Hessen is an international state and offers both German and foreign-bornworkers excellent employment perspectives. Since 2012 employmentnumbers have been growing particularly dynamically. The number ofpersons employed has increased by more than seven percent over thisperiod, with the number of German workers rising by around 4% and that offoreign-born workers even by about 37.8 percent. Therefore, some 13.7percent of all persons employed are of foreign nationality at the moment –an above-average number compared with the German average.

Dual vocational training is the central pillar of the strategy of Hessen’seconomy to meet its own demand of skilled professionals. Each yearsome 37,300 young people start dual vocational training atvocational schools and companies.

The STEM sectors and occupations in the fields of mathematics,computer science, sciences and technology are the main focus of dualvocational training schemes. In 2016 a total of 35,900 apprentices, orone in three, completed their dual vocational training in the STEMsectors in Hessen. This is almost one in three of all apprentices.

Motor vehicle mechatronics technicians, plant mechanics,electronics technicians, IT specialists, and warehouse logisticsspecialists are examples of professions that require the completionof a dual vocational training programme and which are currently inhigh demand in Hessen’s automotive industry, logistics sector,engineering sector as well as the metal and electronics industries.This is why there was a high number of new hires among membersof these professions in 2016.

Chemical and pharmaceutical products are main exports, mechanical engineering industry is second-largest exporter

Products of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry are by farHessen’s top exports. They therefore lead the 2016 ranking of themost important export products with a volume of 17.2 billion euros,which accounts for 29.3 percent of Hessen’s entire export volume.They are followed by machinery, cars, and electronics and electricalengineering products. These product categories are at the same timeHessen’s most important imports. With 14.3 billion euros, products ofthe electrotechnical industry account for the largest share of the totalimport volume followed by chemical and pharmaceutical productswith 11.1 billion euros.

In 2016 Hessen’s economy exported goods were worth 58.6 billioneuros. Hessen’s imports had a volume of 86.2 billion euros and saw anincrease of 3.5 percent.

In 2016 12.1 percent of all of Hessen’s exports went to the US. It isfollowed by France and Great Britain with a share of 7.7 and 6.9percent, respectively, ahead of the Netherlands with 6.6 percent.With a volume of goods exports to China valued at 3 billion euros,it is, along with the US, another non-EU country among the TOP 10trading partners.

The majority of Hessen’s exports, 65 percent, go to countries inEurope. With 16.5 percent, the second largest export market isAsia, closely followed by America with 15.6 percent. With a 5.1export share, China is the most important purchaser of exportsfrom Hessen to Asia.

The United States and the People’s Republic of China are Hessen’smain trading partners. For the first time, China is in first placeamong the exporters of goods to Hessen with a volume of 9.7billion euros, which accounts for a 11.2 percent share of Hessen’stotal imports. The US takes second place with a volume of goodsexported to Hessen valued 7.8 billion euros and a 9.1 percentshare of the total imports.

With a share of 60 percent, most of all goods imports to Hessencome from European countries. As with exports, the Asiancontinent comes second with a share of 26.4 of imports followed byAmerica with an 11.1 percent share.
