INTRODUCTION
OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE
The 4-day programme deals with geopolitical happenings and its applications for business decision making. It is a programme about economics, political and historical context in which businesses operate. It deals with Geopolitics, a word which has around 6 – 7 million hits, if you Google it. ‘Anyone brave or perhaps foolish enough to wade through a fraction of those potential references would not necessarily emerge any wiser of the definition of Geopolitics’ (Dodds, 2007). As mentioned in Klaus Dodds’ “Geopolitics: a Very Short Introduction”, the social theorist Michael Mann once quipped, ‘geopolitics, like most terms that have attracted academic attention, is slippery’. As some scholars have noted, geopolitics is frequently used to convey a certain kind of strong perception towards actions by political actors including states and state leaders and other significant state and non-state actors using geographical templates such as “axis of evil”. However, it is relevant that academics explore the outcomes that follow from dividing the world into various zones. We would use Geopolitics as a prism to look at the world in which we are living. We would like to pay attention on how geopolitics works in practice and how it helps in strategising business decisions. In doing so we would obviously be making references to contemporary geopolitical metaphors like BRICS, rogue States, Axis of Evil, etcetera.
The 4 day MDP would seek to discuss and study how policy makers comprehend and manage, competing political interests, the discipline of economic forces and the lessons of history. Our goal is to understand how and why governments implement particular polices and how these policies shape the world. That understanding will help us to recognize the threats and opportunities that these policies create for business and provide tools to help us evaluate the environment for short and long-term investments. This programme seeks to encourage current and future managers who can create a significant advantage for the firms they lead and the industries they shape.
