Facts about Hell's Gate National Park

Hell's Gate National Park lies to the south of Lake Naivasha in Kenya, North West of Nairobi.The park which is mainly comprised of savannah ecosystem habours a wide variety of wildlife.Some of the frequently observed animal species include lions, leopards, and cheetahs. There are

over 100 species of birds in the park, including vultures, Verreaux's Eagles, augur buzzard, andswifts. African buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson's gazelle, and baboons are alsocommon. The park is also home to klipspringer antelope and Chanler's mountain reedbuck.

Hell'sGate National Park is named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoriclake that fed early humans in theRift Valley. It was established in 1984. A small national park, itis known for its wide variety of wildlife and for its scenery.[2]This includes the Fischer's Towerand Central Towercolumnsand Hell's Gate Gorge. Thenational parkis also home to threegeothermal power stationsat Olkaria. The park is equipped with three basic campsites andincludes a Maasai Cultural Center, providing education about theMaasai tribe'sculture andtraditions.

Hell's Gate National Park is named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of aprehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley.[3]It received the name "Hell's Gate" byexplorers Fisher and Thomson in 1883.[4]

In the early 1900s,Mount Longonoterupted, and ash can still be felt around Hell's Gate.[4]Thecomprehensive Olkaria Geothermal Station, the first of its kind in Africa, was established in1981 and generates geothermal power underneath Hell's Gate from the area's hot springs andgeysers.[3]The park was officially established in 1984.[5]

Hell's Gate National Park covers an area of 68.25 square kilometres (26 sq mi), relatively smallby African standards.[6]The park is at 1,900 metres (6,200 ft) above sea level.[1]It is withinNakuru District, nearLake Naivashaand approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) fromNairobi.[2]The park is located 14 kilometres (9 mi) after the turnoff from the old Nairobi-Naivashahighway, and has a warm and dry climate.[2]Olkaria and Hobley's, two extinct volcanoes locatedin the park, can be seen as well as obsidian forms from the cool molten lava.[6]Within Hell'sGate is the Hells Gate Gorge, lined with red cliffs which contain two volcanic plugs: Fischer'sTower and Central Tower.[6]Off of Central Tower is a smaller gorge which extends to the southand of which a path descends intohot springsthat at some places you can find rocks that willburn you. also there is a fair amount of sulfer you can feel in the water.[7]

There is a wide variety of wildlife in the national park, though many are few in number.[6]Examples of little seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and cheetahs.[8]However, the park has

historically been an important home for the rarelammergeyervultures.[2]

The park is popular due to its close proximity toNairobiand lowered park fees compared toother National Parks.[6]Hiking, bicycling, and motorcycling and even camping are encouragedwithin the park,[6]one of only two Kenyan national parks where this is allowed.[4]The DailyNationpraised the mountain climbing in Hell's Gate as "thrilling.",during a stay in hells gate it isalso safe (from experience) to take a side hike and bush whack your own safari (Do Not Leave ATrace!) It also recommended the Joy Adamson's Centre and boating onLake Naivasha.[9]AMaasai Cultural Center provides education about theMaasai tribe'sculture and traditions.[7]

The park is equipped with three basic campsites, camping is safe in the park even though thereare no guns or fencing between you and wildlife.[2]There are also several lodges around

The park has a sophisticated hiking ground with high rocks that will bring out your prowess asthe knight in shining amour. The extinct volcanoes at Olkaria and Hobley's are a worthyadrenalin rush and Olkaria Geothermal Station will make you think Fishers Tower, formerly a

volcano's plug was a peep into the future. The Njorowa Gorge, the obsidian rocks and the cavesare too contrasting yet subliminal. Climbers will have a Kenya Vacations day with the rocks but

for the jolly good fellow,game viewing andbird Watching are fine even with the hot-temperedbuffalo in the vicinity.

The wonderful view from Fischers tower can rid one of the fear of heights and ignite intimatepassions. Rock climbing and hiking draws many people as does camping. You will find thatriding is a different experience from what you knew before and the seemingly boring cave andexploration in the extinct volcanoes at Olkaria and Hobley's are memories you will hidesomewhere in your head as special. Open Game viewing and bird watching will spur yourcreativity and will set you free and wild...in a blissful way.

Access to Hell's Gate

Several kilometers off the Naivasha-Nairobi highway, the park is situated to the rugged end ofthe town about 1 km fromNaivasha town. The main access gate is the Elsa gate though theOlkaria gate is also available. No air transport is available but the roads are in good condition.

Climate

Rainfall in this park is what ice is to the Polar Regions. From 5,000-7,000ft, it is expected that750-850mm of rain per year should fall. The average yearly temperature stays at 27oC.However, during the long rains, daily temperatures may drop from 24C to 14C.
