When your model has a strong haircut and you are trying to emphasise the clothes you should keep the make-up to a minimal. The hair compliments the model’s bone structure and dress - the make-up is a simple smoky eye using NYX Single Eyeshadow in Black

For the lips, try using a nude lipstick in matte or gloss, FACEON recommends MAC Fresh Brew.

BlONDE MODEl

Try different looks with a roll neck, as some may look too much with heavy make-up. Hair tied up is a must as it will make the model appear taller. However, a more extreme and quirky look can work too. Draw

on your own eyelashes and create an updated 60’s look. Experiment with different colours to create a modern twist on a classic look.

NYX’s Studio Liquid Liner is a highly pigmented liquid line and a great choice!

The models are wearing dresses by fashion designer Samantha Cole.

It is essential to compliment the make-up with the hair style of your model – when fused correctly the results can be striking.

Shooting in black and white is very different from shooting in colour. As a make-up artist failure to use the correct make-up will ruin a photograph by making it appear too dark. Here are some tips for the professional artist:

FAcEON Tips n’ Tricks• The Main goal is to create high contrast between the skin tone and facial features - so do not load on the foundation and concealer as it tends to show up a lot in the pictures.

• Practise with lipsticks before you shoot.

• If the model has red tones to his/her skin it will come out grey in black and white pictures. (Use a yellow concealer to help with the redness.)

• Make-up that has hints of blue, red or purple will look darker in images.

• Black eye shadows appear grey - apply liquid black or paints for a smoky eye effect.

• Warm shades and yellow/orange tones do not come out very strong on black and white pictures.

• Concentrate on bone structure and experiment with the lighting for a dramatic, glamorous look.

• Apply a darker contour colour to the indents of the cheeks to bring out an edgy look in black and white photos.

Remember!

Dark shades of red and green and the ever invincible white work best for black and white photography.

Avoid pinks, yellows and light blues. Shades should be stronger and applied more heavily than usual creating a strong contrast.

1. To prepare the face ready for the application of make-up, cleanse, tone, moisturise lightly and

apply a primer to the face and neck.

4. Next take your Kryolan Aquacolor in ‘white’. Wet your brush again and swirl your

brush into the Aquacolor until you have a white paste on your brush. Apply this over

your eyebrows and over your eyelashes. Let the product dry and reapply in order to get a strong

colour. Still using the white Aquacolor, use another brush to line your waterline, underneath

the bottom lashes and over the top lashes, to make the eyes stand out further.

2. Apply your very pale Kryolan Ultra foundation in ‘TV White’ to the skin, covering face, ears, neck, shoulders, arms and hands. As this product is a crème foundation, make sure that the application is light. For best results,

use the MAC 187 duo fibre brush and apply the foundation to the face in small circular motions.

5. After this, take your Aquacolor in ‘silver blue’ and wet and swirl your brush in the product as you did with the white. Add a little of the silver blue to your brush and contour underneath the

cheekbones. Blend it with a dry brush.

With what is left of the product on your brush, shade ever so slightly around the hairline to

make the make up look more three dimensional.

3. Wet your brush with a little water and dip lightly into your MAC pigment in ‘Frost’. Apply

liberally around the eye area, up to the brow bone, and then down to hide any shadows under the eyes. Blend well into the foundation with a

dry fluff brush.

6. Use your Benefit eye shadow in ‘Like what you sea?’ to apply to the socket area of the eye and blend out. Take the eye shadow down and

halfway underneath the eye, to create a ‘v’ shape around the corner of the eye.

7. Take your Aquacolor in ‘silver blue’ again and apply to the lips and then lightly over your eyebrows, so that they are not completely lost.

8. At this stage, you can start to apply the Ice FX crystals. Grab your Duo glue, and apply to the areas where you want your crystals to be. Leave it for a minute so it will become slightly

tacky, and then apply a mixture of small, medium and large crystals.

9. After you have finished putting the ice crystals on, you can start to apply the Swarovski. For

this, use your Duo glue again and stick the crystals in a random fashion onto the face, ears,

neck or wherever you wish.

10. Finish off your look by applying white and blue Aquacolor to the hands - keeping the blue for around the nails; and carefully spraying white hairspray into your hair to add to the frozen appearance.

And voila! As cold as ice…

FAcEON’s Sarah robinson discusses the latest Vampire phenomenon in the UK Make-up world.

At the moment, everyone wants to be a vampire... Why is it so cool to be a ghoul? The term ‘Vampire’ has been around since the 18th century, popularised after an invasion of vampire superstition from Western Europe.

The mythological night walking demon that existed then is the same stereotypical perception we have today; but now modern day civilisation has quite possibly turned the elusive vampire into

a sex symbol.

Vampires have been talked about as early as the 1700s, with a poem entitled ‘The Vampire’. Authors soon picked up on the mystical genre and a craze was soon created. ‘Varney the Vampire’ was written in 1845 and was finished in 1847; the original edition was an impressive length and spawned over 220 chapters. Undoubtedly though, the most famous vampire book probably of all time is Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ written in 1897. Stoker’s epic novel paved the way for all modern adaptations of how we see our typical vampire with their well known attributes, such as fangs, immortality and a strong vulnerability to sunlight.

A mass sense of hysteria soon developed as Vampires were blamed as a cause of the medical

epidemics of Victorian Europe where tuberculosis and syphilis were rife. Corpses were staked and people were being accused of vampirism daily, everyone became a suspect.

Obviously in 2010 we don’t believe that we will be plagued by demons desperately seeking our blood; but we, as a modern culture, continue to be interested in the mystical unknown territory in which we have immersed ourselves. ‘The Vampire Diaries’, ‘The Twilight Saga’ and ‘True Blood’ are all hugely popular television programmes and films which have adorn our books and even our duvet covers.

We as a nation like investigating the unknown and a normal human teenager embracing herself romantically with a vampire just cannot be missed...

Get the Twilight look

Apply a foundation two shades lighter than your own skin tone. You will need to apply an even coverage as it will be a definite difference in colour. Blend with a flat, large brush to avoid a tide line. If you apply too much it may look too fake and foolhardy, you must create a flawless look.

Enhance the look with character lenses such as Devil Red by Colour Vue Crazy Lens. Also Viper and Cat Eyes are amazing, also available from Colour Vue.

Eye make-up

Try the Twilight products for the ultimate look. However, to get the look all you need is a black Kohl pencil under the eye and slightly at the corners on top. Apply a dark brown/black to the socket areas and under the eyes to frame and enhance. You need to create smoulder and mystical which takes practice, particularly if you’re working with a male model. You can add some contouring for a chiselled cheek bone effect with a brown shade applied in the dented part of the face under the cheekbone. On males, this can be very striking.

Teeth

You can purchase fangs or make them with candle wax – and for the truly serious, you can have some built for

you (for a mere £850 each!). We have found a very simple way to achieve the look by using Tooth Black Out, (for that missing tooth effect). You very tactfully paint on a ‘v’ shape to create the fang look. It takes a bit of practice and the taste is certainly not that nice but it leaves a better taste in your mouth that you have not spent a small fortune!

wHITE FAcE IMAGE

For this look your model should preferably have amazing bone structure and clear skin. This is because the white face paint will exaggerate all the lumps and bumps on the face.

CREATING THE LOOK

Face

The face and hair can be created by using face/body paint such as Snazaroo 30ml Face and Body Paint Pot (White). This is applied using a damp sponge and blended with a flat brush. You can comb the paint into the hair to create streaks or apply by hand with a little water for durability.

The eyebrows have been covered with putty and white concealer. Mould the putty and very finely apply to eyebrows. Pat down to secure the even look and paint with white concealer – then continue as normal.

Eyebrows

Liquid eyeliner is a great way to draw on the desired shape and style of the eyebrow. This image shows an interesting wave of the eyebrow that lifts the face. Try Per Una Eyeliner Pen. This is a liquid pen which gives you more control and precision when designing the eyebrows.

Eyelashes-Classy Lashes CF6

Eye

Snazaroo 18 ml Metallic Silver Face Paint. Apply with a fine, hard brush to create the outline and colour with a soft brush. You can create whichever art you desire to the eye area. Try other metallic colours in the Snazaroo also.

lips

Classic red lips are perfect for the paler look in high fashion shoots. Try to create your own shades by mixing different reds. Try Clinique Long Last Lipstick Trio Gift Set. You must remember that when creating such striking white make-up, the lips will be heavily enhanced. Your work must be perfect without any colour bleeding.

Apply concealer to the lips before you apply the lip liner and lipstick - this will create a base for the lipstick to adhere to.

The rest is up to you… practise and play and ultimately, you’ll achieve the perfect Vampire visage!

Fashion Week LookG e t t H e L o n D o n

The look

“At London’s trendy nightspot Amika, I was holding a casting for the opening show of the biggest event of the fashion world - London Fashion Week. I had to look for the perfect models that could portray the look chosen by all the designers that were showcasing their collections at the opening show. Alex Martinez and I were there to cast our eyes on the talent for this year. After many in-depth discussions with all the designers we decided that the make-up look was to be the hugely popular and very fashionable ‘smoky eye’.

The ‘smoky eye’ look was decided on due to its popularity with worldwide fashion editorials and the hundreds of variations of ‘smoky eyes’ we could play with. I decided on using an intense and vibrant blue in the inner corner of the eye to make it appear extreme and pop. The hair that was agreed on was a wild and edgy look and as you can see worked really well. However, due to time constraints on the actual show it was scaled down for the 35 models and wasn’t quite as adventurous. That’s Show Business!”

I used the following products:

“I used one of my all time favourite foundations YSL Tient Majeur (in colour 4) to get the best fresh

complexion for pale skin tones. I complimented the foundation beforehand by carefully enveloping the skin with YSL Primer that leaves the skin feeling vivacious and smooth.

Eyes:

I always find that with any make-up that requires intensity, you have to create a base first; this will give you a much better result without the need to cake it on...so my base was MAC Paint (in architecture).

For the intensity of the black I then used a great product by MUFE. I used Aqua Eyes waterproof eye pencil in black to the crease and the water line and then it was very well blended. To set that in place I used Carbon by MAC on top and continued to blend.

For the intensity of the blue I used MAC (Brushed Metal cream in METALBLU) - everyone was in awe at the great look this gave!

I am a great believer in using a layer of complimentary colours when creating a look; you get depth and also smoothness in the finished result.

I wanted everything to flow without any harsh lines so to help with the blending I used RMK Ingenious Powder (in shiny yellow gold). The subtle luxurious colour really applauds the overall look. The powder is one of those make-up products that I feel

has a multitude of uses, I love it!

Mascara

The designers were insistent that no fake lashes should be used for this look, so to make my lashes appear huge, feminine and doll like, I used lashings of Estee Lauder sumptuous waterproof mascara in black.

Brows

To keep the brows looking neutral I just groomed them using DIORSHOW brow gel.

concealer

Another one of my favourite products from my extensive make-up bag, MUFE High Definition concealer (in colour 330) - it has a great consistency and is hugely hydrating to the eyes.

contouring

On any catwalk with all the lights and flashes from the cameras it is vital to get the contouring right so that the model’s features don’t get lost in all the lights.

A soft contour under the cheekbone and on the temples of the forehead was achieved using CHANEL Creme Bronze Universal. Not only is this a great colour, it simply glides onto the skin easily and effectively.

Just a burst of colour is all that is needed to compliment

the intensity from the eyes so there isn’t any need to overdo it. Firstly, to set some of the cream bronze I used MAC Blush (in Harmony), and then on the apples I used MAC Cream Blush (in Peechykeen) - this was all to be polished over with a sweep of Chanel Natural Finish Powder (in 50 Peche).

lips

No look is complete without the perfect colour lip and on this occasion I felt that nothing other than a natural pale colour would do. I used my favourite pallet ever: New York Pallet from Alcone, (colours LC003 AND LC142) and topped with a hint of natural gloss, I used the extremely cool and contemporary lip-gloss collection from BARRY M (in the colour 2) - they smell delicious too!

A few tips for the catwalk:

When creating ‘the look’, always remember that the skin needs to look alive, so instead of using a setting powder that sometimes will deaden the skin you can use a natural loose luminous powder like Chanel Natural Finish. Not only does this set your make-up but it will give a gorgeous luminosity to the skin.

Create that gorgeous pout by using a highlighter shimmer and run it across the top of the lip at the cupids bow.”

As part of our on-going inspirational stories, in this issue, FACEON talks with a new, innovative creative studio headed by photographer Cristina Carra Caso.“As an aspiring professional photographer, I have had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of many talented and creative people.

I’m originally from Madrid, Spain. I recently relocated to Edinburgh to be with my partner, Matt, who is now our ‘Assistant of Photography’. Matt was the first to inspire me and to help me through my studies to gain my Diploma in Professional Photography.

With an abundance of talented people out there, we continually strive to find the right people to work with. Often we don’t get paid, nor can we pay our team (except on a TFP, time for prints basis), thus we do everything we can to make sure that all involved are delighted with the results.

For this particular set we were joined by the very talented Joy Lowrie as Make-up artist and Hair Stylist. Joy is fully qualified in her trade but again, like us, she’s hoping to make her mark in the industry.

Our model was Adriana Bucur – she’s agency represented, however, she approached us to help her update her modelling portfolio. Having both seen each other’s work, we were all keen to create something special!

The shoot took place in both our studio and on location to ensure we captured a variety of images – focussing on all aspects of body, hair, make-up, styling and accessories.

We’re truly honoured to have our work featured in FACEON Magazine and hope that we have achieved our goal in creating something unique and in fact… exquisite!”
