVENT IS FREE AND FOR ALL OF US, PLEASE LET ME

Grade classed sponsored this Outreach Project and the children from all the classes joined together along with the teachers to put the boxes together. We received donations (over 600 items) ranging from baby-wipes, underwear, personal hygiene products and much more and were able to make up 31 shoe boxes which were blessed on St. Andrew’s Day. These boxes along with any extra items will be taken to the homeless shelters to be dispersed to those in need. Any other items (clothes, blankets, coats) that you wish to donate will be greatly accepted and they will be taken down to the shelters to help those less fortunate than us during these tying times.

Thoughts from the King of the Kitchen

Ted Warlick, King of the Kitchen Thanks to all the volunteers who have brought in wonder treats each Sunday. We still need volunteers to sign up. The sign up sheets are located in the parish hall. You are free to decide what you want to bring. Right now we ask that you provide enough goodies for at least 60 servings. I still need volunteers to help me during coffee hour. Please see Ted Warlick if you are interested in volunteering.

The King of the Kitchen wishes everyone a very special Christmas and a very happy New Year.

Feed the Homeless Ruthann Stark

The program for Feeding the Homeless is right on schedule, lots of work, right through June '09. In November we served burritos and spanish rice, with many thanks to the extra helpers on the production line that filled, rolled and wrapped -- thank you, Wandalee, Ted and John. And thank you to those that came to the shelter to serve--Janet, Bola, Amber and Michael Fields, and the Willies. We regularly feed 160 women and families every time. We accept most donations of food, check with Ruthann or Steve, and most clothing, shoes, bedding and reading material. The need for blankets, pillows, coats and shoes is SO great at the men's overflow shelter, please remember these guys when you are cleaning out your closet. Paperback books and fairly current magazines are also welcome (save me your "People" magazines, your "Hotrod" and "Family Circle", for example). If you are unsure what to give, please ask me. Consider coming to help on cooking day, even for an hour or two, and many thanks to a certain person who spent a much appreciated hour chopping tomatoes (Ted, you know who I mean).

In this season of giving, please remember the homeless. Thank you for all your support and the cupcakes!

Advent Lessons and Carols Service – December 21, 2008 We will celebrate Advent with a traditional Lessons and Carols Service on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 9:15 AM. This will be a combined 8:00 AM and 9:15 AM service. In the old English liturgies, the Advent Offices made a preparation for the coming of our Lord to this earth far more vivid and eager than those of our present prayer book. So and Advent carol service, if without precedent, is not without suitability, if it helps to express 'the desire of all nations and ages.' The purpose of the service was 'not celebrate Christmas, but to expect it. The Lessons and Carols Service will also include Eucharist. The Chancel Choir will sing some traditional and some not so traditional Christmas carols. You to will also be able to 'make a joyful noise unto the Lord.' Come and celebrate.

Caught in the Net Just odds and ends of random thoughts from an

Anonymous Fisherman. You know how a melody gets stuck in your head? It just keeps going around and around–maybe with the words or maybe without. Well, “These are a few of my Favorite Things” is going around in mine like a carousel. And since this is a season of thanksgiving and joy for so much, I just thought of a few of mine. Family, friends, a comfortable home, God’s grace and love. Peter, Paul, and Mary. No not that bunch. Peter who denied Christ, yet became the cornerstone of His church. Paul who stood by while Stephan and many others were persecuted and killed. Mary who was tormented by seven demons until Christ healed her. Peter, brash, impetuous, people pleasing Peter. Jesus’ right hand man all along and so very human. Haven’t we all opened mouth and inserted foot more than once. Haven’t we all denied Christ in some way. Haven’t we all just jumped in before we thought. Yet we can know that we are forgiven and accepted, pick ourselves up and move on to another part of our journey. Hopefully wiser and stronger. I can really relate to Peter and he gives me hope.

Paul, smart, educated, upper crust society and dedicated to God and the protection of the Temple. None of this changed on the road to Damascus, but his direction did. He became just as determined to share Christ with us pagans as he had been to stop “the movement.” Kind of like some reformed smokers, eh? Without that dedication we would still be pagans. His change in direction is a road map for us. Mary Magdalene, full of demons, reputation maligned by history and in some respects still a mystery. Most faithful of all. The first at the tomb, the first Christ appeared to, discounted by the men. But she was there and she believed “He is risen.” Her faith was strong in the face of ridicule, may mine be too. Yes, these are a few of my favorite things. The list really goes on and on. It all started with the birth of a precious baby so long ago. Let’s keep that our most favorite thing now. Listen to the music, sing the songs, laugh, enjoy the crowds and festivities, remember those who have less. How we treat this time of year is up to each of us. Live, laugh, love and be happy or bah humbug. Have a very Merry Christmas and God bless us, everyone. Cast your net wide with love and good cheer.

A chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew is forming. All men are invited to attend. We will meet on the 2

nd and 4

th Saturday of each month. This is a ministry for the spreading of Christ's kingdom among men

and boys in the Episcopal/Anglican Communion. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew's mission is to usher men and boys into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. With a vision to become the leading men's ministry in the Episcopal Church and the worldwide Anglican communion with God's help. The discipline of the Brotherhood is to pray daily for the spread of Christ's kingdom, especially amoung men and youth, and for God's blessing upon the labors of the Brotherhood. To study the Holy Scriptures regularly and the teaching of the Church; to attain a better understanding of how to follow Christ and bring others into his kingdom; to make continuous efforts, week by week, to bring others nearer to Christ through His Church. See Bill Archer if you have any questions or interested in joining.

Andrew’s Helping Hands – Season 3

Stadium News Ruth Reynoso

The work at the stadium is still going strong! Thanks to all of those who continue to give of their time and talent to "sell beer for God"!! We are having a great time but are also looking forward to the end of the season and our work at the stadium. It has been a long 3 years for a lot of us. It looks like the Cardinals are going to the playoffs this year so look for an additional game sometime in January. I will keep you posted. We are making around $1800 - $2000 per game. It has been a great final season for us. Anyone interested in taking over the booth, please see me!

Scrapbook Club

Barbara Fabre

We've worked our little fingers to the bone this past year and yet we can't wait to get started again in 2009. Our first scrapbook Saturday will be on January 24th. We gather in the south end of the parish hall with all our cropping paraphernalia, a sack lunch and our creativity at 9:00 AM and finish up around 6:00 PM. Lately we've gone out to dinner together too. Of course, if you'd like to join us and this is just too much in one day for you.....you can participate as little or as much as your schedule allows!

Dates for future 2009 scrapping sessions are as follows; January 24, February 28, March 28 and April 25. Watch for future dates for scrapbook Saturdays, scrapbook shopping excursions to the east valley and cropping camps! See you in 2009!

“Ladies” of Les Chapeaux Rouges Barbara Fabre

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We've had a fun year and it's not over yet. In December we are going to the Marriott Desert Ridge Resort to see Santa's Gingerbread Village and then we are headed back to the Botanical Gardens to enjoy the luminarias, which will be even more special this year because of David Gillhouly's art scattered around the gardens! How fun will that be!

The new year promises to be another year of FUN for us. Our first outing will be on January 10th when we head to the new World Wildlife World Zoo Aquarium. This has been a long anticipated adventure. Our first and very important meeting will be held on Sunday January 18th after the 9:15 service in the south end of the parish hall. I'd really like to see every St. Andrew's Red Hat at this meeting and anyone who like to become a Red Hat. We've got fun activities to plan, dues (National $20.00 and local $5.00) to collect and some serious matters (sorry) to discuss. Have a blessed Christmas and may your new year be filled with more blessings than you can count!

Christmas Blessings, Rosey the Queen Mum

Cans for Christ Barbara Goodall

The Tuesday Morning Women's Bible Group/Tuesday Morning Cusillo Group is collecting aluminum cans for recycling. A can is in the Parish Hall for them or if you have a large bag give them to Barbara Goodall. Proceeds will go to the St. Andrew's General Fund.

Besides the money raised, this is a "Green Project" to help protect God's earth. Please NO TRASH and watch your children so they don't put trash in as this contaminates the whole collection.

Don’t throw away your computer printer cartridges. There’s money to be made for St. Andrews!! Cartridge World (a new printer cartridge business) is helping non- Profit organizations raise money by purchasing used computer printer cartridges. Some HP printer cartridges will get as much as $3.00 to $4.00 per cartridge. A list Of computer cartridges and amounts redeemed by Cartridge World is located in the Parish Hall. There is also a container to drop your used printer cartridges in.

Teddy Bear Ministry John Schartow

Our St. Andrew's "Teddy Bear" ministry continues as it has for the last four years. We collect new and new looking stuffed animals, which we donate to police departments and other organizations which deal with children (and some times adults) who are in great need usually through no fault of their own. When a child whose house has just burned or whose parents have just been taken to jail or a hospital are in great stress, a stuffed animal to hug given by a policeman or other emergency worker can be of real comfort. We help to fill that need. You can donate a stuffed animal, which is around the house unused or one you pick up at a toy department new, it will be appreciated by those to whom we donate and especially to those who receive it. Keep those bears (and dogs and ducks and lambs) coming.

The St. Andrew's Prayer Chain

Anyone who is in need of prayer or would like to ask prayer for another, may do so by emailing [email protected], or by leaving the prayer on the written Prayer List found on the podium in the Narthex on Sundays. If you have a computer and would like to become a praying member of our E-Mail Prayer Team, please contact the church office.

Prayer for the Nation Prayer written by President George Washington

“Almighty God; we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

* * * * * * * * * * * DAILY MOTIVATION – We do not remember days, we remember moments -- Cesare Pavese THE POWER OF 10% - How small changes can make a BIG difference.

To do something, however small, to make others happier and better,

is the highest ambition, the most elevating hope, which can inspire a human being.

Alexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, shortly before her first birthday. While receiving a stem cell transplant when she was four years old, Alex told her mom, “When I get out of the hospital I want to have a lemonade stand.” She wanted to give the money to the doctors to help them find a cure for childhood cancer. Later that year, Alex held her first lemonade stand and raised $2,000. As Alex continued to hold yearly stands in her front year, news of her love and dedication to her cause spread. People held their own lemonade stands and donated the proceeds to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Overtime, her story became known and people all over the wold began to fall in love with Alex. In 2004, at the age of 8, Alex passed away. During her short, but precious existence she had raised over $1 million to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. Her love for her cause – and her love for other children battling cancer – gave her the strength to make a difference and to inspire others to do the same. By 2008. Alex's Lemondae Stand Foundation had raised over $20 million for childhood cancer research. Allow the love for those things that you hold dear to inspire you to get involved, to support one another, to make a difference. Reach out 10% more often and take action while you can. Our moments in life may be fleeting but, in the end, the good that we can achieve, through love, remains. Jesus said, “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

A Prayer for the New Year

Come, Holy Spirit,

Spirit of God, Spirit of the Risen Christ, Be with us today and always.

Be our Light, our Guide, and our Comforter. Be our Strength, our Courage,

And our Sanctifier. May this new year be a time

Of deep spiritual growth for us, A time for welcoming Your graces and gifts,

A time for forgiving freely and unconditionally, A time for growing in virtue and goodness.

Come, Holy Spirit, Be with us today and always.

Amen.
