• Pumps can be tested to various industry standards including ANSI/HI (Hydraulic Institute) 14.6, ANSI/HI 11.6, and ISO 9906.

• It is also critical to ensure your pump testing facility is ISO 9001 certified and that all test instrumentation is calibrated on a regular schedule to ensure accurate results.

• Test options include standard hydraulic testing including flow, head, and power; vibration; noise; NPSH; suction lift; hydrostatic pressure testing; and temperature.

Important Changes to Hydraulic Institute (HI) Standards

14.6-2016 – Hydraulic Performance Acceptance Tests

This revised standard combined multiple standards for different pump configurations into 1 comprehensive section.

Table 14.6.3.4 – Pump tests acceptance grades and corresponding tolerance band

Trillium Pumps USA standard testing level is 1U for clean water applications and 2B for wastewater applications

Recommendation: HI recommends 2B for pumps 125HP & less & 1B for 150HP or more. Don’t simply reference HI for testing. Make sure you specify the acceptance criteria 1U or other OEM’s might comment that they will adhere to a lower/easier level.

Important Changes to Hydraulic Institute (HI) Standards

9.6.4-2016 – Vibration Measurements & Allowable Values

In 2009 the HI 9.6.4 standard significantly reduced the acceptable vibration limits.

Figure 9.6.4.2.5.1b – Allowable pump vibration, pump types VS1 & VS6

The standard reduced allowable vibration by about 50%!

Recommendation: Make sure you specify “Vibration shall be in accordance with HI 9.6.4-2016”. Other OEM’s might clarify/comment that they are meeting the criteria of a previous version.

Grit Capture and Removal Testing

The grit classifier manufacturer shall provide a method

for testing the grit classifier at the specified flow rate,

in its own manufacturing facility.

It is understood that the factory test will simulate the efficiency of the grit classifier system for collecting grit only from the test loop.

Samples shall be sent to a third-party laboratory to be analyzed. Analysis shall be based

on weight, volume and/or screening sieves, as appropriate.

Factory Testing Options

• Witness Testing: The Consultant and/or the Owner or its Representative may elect, at its discretion, to witness the testing of the equipment.

• Remote Witness Testing: The Consultant and/or the Owner or its Representative will have the opportunity to witness the testing of the equipment via a web-based private broadcast system. During this test, they shall have the ability to observe all collected data in real time as it is collected by the Test Lab Technician; have multiple selectable views of the test floor and the equipment being tested, and converse freely with the operators while the test is performed.

• PE (Professional Engineer) Certified: The manufacturer shall have Professional Engineer’s on staff to oversee and certify factory test results.

Factory Testing Summary

• Testing options and requirements can vary greatly – be specific when requesting or specifying testing requirements and tolerances.

• Specify PE (Professional Engineer) certified test curves when possible to ensure accurate results.

• Differences in testing requirements and options can have a significant impact on costs.

• Be aware of the Hydraulic Institute tests acceptance grades and corresponding tolerance bands.
