Factifile on the Channel Tunnel 1. Loc ati on  The Channel Tunnel is located between France and England, under the Straight of Dover. Exactly it connects Folkestone(near Dover) and Coquelle(near Calais). 2. Bui ldi ng  The connecting of England and Fr ance was made up firstly in 1880, but in that time it wasn’t possible. Just 100 years later, in 1988 was the work really started.  The tunnel was dragged by eleven boring machines. These were working from the Straight of Dover’s two sides.  The tunnel’s construction was built mostly from concrete and steel by 13000 workers.(just from the England side was dragged out 4 million steres of limestone). The building operations cost 9 billions.  The tunnel’s lenght is 50 km(from Normand to Kent), and from this distance 39 km is under the sea level(The depth is from 40 to 75 meters). The Channel Tunnel has got three parallel tunnels: from these two’s width is 20 m(on one arrive from England and on the other arrive from France the trains). The middle, the third’s width is just 5 m. (Th is is the service tunnel.). The tunnels are 7.6 m high.  The inangaration was in 1994 on may the 6 th . On the celebration was there II. Elisabeth and that time’s french republicpresident, Francois Mitterrand. 3. Trai ns  The Eurostar trains’s speed is 300 km/h. Thaks to the Channel Tunnel the time of journey is just 2 hours and 54 minutes. (Just for compare: The time of journey between London and Paris with hydrofoil with change is 5 hours and 40 minutes. By plane this time is more, if we calculate that we must go sooner to the airport etc.) The Eurostar train is connected from 18 wagons, from thees two are buffetcar.  There are some shuttle wagons which are transport cars and lorrys. 4.Use
