Type 65 Coupe“It Makes Me Feel Like Dan Gurney When I Drive It”

There were just six original Coupes ever made. Those cars captured the 1965FIA World Championship for America in the last years before mega-money stoleAmerican roadracing from its roots and from the average guy. Despite the factthat the design never entered production, those six cars, hand-built upon 289 ACchassis, became symbolic of the end of an era.

This car is one of the most unique and stunning shapes in automotive history.Even today, more than 40 years later, the muscular lines and aggresive stancehas no equal. I know of no other car more capable of making a Dodge Viperdriver appear to be wearing a skirt.

While the dramatic design makes people stop and stare, only the hard-core carguys know its full history. You won’t see three of them lined up at your local Star-bucks, and even at car shows these Factory Fives are rare birds. It is certainly nota car for everyone, but it is definitely the only car for some. Each Factory FiveType 65 Coupe is true to the road racing legacy that gave the design its birth,and yet with modern engineering and technologies, our cars are much more liv-able than the originals.

Of all our designs, the Coupe is my favorite. I have one parked at home in my own garage. I have raced it at tracks aroundthe country and drive it on the street here in New England. If things work out, one of my kids will own it someday. It makes mefeel like Gurney when I drive it, and my wife wrinkles her nose and says it smells like gas when I make her ride in it with me …A man cannot ask more of a car.

More than ten years ago, we began designing the Type 65 Coupe to be an accurate replica of the original 1965 World Champi-onship Coupes. The Type 65 Coupe was designed to capture the look and feel of the original 200 mph GT cars, but also usetoday’s engineering to make it more reliable and comfortable.

Like our Roadster, the Coupe can be built two ways. You can buy a base kit that is “donor Mustang capable,” or you can buy thecomplete kit that gives you just about every nut & bolt you need to build the car (except engine/trans/rear-end, wheels/tires, paint).

Base Kit - $15,990The Type 65 Coupe base kit is based on the innovation of using running gear from a single donor vehicle—namely, the high per-formance Ford Mustang. The concept was, and still is, so simple. If you have our base kit and running gear parts from a 1987-1993 Mustang GT donor car, you already have all the parts you need to build and drive your car!

Complete Kit - $20,990Over the years we have expanded our chassis kit to include factory-new parts as well. Our complete kit delivers to you…well, acomplete kit. The only things you’ll need to add are your own engine/transmission/rear end assembly, wheels/tires, and paint.

Today, more than 40 years later, you can build and pilot a car that is almost identical to those driven by guys like Bob Bondurant, Dan Gurney and Ken Miles. The only difference is that these days, technology has enabled vintage lines to merge withmodern comfort and performance.

While our talented engineering staff uses advanced computer CAD designs right upfront, our manufacturing team finishes the job by using the right materials, toolsand training to build a better part. Not only does Factory Five lead the componentcar industry in engineering technology, we set the bar just as high in manufacturing.

The Type 65 Coupe is made in our factory in New England, not Taiwan or SouthAfrica. The end result of all this work is that this most American of cars is made byAmerican craftsmen using the right tools, the right materials, the right way.

The chassis assembly area is where the weldedframes meet formed aluminum panels and gel-coated composite bodies to be mounted for shipping.

Our CNC lasercutting machineensures perfectcuts on our alu-minum and steelpieces while ourwelders work oncomputer-de-signed weldingjigs.

The Factory Five Racing Type 65 Coupe frame is the heart of the kit. Itis computer designed to be extremely strong yet maintain the beautyand elegance of early 1960s race car frame designs. The frameweighs about 300 lbs. and is shipped as part of an assembled chassiskit, ready to accept bolt-on components. The frame is a completelywelded assembly and is delivered in bare steel or with an optionalgloss black powdercoating.

Each of the six original Coupes were built on vintage AC chassis. Racing rules changed at

the end of the 1964 season to allow for the “modification” of the exterior body shape,

while using the same frame/chassis of an existing homologated design. Just like the origi-

nal, we too built our Coupe upon the strong foundation of a modified Mk4 chassis.

To make a better frame, you need to start with better materials. In

the Coupe we use certified materials. Plate steel is laser-cut type

A-36. Round tubing is DOM (drawn over mandrel). All tubing is

high quality mild carbon steel.

In-house manufacturing controls help maintain quality and repro-

ducibility. For example, our welders all use the same Millermatic™

250 MIG welding machines. Standardized equipment is part of a

comprehensive quality manufacturing program.

Aluminum Chassis PanelsAluminum Under Glass

The Factory Five Type 65 Coupe is built like a proper race car. Instead of usingkit-car style fiberglass for the cockpit, trunk and foot boxes, we followed in thetradition of real racecar builders and used aluminum and steel.

The aluminum chassis panels on our Coupe, like our Roadster, are one of themajor design and functional differences between us and almost all of the otherreplicas out there today. It is a design based firmly on CAD/CAM technologiesand incorporates the superior construction methods of modern auto racing andaerospace industries.

InteriorAll business at the Helm

The Coupe interior was designed to capture the essence ofthe original car, yet improve on things like ergonomics,cockpit space, and sound/heat management. We kept theinterior period correct and functional like its forbearer,however we designed in modern comfort and controls likesupportive seating, air conditioning, and improved visibility.All these things combine to enhance the driving experience rather than affect it.

The kits come with a complete interior and include quality items like the original style bucket seats. Vintage de-tails abound, like our beautiful wood and aluminum steer-ing wheel and safety items like the heart-attack serious race-cage, and five point racing harnesses for passenger and driver round out a nice package.

The clean lines and purposeful interiorcomplement the vintage design of thecar and underscore its serious purpose.

Front Suspension/BrakesThe ugly truth is that most kits, hot rods and customs handle terribly. The artistry and strength of the Factory Five Coupe chassis wouldbe a waste without an equally well-designed suspension. Computer simulations and hundreds of hours on the track under the most ex-treme conditions have helped our engineers design a world-class suspension that simply works great.

Front Suspension Base Kit

• Fully independent front suspension utilizing unequal length double wishbone suspension design

Rear SuspensionsThe Type 65 Coupe Coupe Chassis Kit is delivered ready to accept bolt-on rearsuspension components in one of three (3) rear suspension configurations:

1. Four Link Rear SuspensionOur standard 4-link suspension comes with custom anti-squat geometry and ready to accept Ford Mustang 8.8” solid axle donor rear suspension parts. Abouthalf of FFR Coupe kits are shipped with the affordable standard 4-link rear suspension, which is a great performance street car suspension.

2. Three Link Rear SuspensionThe upgraded 3-link rear suspension is standard in Type 65 Coupe complete kitsand all FFR Challenge Series cars. It includes the frame brackets, panhard rod,control arms, coil-over shocks and springs. Recognized as a proven and worthyupgrade to the standard Mustang 4-link, this suspension eliminates any bind andprovides an amazingly predictable ride at the track or on the street.

3. Independent Rear SuspensionOur Independent Rear Suspension upgrade is designed for those looking for themost comfort and authenticity, and can be added to either the base or the com-plete kit. It includes a welded-in cage, upper and lower tubular control arms, high-end Koni mono-tube rod-end coil-over shocks (matched to the fronts), and customassembled axles and CV joints. The IRS option for the Type 65 Coupe kit requiresthe 8.8” center section (from a 1989-1997 Ford Thunderbird), rear spindles, andbrakes.

Running GearThe Coupe can be built using small block Ford engines and a variety of transmis-sions. Engine bay and deck height limit engine selection to Ford small blocks (289,302, 351, 392, etc.). You’ll have a few more choices when it comes to transmis-sions. While there is plenty of room in the transmission tunnel for older set-ups, en-gine selection directs you to use the T-5 or a TKO (500 or 600). Call for detailsabout 5.0L Coyote engine install.

The Coupe is an extremely unique design and car. The need for authenticity makes the exterior components andtrim even more important. When you look closely, you’ll find that our Coupe stays faithful to the original car fromthe main body shape all the way down to the smallest of details.

The body shape and style was an accident … a lucky one. We started out to make an authentic 90” wheelbaseCoupe, using our Roadster chassis and pick-up points for reference. That first 90” wheelbase prototype was sim-ply too small. So we made the difficult decision to increase the vehicle dimensions. But we didn’t simply stretchthe wheelbase, rather we enlarged the entire vehicle about 6% to maintain proper scale. The result was a jaw-dropper!

The truth is the car simply looks right. It looks better than the original car and it’s also sleeker and more attractive than any of the three or four replicas out there that all seem to miss the mark by some distance… we nailed it.
