This issue, covers off the soothing powers of Lavender, we take a look at our Skin Deep winter express treatments for clients and introduce a new face that’s joined the Skin Deep Beauty team. When I was about 8 years old, our neighbour completed the Joyce Blok course and opened a salon in our local area of Orewa. Honestly? I loved her white smock uniform!! I vowed I would have one one day, and I did! 26 years in the industry and I still love it!

How were you first introduced to Skin Deep?

When I opened my own salon I was looking for a professional range that was active but as natural as possible. It was on recommendation from a lovely therapist who I worked with many years previously. Have to say I’m a bit of a fan of SD!

What is your favourite Skin Deep product, why, and how do you use it?

Oh so many! but Soothing Balm is my latest gem. I prescribe this a lot for acne and get the best results, usually within a couple of days.

What is your top tip for clients when recommending Skin Deep products?

Less is best! Lots of concentrated ingredients so a small amount goes a long way.

Lavender Essential OilIs there anything that Lavender can’t do? Antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, stress and anxiety reducing, sleep-inducing, acne treatment, bug repellent, respiratory support, promotes hair growth, digestion aid and much, much more! Lavender is one of the most widely used, well known essential oils but many don’t know the full repertoire of benefits that it offers. This aromatic purple flower is literally one of nature’s superheroes!

The origin of Lavender is believed to be from the Mediterranean, Middle East and India. Its history goes back some 2,500 years. Lavender is a flowering plant of the mint family known for its beauty, its sweet floral fragrance and its multiple uses.

Lavender derives its name from the Latin ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash”. The Romans used Lavender to scent their baths, beds, clothes and even hair. They also discovered its medicinal properties.

According to the book The New Healing Herbs, essential oils extracted from flowers contain more than 150 compounds. Lavender essential oil is easily and quickly absorbed into the skin, and can be detected in the blood in as little as 5 minutes.

Lavender essential oil has very powerful antiseptic properties.

Applying it to wounds can not only increase cell growth causing the wound to heal faster, but it also decreases the appearance of scars. The oils anti-microbial action protects scrapes and wounds from infection, while allowing them heal.

By massaging lavender oil into the skin, it can be used to treat a number of skin problems such as acne, burns, dry skin, eczema, itchy skin, sunburn, seborrhea, and skin inflammation.

Lavender has analgesic (pain-relieving), digestive, sedative, antiseptic, antibacterial, carminative and antispasmodic properties. Its therapeutic benefits are thought to be due to two constituents, linalool and linalyl aldehyde, which counter inflammation, swelling and pain, while protecting against infection.

WHAT WE’RE #CRUSHING ON R IGHT NOW

Honey Body ButterI’m not sure about you, but right now with the weather being so cold and dry, I’m reaching for my Honey Body Butter morning and night to replenish, hydrate and restore my skins natural moisture balance. Intensely hydrating and re-balancing the Honey Body Butter is the perfect finish to any of our Skin Deep Body Treatments, especially for those clients that have lipid dry skins or flakiness. Skin Deep Honey Body Butter has many uses in salon; from being incorporated into a body wrap treatment, used as a massage medium or in a pedicure or foot massage. It can also be used as an effective throat treatment, applied under gauze and the eco soy candle wax for 20 minutes! This is a special favourite of mine as an add on to any facial treatment for your clients.

Who can use Honey Body ButterHoney Body Butter is suitable for all skin types, especially those with lipid dry skins or flakiness. Do not use or recommend to clients that have an intolerance to bee products such as; propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen or an intolerance to honey.

How to use Honey Body ButterWe recommend using day and night after showering, warmed in the hands before applying to the body and then massaged for 1-2 minutes paying particular attention to those dry or calloused areas.

How to use as part of a treatment in salon1. Warm 1½ - 2 Tbsp Honey

Body Butter in the hands and massage across the body.

2. When partially absorbed, press into the skin to finish, ensuring total absorption.

3. For skins that do not easily absorb products, or to ensure deeper penetration, the therapist may apply warm compresses to assist penetration.

Skin Deep Honey Pedicure30 minutesProcedure

1. Add Refreshing All Over Wash and two drops of Manuka/Kanuka Oil to warm water in a foot bath and soak feet for 10 mins.

2. Remove one foot and dry thoroughly. Clip and shape nails and apply Soothing Balm to cuticles and gently push back. Use a heel file to remove any rough skin from the feet.

3. Using Honey Walnut Body Polish, exfoliate the feet paying particular attention to those dry and hardened areas. Rinse and repeat with other foot.

4. Using Honey Body Butter, massage each foot for 10 minutes and wrap in a hot towel compress.

5. Dry with a warm dry towel.

6. Wipe nails with Nail Polish Remover to remove any residue cream and then paint with polish in your clients chosen shade.

Mid-Winter 30 Minute Express Treatments

Skin Deep Express Honey Facial with Energising Honey Gel Mask30 minutesBefore you begin

• Place your facial towels into a towel warmer

• Place the Energising Honey Gel Mask in a bowl to warm in the towel warmer

Procedure

1. Using 1-2 pumps of Nourishing Cream Cleanser, warmed by dipping your hands in warm water. Apply to the face in smooth sweeping movements. If the client is wearing eye makeup use Nourishing Cream Cleanser to remove it by sweeping it over the eye area and using dampened cotton pads to remove before starting to cleanse the rest of the face. Use a hot compress to remove.

2. Repeat Step 1 and then hot compress off.

3. Apply a small amount of Gentle Cream Exfoliator to the fingers warmed by dipping your hands in warm water. With gentle rotations apply the Gentle Cream Exfoliator around the facial contours paying particular attention to those areas where there is a greater sebum production, stretched pores and very gently over cheek areas. Remove with a hot towel compress before using a facial mitt in light rotating movements to remove all residue product. Skin is now primed and ready to receive our first UMF™ Manuka Honey facial skincare product.

4. Paint the warmed Energising Honey Gel Mask over the face. Massage into the face for 1 minute. Cover with a warm facial towel and apply a hot compress over the original towel to keep consistent warmth across the face. Press to secure. Replace the outer towel with another hot compress once the warmth has dissipated. Repeat again if necessary. This process will take 5-7 minutes.

5. Remove facial towels with a final press on the skin. Warm Rejuvenating Honey Day Cream in your hands and press into the skin over the Energising Honey Gel Mask. Apply Nourishing Honey Eye Cream around the eye area and with a cotton bud, applying the Nourishing Lip Balm to the lips.

6. Finish with a light mist of Hydrating Honey Mist. Press the moisture into the skin.

Skin Deep Branding

Hopefully you have all received our eDM in late May with regards to our new branding and packaging which is rolling out to stores now. The Rejuvenating Honey Day Cream, Intensive Honey Night Repair, Nourishing Honey Hand Cream are in the trade, and the Nourishing Cream Cleanser due to be released any day now. Bear with us as we transition through the phase in phase out of our old packaging. I’m really excited to hear yours and your clients feedback, so please keep it coming!

The last phase for the moisturisers includes box packaging and also includes a spatula. I’m pleased to announce that these are on the way and are in production with a local packaging company. I hope you will get excited about these as much as I have been as the feel of the carton is next level luxury with a beautiful velvety texture.

Usage of Professional StockIt has been brought to our attention that there are Salons / Beauty Therapists that have been on-selling our Skin Deep professional sizes to clients. I would like to remind you that as noted in our Terms of Trade, professional size stock is only to be used for salon purposes and is not able to be on sold. Please take a moment to consider this; you really are doing yourself a disservice selling to clients in this manner as you are effectively taking your client out of the retail market for approx. 9-12 months when you could have had them purchase at least a minimum of 3 times with you during the same period, which in turn is more profitable for your business. The short term monetary gain is definitely lost on your long term profit.

Additionally, it damages our brand, the one that we ALL are working hard to build up, promote and sell. If your business is doing this you are damaging others – don’t have this on your

conscience, be an ethical business owner and work with the rest of the Skin Deep community to grow this amazing brand.

Any Skin Deep Beauty customers that are found to be retailing / on-selling professional sizes, will lose the rights to carry an account with us – so please be mindful of this and your continued success with your business.
