Faced with Compassion My thoughts have been filled with the faces of many people since our celebration for Josh Rusnak, our DCE who left for seminary training last week. They are the faces of people who supported Josh during his ministry at Prince of Peace. I saw many of those faces during our worship services and picnic, smiling and celebrating, faces of people that I’ve seen on many other occasions laboring alongside Josh in service to children and families at Prince of Peace: Confirmation leaders, Sunday School teachers, Vacation Bible School workers, Living Water singers, the list goes on and on. Staff support also, who have quietly served behind the scenes and prefer it that way, not seeking the limelight but enjoying the ministry. One face that shines brightly in my thoughts is that of Elisa Ferguson, who, along with Joen Schultz and Dieter Stach, assisted Josh on staff. Elisa has taken a new position on the LCMS Southeastern District staff as President Denninger’s assistant, replacing Cindy Hilewitz, who is retiring after serving numerous district presidents. We commend all of them for their service and with Josh, wish them well as they serve the Lord in new ways. My thoughts included another face: John Hanebuth. John is setting out to serve the Lord for a year of service in the mission field of Micronesia, on the Island of Truk. He will be working with children and their families, teaching and helping improve their lives, while displaying the love and faith nurtured in his heart as he grew up here at Prince of Peace. We look forward to hearing regular updates about John from his mother, Mimi Seyferth. Finally, my thoughts included the face of Addie Block, another young adult who grew up here at Prince of Peace. Addie’s charity cycling team will have finished 65 days of their 4000 mile trek from Texas to Anchorage by this Sunday evening. Like John, Addie is sharing her faith by living it out loud. We commend Addie, John, Elisa, Cindy, Josh, and all who serve with all their heart, soul, mind and strength. Written on their faces is the smile of compassion, the outcome of what happens at Prince of Peace. ~Pastor Carl

Welcome to Our New Members!

Prince of Peace welcomes and celebrates 21 new members – 13 adults and eight children -- who were received into membership by transfer during the 11 a.m. worship service last Sunday, July 26th. Special thanks to Linda Harley and her crew who helped provide the delicious food and set-up and clean-up duties for the reception following the service. Thanks, as well, to everyone who contributed in some way to the new member orientation classes. We warmly welcome these new members to our Prince of Peace family! Please take a moment before or after upcoming worship services to get to know them and include them in upcoming church activities. A running video of their pictures and names will be used before all of the worship services in the near future. Please take a look so that you can put names with faces and extend a heartfelt welcome. If you are new to Prince of Peace and would like to consider membership, please watch the Communicator for future newcomer opportunities beginning with the Newcomer Reception on Sunday, September 20th. Finance Team Counters

Needed

The Finance Ministry Team is looking for volunteers for the counting team. We request one Sunday or one Monday a month and it normally does not take more than an hour to an hour and a half. We are also looking for someone to enter data into the computer system. Contact: Tina Velt 703-508-6878 [email protected]

ESL Support Needed

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at PoP benefit the students, their families, and their instructors. The students learn English, which enables them to become good citizens and find higher paying jobs. Because they receive this instruction, they are also provided opportunities to learn about Jesus. The instructors receive the accolades of their very grateful students and the opportunity to share their faith in Jesus. Following are a few facts about ESL: • ESL classes were originally started at Prince of Peace by Karen Salomon and Rob Leonard 11 years ago. We now offer three to four different levels of classes in the daytime on Tuesdays and Fridays and in the evenings on Mondays and Wednesdays. Citizenship classes are also offered and an ESL Sunday School class, taught by Karen Salomon, will begin again this Fall. • This past year, about 125 students participated in the ESL program. This year, we had over 34 countries represented in the ESL program, including Egypt, Bolivia, Ethiopia, South Korea and Burkina Faso. Most of the students are not Spanish-speaking, but rather speak another native language, such as Farsi, Korean, Pashto, or Vietnamese. We invite your involvement in the ESL program in several ways. You can join our outstanding staff of ESL instructors, be a part of our leadership team, and/or financially support the program. You can learn about becoming an instructor or leader by contacting Lori Stillman, [email protected] or 703-451-5855. Unfortunately, the financial needs associated with the ESL program are significant. Although all of our instructors are volunteers, the books required for ESL classes are quite expensive. Individuals taking the classes pay a fee, but it does not cover the full amount for the books since many of these immigrant families have no, or very little, income. That is where we could use your help. Offering ESL classes is an effective way for Prince of Peace to share God’s love and message with our non-English speaking neighbors. However, we need additional funds to continue this heartwarming ministry. We would also like to replace the outdoor signage at Prince of Peace which provides the local community with information on the classes. If you would like to help, please leave a donation in the church office or in a pew envelope during worship services clearly marked “For ESL”. We appreciate your consideration of support for this very special and very important outreach ministry! Contact: 703-451-5855 [email protected]

PoP Haiti Mission Trip

The trip is planned for Thursday, September 17, to Tuesday, September 22, 2015. We have room for 14 people on this mission trip, and several spots remain to be filled. Please pray for the Lord’s guidance on the possibility of your joining us. The total cost of the trip per mission team member (airfare, room and board in Haiti, etc.) is currently about $900, and there are funds available to help defray some of those costs in the event of financial need. Haiti is the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, but many Haitians have great spiritual wealth! A visit to that country can be a life changing experience. If you are interested in learning more please contact Jim Roberts at [email protected].
