SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSPARENCY:
NOW MORE THAN EVERPresented by
Heather Granato
TRANSPARENCY AS AN EXPECTATION
But this also puts a responsibility on marketers to know their supply chain and relay information responsibly.
The move toward transparency in all areas of personalLife means we’re seeing that in business.
THE CHINA ‘BRAND’
New efforts underway to create a China “brand” into the industry that underscores the ingredients are quality.
Chinese companies are investing in quality processes, and have the ingredients to deliver, but must overcome consumer prejudices.
‘COUNTRY OF ORIGIN’ STUDY
United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA) conducted a study in 2007 and 2011, with the goal of seeing how consumers perceive “Made in China” products.
U.S. consumers believed the majority of ingredients in supplements were made in the U.S. and expressed concern that a Chinese ingredient origin statement would make them less likely to purchase.
‘COUNTRY OF ORIGIN’ STUDY
Perceived country of origin of dietary supplement ingredients
Base: All DS Users; n = 512; © NutraAnalyst 2007
‘COUNTRY OF ORIGIN’ STUDY
Purchase intent based on knowing country of origin
‘COUNTRY OF ORIGIN’ STUDY
• 80% of U.S. consumers believe the ingredients they consume are made in the U.S.
• Actually, 80% of these ingredients are produced in China.
• And for 80% of consumers, when they are told the ingredients are from China, the level of concern rises by 80%.
This means U.S. marketers have incentive to focus on quality based on process, not place, and quality over price.
COMMITTING TO QUALITY IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN
80% of dietary supplement ingredients come from China. They’re not only an ingredient supplier; however, but the dominant player and
increasingly driving innovation in ingredient production.
• Chenguang Biotech Group Co. (CCGB) developed a new method to produce lycopene from used tomato skins, lowering the cost and improving the sustainability footprint.
• BGG custom-built an 80-acre farm in Southern China that utilizes a fully-closed-photo-bioreactor system for natural astaxanthin production.
• Tairui Pharmaceutical engineered a proprietary two-step B12 production method instead of the traditional three-step fermentation model.
REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
• Companies doing business in the United States must be compliant with all U.S. regulations. In the supplement space, this means not only the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act (DSHEA) and its GMPs (good manufacturing practices) but the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and related sections such as the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) and Preventive Control Quality Individual (PCQI).
• Currently challenges around in-country training in Chinese for FSVP and PCQI. Some training and education at SupplySide China this June.
FOOD SAFETY REGS IN CHINA
As there are perceptions around the quality of Chinese ingredients, the government has taken action to implement food safety regulations that raise the bar and are designed to provide greater quality and transparency around Chinese materials.

As a response to major

Food Safety Law was
introduced as a direct and
concrete measure to
address shortfalls in the
regulatory system.
After 4 years of implementation,
authorities conducted a
comprehensive review of the Food
Safety Law. The major overhaul in
such a relatively recent enactment
reflects the complicated food
situation in China

TAKEAWAYS ON FOOD SAFETY
• There are increased penalties for non-compliance.
• The law extends to operational activities like storage,
transportation and loading.
• This extends to third-party and online trading platforms
also joint and mutual liability.
• Unified oversight by SFDA means improved consumer
protection and a system of penalties and compensation.
‘BLUE SKY ’ THINKING
As ingredientsonline.com has reported,
we’re seeing volatility in ingredient
pricing, due in part to government moves
to enforce environmental standards.
Taking the lead globally to address global
warming and other eco-issues, and have
the ability because of state power to
simply make a change.
BUILDING THE RELATIONSHIP
Business in China is conducted based on
your relationships. The term Guanxi
describes the basic dynamic in
personalized networks of influence. It
relates to the importance of maintaining
social and economic order by associating
oneself with others in a hierarchical
manner, with an emphasis on mutual
obligations, reciprocity and trust.
TRUST … BUT VERIFY
Certifications are prized in
China, and most organizations
have invested in them and are
pleased to showcase them.
Look for independent or third-
party audit organizations like
NSF International or SGS when
reviewing “quality” certificates.
MEETING FACE TO FACE
In-person meetings are a significant component of Chinese business culture. Consider taking a trip to China and meeting on-site with suppliers, ideally while they’re in production. If you can’t do so, work with organizations that have “boots on the ground.”
BUSINESS ‘MEETINGS’
Because a great deal of business is based on relationships, a lot is conducted at formal lunches and dinners, as well as social events. It’s important to take the time to honor the host, to initiate conversation and to sample the cuisine.
TOP TAKEAWAYS
• Consumers expect transparency in the supply chain; give it to
them as well as the education that puts it into perspective.
• Compliance isn’t just a good idea—it’s the law; know your
obligations across the supply chain.
• Trust but verify; use technology, testing and other tools to
ensure your materials are what you expect every time.
• Build the relationship; nothing beats the personal connection,
and getting into the field can change your whole perspective.
Thank You!
