FACEFaith Action for Community Equity (FACE) is an interfaith grassroots organi-zation in Hawaii founded in 1996 on Oahu. FACE grew out of a sponsoring committee established in the mid-1990s with the assistance of the Center for Community Change.

FACE exists to allow its members to live out our common, faith-based values by engaging in actions that challenge the systems that perpetuate poverty and injustice. We balance social, economic and community activity with a deep spiritual commitment. Our spiritual centeredness empowers us to re-turn hope and love to the public arena.

FACE organizes on both Maui and Oahu and we currently have a member-ship base of 29 institutions on Oahu, and including Maui, 53 institutions total: Catholic and Protestant churches, Buddhist temples, Jewish synagogues, union locals, resident associations and social service organizations.

FACE interacts with thousands of people on Oahu and Maui and has a base of people who reflect the cultural and socio-economic diversity of our communities.

Aloha FACE leaders and supporters of our work!

Mahalo Nui for your support over the years - with your generous support we have been able to make real and positive changes for the people of Hawaii. In the last year we were able to pass foreclosure reforms that keep local families in their homes, and we have secured affordability for the struggling residents of China-town. We have made a good start on creating parent voices for education. we are building a new health care clinic for Wahiawa and Oahu’s North Shore, and we hope to do more in the next year.

This work is possible only because you have supported it financially. We are grateful for that, and we hope you can fund us again this year.

We encourage you to join us at the next meeting. Keep looking for us in the me-dia. We will continue working to bring the voice of the community into the public square.

Mahalo.

FACE is dedicated to the belief that there is wisdom in ordinary people that can be unlocked to solve seemingly intractable social problems. Our work takes place in the public arena, and impels church leaders to take their values drawn from a multiple of faiths, into the contentious realm.

FACE makes decisions about the issues it works on through a process of direct de-mocracy. Member churches held numerous house meetings – small group discussions about what matters most to its members. The results of these small meetings are com-piled and brought to a meeting to be voted upon, our issues dialogue. For this reason, FACE is truly a grassroots effort, bringing up issues from its membership to be taken up by the whole.

We talk. We listen. We decide.

FACE is an extraordinary organization made up of Catholic and Protestant churches, a Jewish synagogue, a Buddhist temple, a labor union, and civic and resident associations. We gather to work on the common good through the values of hope and love that are shared across all of our religious backgrounds because we know that we have to “walk the talk” as Buddha, Jesus, Jehovah, and Abraham have taught us.

In November 2011, we took inspiration from the Coconut theology developed by Pacific islanders in the 1970s. At this gathering, we challenged the world leaders gathered at APEC to address the needs of the least of us as they met in Hawaii to set policy.

FACE is Interfaith

Over 400 FACE leaders partici-pated in the Interfaith Service at Saint Augustine by the Sea Catholic Church in Waikiki. They gathered at the statue of Prince Kuhio to participate in a table sharing of coconut as a symbol of the island community that we live in, understanding that we are truly one community with many religious traditions that movitate all of us.

In 2011, FACE leaders agreed that holding real discussions around multiple issues would only be possible in a summit event where experts in policy could come together with experts in the community. Both summits took place at the University of Hawaii, Manoa’s Campus Center with the special sponsorship of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.

January 22nd and November 5th were special days where issues of Agriculture, Sustainability, Affordable Housing, Education, Immigration, Jobs and the Economy, Foreclosure, Transit Ori-ented Development, Faith in Public Life, Senior Issues, and others were raised up.

In a response to the growing concern over social and economic equity, and in light of the APEC conference held in Waikiki, FACE and faith leaders held an interfaith service on the first day of APEC with the theme of “In a global economy, the community still matters”.
