Context

Great West has recently implemented a new program for its employees called

Collabhome or iLink. There are two diverse and distinctive viewpoints on the

value and use of such a social networking site for Great West Life employees.

Making a final determining is going to require considerable dialogue and time to

reflect on both options. Our dialogue today is just the beginning of a process to

build our mutual understanding of the various aspects involved with this issue,

so we are all better able to support the final decision.

1. To begin this dialogue on the pros and cons of this new social networking sitewe are going to take part in a Fishbowl Exercise, which will assist us in

developing a more complete understanding the iLink program. Questions of

clarification.

For this exercise I am going to ask you to number off 1, 2, 1, 2 and so on to divide

into two groups of equal size: one which will discuss the pros of the program andthe second will discuss the cons.

Each group will have an opportunity to discuss the issue while the other group

observes, much like looking at the fish in a fish bowl. I will ask a series of

questions to guide each group through a dialogue for encouraging discussion

during the small group discussion, keeping the discussion only among the innercircle, and then drawing out individual and group reactions during the

combined discussion later. The goal of this technique is for one group to

experience the others discussion, but is not discussed until the group

discussion time. Questions of clarification.

Provide 5 minutes for each group to build their perspective: Objective,

Reflective, and Interpretive information.

2. Direct the group discussing the cons aspect of the topic to sit on the inside

chairs, with the other group on outside. Remind each group of task. Ask for

any questions of clarification.

History? What are some of the known facts about the site?

What worries you about using iLink networking site? How have other people in

the organization responded to iLink networking site?

What do you see as some of the challenges using the iLink site?
