A Message from the Facades+ Partners

Welcome to the inaugural Dallas Facades+ conference, symposium, and workshops. The first Facades+ event was hosted in New York City in early 2012, and inspired an ongoing series that, with the Dallas event, will have traversed the nation three times. Each event has grown equally in anticipation, excitement, and participation. This year we touched down in New York City and Chicago before wrapping up the year here in Dallas. We are excited to bring Facades+ to the Great State of Texas! Introduc-ing a novel event at a new venue to a fresh city is both a great challenge and pleasure. We are confident that you will find Facades+ an engag-ing experience, and that together we will create the same intensity of thought, experience, and dialogue that has inspired our past gatherings.

Once again, our volunteer conference chairs, chosen from among your peers, have curated a brilliant speaker program of notable practitioners from various sectors of the AEC industry. These speakers have been very deliberately selected because of their ability to further the Fa-cades+ dialogue, and not because they have paid a fee for the privilege of speaking to you; Facades+ is not a “pay-to-play” conference, and we work diligently to keep the program focused on deep technical content and free from promotional interests. That said, we have a select group of industry-leading sponsors that have stepped up to make Facades+ the success it has become. They have a high profile at the conference venue, and we encourage all of you to spend some time with them and see what they are up to; they have been included as sponsors because they are playing a leading role in the step-change currently underway in building façade technology.

This year our theme is resilience, a term that has been referred to as the new green, and the successor to sustainability. While we interpret our themes in the broadest possible context, we will explore this term, attempting to promote definition beyond the ambiguity of such related vocabulary as sustainability, green, and high-performance. Resilience has come into prominence in the wake of widespread natural disasters of increasing frequency and impact, swelling in the AEC lexicon like a storm surge, and while many grapple for understanding as to a concise mean-ing, the Facades+ events have embraced the term in a robust dialogue that covers all things building skin and beyond. We are excited to bring this dialogue to Dallas, a city that dates its sustainability efforts back to the 1950s and a focus by city leaders on future water supply, a concern with ever increasing relevance in our emerging future.

Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this Dallas event, we are planning our upcoming events for a new year, commencing with a dynamic col-laboration bringing together Facades+ with the University of Southern California’s Façade Tectonics to form a unique Los Angeles conference event we are calling Facades+Tectonics. Lock in the date February 5th and 6th, 2015, for what promises to be the most vibrant building façade related conference event of all time! And, of course, we will be returning to our anchor venue in New York City, scheduled for April 16-17, 2015. We will be announcing our other 2015 conference locations soon, so keep an eye out and plan your schedules accordingly.

As always, we are very much interested in your thoughts on how we might improve the Facades+ experience and assure your continued par-ticipation in our future programs. Talk to us. And please spread the word to join the Facade+ dialogue!

CHARLES CLIFT | CURTAIN WALL DESIGN & CONSULTING, INC.Charles Clift is Senior Principal and President of Curtain Wall Design and Consulting, Inc. (CDC). Charles has worked at CDC in Dallas, Texas

for 34 years providing engineering design for curtain wall and other exterior cladding systems. His Dallas curtain wall experience includes the Hunt Oil HQ, Chase Tower, Comerica Tower and Bank of America Plaza. His work on glare and reflectivity includes the Lotte World HQ a super tall tower in Seoul, Denver International Airport, Hall Arts Office Tower, and Museum Tower on behalf of the Nasher Sculpture Center. Charles is a member of the Dallas City Council’s reflectivity group that has been studying building code proposals to address glare and reflectivity issues. He was named as the Dallas AIA Consultant of the Year in 2010.

DAVID COSSUM | CITY OF DALLASDavid Cossum has worked in municipal development services departments for over 20 years. He is currently Director of Sustainable Development and Construction for the City of

Dallas. In that capacity his responsibilities include overseeing the operations of the Building Inspection, Current Planning, Engineering (private development) and Real Estate divisions. During much of his 15 year tenure working in Dallas, he has had a role in researching and developing zoning regulations and processing amendments to the city’s development codes. David earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and his Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Arlington.

RICKEY CRUM | RTKLRickey Crum is a senior designer in RTKL’s Dallas office. He has an educational background in Aerospace Engineering and Architecture, and graduated with his Masters in Architecture from

ANTOINE PREDOCK | ANTOINE PREDOCK ARCHITECT PCAntoine Predock established his Albuquerque studio in 1967 with his first project, La Luz. After that, Antoine’s work has ranged from Turtle Creek

House to the Padre’s ballpark, and internationally, museums in China, a journalism school in Qatar, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Along the way, he received the Rome Prize and the AIA Gold Medal.

MARLON BLACKWELL | MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTSMarlon Blackwell, FAIA, is an architect in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and serves as Distinguished Professor and Department Head in the Fay Jones

School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. His firm, Marlon Blackwell Architects, has received numerous national and international design awards and significant publication in books and architectural journals.

CHUCK ARMSTRONG | CORGANChuck Armstrong serves as Design Director for Corgan. With over two decades of architectural experience, he has developed an impressive portfolio of healthcare, corporate, retail and

institutional projects worldwide. As one of the firm’s most talented designers, Chuck has led design teams on a variety of complex projects and garnered more than forty awards throughout his career. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Chuck has a bachelor’s degree in architecture, and shares his time and professional expertise with both community organizations and the next generation of designers and real estate professionals through speaking engagements, design review juries and continuing education opportunities.

ZAIDA BASORA | CITY OF DALLASA registered architect and sustainability advocate with over 30 years of experience in design, construction and contracting, Zaida holds a Master of Architecture degree from UT Arlington and

a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Puerto Rico. She began the green building program for Dallas in 2003 resulting in over 40 new sustainable city facilities and a sustainable approach to retrofits. A founding member and 2010 chair of the USGBC North Texas Chapter, she was appointed to GSA’s Office of High Performance Green Building’s Advisory Committee from 2011 to 2013, she serves on the Sustainability Committee of the Texas Society of Architects and is the 2014 Director of Education for Dallas AIA. She was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in January of 2012.

BRAD BELL | TEX-FABBrad Bell is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. He researches and teaches on the integration of advanced digital technologies into the architectural design process

with a focus on the use of digital fabrication and cast materials. He is co-Director of TEX-FAB, a non-profit organization, providing a platform for education on digital fabrication and parametric

GEORGE LOISOS | LOISOS + UBBELOHDENathan Miller is responsible for leading the efforts on computational design strategy, complex modeling, and geometric rationalization at Case. Prior to joining Case, Nathan held the position

of Associate Architectural Designer and Lead Computational Designer at NBBJ, where he focused on the development and implementation of computational design systems for generative design concepts, production efficiency, and building performance.

HEATH MAY | HKS LINE | DALLAS CO-CHAIRHeath May is Director of HKS Laboratory for INtensive Exploration. An architect with 10 years of professional experience including commercial,

hospitality, sports and healthcare, he is currently focused on r+d and the application of this research to the built environment. An avid interest in passive solar design encourages a current LINE research initiative into the potential for using software for dynamic solar design for optimization of complex facades for daylighting and solar performance. In addition to r+d, Heath leads a design team responsible for projects including future:GSA, a net-zero renovation solution that earned the 2012 WAN Commercial Building of the Year Award, and he worked as senior designer on Sustainable Urban Living, a winner of the 2010 Chicago Athenaeum Green Good Design Award. In April of 2013, Heath was named recipient of Building Design + Construction’s 40 under 40.

MIC PATTERSON | ENCLOS | CONFERENCE DIRECTORMic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced façade technology, structural glass facades, and

sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced façade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures, published by Wiley.

JOSEPH PITCHFORD | CRESCENT REAL ESTATE HOLDINGSJoseph F. Pitchford serves as Managing Director, Development, for Crescent Real Estate Equities, LLC. As the firm’s senior development officer, his

responsibilities include project identification, feasibility analysis, design management and execution. He serves on the Boards of the Uptown Dallas, Inc., The Real Estate Council, McKinney Avenue Transit, and ULI Transit Oriented Development Council.

CHRISTIAN PONGRATZ | PONGRATZ PERBELLINI ARCHITECTS/ CYBERSTONE LLCEdward Peck has devoted his career to the making of architecture, building skin technologies, and building systems. He has specialized on

background includes 28 years in residential and commercial facades with accomplishments in strategic business planning, and brand management. Greg’s forte is the ability to understand complex, technical issues and translate them into layman’s terms. For the last 14 years, he has been active in the design, building and marketing of hurricane impact and blast mitigation products. Greg holds a B.S. degree from Southern Illinois University and an M.B.A. from Drake University.

JEFF HABER | W&W GLASSJeff Haber is Managing Partner at W&W Glass, LLC and has been working with structural glass systems for over 20 years. He is directly responsible for sales, marketing, and estimating

NATE HOLLAND | NBBJNate Holland is a digital practice leader at NBBJ’s Seattle office where he works on corporate and commercial projects. He is an active member of the Design computation leadership team where

he helps to shape the direction of the firm’s computational strategy. He holds a Masters in Architecture and an MBA from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He focuses on design computation and digital fabrication through the use of Grasshopper, Dynamo and other tools to conceive, study and rationalize complex geometries.

MATT JEZYK | AUTODESKMatt Jezyk is Senior Product Line Manager for AEC Conceptual Design Products. Matt leads a team developing a suite of new technologies for the AEC industry. His development teams have

created multiple new applications: Autodesk Vasari, a popular Autodesk Labs project now in public beta, and Autodesk FormIt, the 1st architectural form modeler on the iPad. Matt and his group also contribute code to the open-source Dynamo Visual Programming tool for Revit and Vasari.

GREGG JONES | PELLI CLARKE PELLIGregg Jones joined Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects in 1979. He has been the principal in charge for numerous high-rise office, residential and hotel buildings. These works include Porta Nuova

Garibaldi, which includes the Unicredit Headquarters in Milan; International Finance Centre in Hong Kong; and ARIA Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

he is responsible for overall strategic direction in the USA where he has fostered a culture based on innovation and emerging technologies with a vision to add value to the built environment through advanced product development and exceptional business practice. A graduate of the State University of New York, he is a current member of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the Construction Specifications Institute since 1993 where he holds CDT certification. In August 2012, Oliver was listed as one of the most influential people in the glass and metal industry by US Glass Magazine.

JEREMY STRICK | NASHER SCULPTURE CENTERJeremy Strick is Director of the Nasher Sculpture Center where he oversees collections, exhibitions, and operations. He has been

responsible for the presentation of groundbreaking exhibitions and programs; including Nasher XChange, Sightings, 360 Lectures and Soundings. He held posts at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Art Institute of Chicago, The Saint Louis Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art.

element analysis of glass structures. John is a member of ASTM glass design groups including chairing the Glass Walkways Task Group.

ALFONSO LOPEZ | SENTECH ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMSAlfonso Lopez is the founder and CEO of Sentech Architectural Systems. As a structural engineer, Alfonso has dedicated his career to

collaborating with architects in the development and use of emerging technologies in the design of large architectural venues and facades. His design work covers a wide range of projects and structural system applications; the common thread to his projects is the use of best practices and innovation in the fields of structural glazing, tension structures, and clear-span system design.

HEATH MAY | HKS LINE | DALLAS CO-CHAIRHeath May is Director of HKS Laboratory for INtensive Exploration. An architect with 10 years of professional experience including commercial, hospitality, sports and healthcare, he is currently

focused on r+d and the application of this research to the built environment. An avid interest in passive solar design encourages a current LINE research initiative into the potential for using software for dynamic solar design for optimization of complex facades for daylighting and solar performance. In addition to r+d, Heath leads a design team responsible for projects including future:GSA, a net-zero renovation solution that earned the 2012 WAN Commercial Building of the Year Award, and he worked as senior designer on Sustainable Urban Living, a winner of the 2010 Chicago Athenaeum Green Good Design Award. In April of 2013, Heath was named recipient of Building Design + Construction’s 40 under 40.

MICHEL MICHNO | CH HOLDINGSMichel Michno has thirty plus years of diverse experience in the façade and ornamental metals industries, having served in an executive capacity for such leading companies as Voisin, Wausau

BRAD BELL | TEX-FABBrad Bell is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. He researches and teaches on the integration of advanced digital technologies into the architectural design

process with a focus on the use of digital fabrication and cast materials. He is co-Director of TEX-FAB, a non-profit organization, providing a platform for education on digital fabrication and parametric modeling to the professional, academic and manufacturing communities in Texas. He is also a Principal at TOPOCAST LAB.

SAMUEL BRISSETTE | SNØHETTASamuel Brissette is a designer at Snøhetta’s New York office, a 50-person interdisciplinary design studio which takes an integrative approach to architecture, landscape, and interior architecture.

Since beginning at Snøhetta, Samuel has been influential to the design of several notable projects including the current expansion of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has also worked on the Ryerson University Student Learning Center in Toronto which is nearing completion, and is currently working on a new 236,000 sqf public library for the city of Calgary which will be completed in 2018.

CHARLES CLIFT| CURTAIN WALL DESIGN & CONSULTING, INC.Charles Clift is Senior Principal and President of Curtain Wall Design and Consulting, Inc. (CDC). Charles has worked at CDC in Dallas, Texas

for 34 years providing engineering design for curtain wall and other exterior cladding systems. His Dallas curtain wall experience includes the Hunt Oil HQ, Chase Tower, Comerica Tower and Bank of America Plaza. His work on glare and reflectivity includes the Lotte World HQ a super tall tower in Seoul, Denver International Airport, Hall Arts Office Tower, and Museum Tower on behalf of the Nasher Sculpture Center. Charles is a member of the Dallas City Council’s reflectivity group that has been studying building code proposals to address glare and reflectivity issues. He was named as the Dallas AIA Consultant of the Year in 2010.

DAVID DUNHAM | SENTECH ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMSDavid Dunham is a registered PE and has worked in the structural glass industry since 2010. He works preconstruction at Sentech Architectural

Systems and assists designers across North America in developing customized structural glass systems using the latest design, manufacturing, and installation techniques. David is based in Northern California.

EMILIE HAGEN | ATELIER TENEmilie Hagen, Associate Director of Atelier Ten’s San Francisco office, is an expert in daylighting, resiliency, net zero water and energy, and carbon management. She has contributed to projects

ranging from one of the largest and most complex net zero energy buildings in the U.S. to the first LEED Gold certified commercial gallery.

KERENZA HARRIS | MORPHOSISKerenza Harris currently works on the design and system integration of complex façade systems for Morphosis Architects. Her primary focus is to develop automation systems and parametric tools

SUSAN UBBELOHDE | LOISOS + UBBELOHDESusan Ubbelohde is a principal of Loisos + Ubbelohde and Professor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work in daylighting spans three decades, including physical

modeling, artificial sky design, software validation and calibration as well as design and consulting on award winning museums, schools, libraries and laboratories.

JAMES WARTON | RESEARCH CENTER FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING (RCAM), LYLE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING / SMUJames is a Ph.D. student and researcher based within the Research Center for Advanced

Manufacturing at SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering. He received his Masters of Architecture from the Architectural Association’s Design Research Laboratory. His research centers on node-based architectural structures and the integration of powder-fed direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) with robotized manufacturing systems.

JOSHUA ZABEL | KREYSLER & ASSOCIATESJosh is the Director of Digital Fabrication at Kreysler & Associates, a world-class composites fabrication facility. He has been there since 2005 and has been managing the digital aspects of every project.

He has developed an expert understanding of composites, and is at the forefront of AEC industry efforts to maximize their architectural potential.

GIL AKOS | MODELAB | TECH WORKSHOPS COORDINATORGil Akos is a founding partner and Director of Technology at Mode Lab, a multi-disciplinary design and technology consulting firm based in New

York City. He brings technical expertise, diverse professional experience, and a passion for generative systems to the design, consulting, and educational initiatives of Mode Lab. Gil holds both a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University. He has been a faculty member at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture since 2007.

PAUL FERRER | HKS LINEPaul Ferrer is a graduate of Texas A&M University and a designer at HKS. Within LINE, Paul’s primary research is focused on bridging the gap between simulation/analytical models and the

built environment.

ERICK KATZENSTEIN | MODELABErick is a Senior Technology Specialist at Mode Lab, a multidisciplinary design and consulting firm in New York, where his main focus is on technology in conversation with architectural theory and

process. Erick has three years of experience in design technology research, and has previously worked with LMN Tech Studio and HKS. He specializes in parametric modeling, environmental simulation, and data visualization.

JAMES C PARKER | SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGERJames Parker, SE, has twenty-nine years of experience in structural design and investigation of building structures and facades, and leads

structural engineering for Simpson Gumpertz & Heger’s Southern California offices. He has spoken frequently about the concept of “seismic sustainability,” emphasizing the important role of resilience for the sustainable built environment. James has designed and been engineer of record for structures and enclosures for all types of projects from laboratories to museums to multi-housing. He has worked to establish priorities for seismic rehabilitation and risk mitigation for clients on projects throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He is also the author of the AISC Design Guide 22, Facade Attachments to Steel-Framed Buildings.

MIC PATTERSON | ENCLOS | CONFERENCE DIRECTORMic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced façade technology, structural glass facades, and

sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced façade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures, published by Wiley.

EDWARD PECK | THORNTON TOMASETTIEdward Peck has devoted his career to the making of architecture, building skin technologies, and building systems. He has specialized on projects involving sustainable and innovative building skins,

as a design architect, a technical consultant and as a design technical leader of an ETFE design/manufacturing firm. Currently he is a Vice President in the Building Skin Practice at Thornton Tomasetti working as a design / engineering consultant for building skins on projects around the world.

LUKE SMITH | ENCLOS | DALLAS CO- CHAIRLuke Smith is a Senior Designer at the Advanced Technology Studio of Enclos, where he collaborates with architectural design teams in early project conception, design-assist contracts, and building

skin realization. Prior to joining Enclos, Luke worked at Front Inc. and Shop Construction in New York City, and Make Architects in London. He has extensive experience in Direct-To-Fab technology, working with parametric modeling tools to implement innovative facade fabrication and assembly on large scale projects. Luke studied in Oxford and Paris, before attaining a Masters in Architecture from Princeton University.

Z SMITH | ESKEW+DUMEZ+RIPPLEZ Smith has been involved in nationally published sustainability research and design for the past ten years. He has served as a Project Architect for carbon neutral, net-zero energy and net-zero

water use buildings. He brings an approach of scientific rigor to green design in community, educational, and institutional projects, reducing energy consumption. Z is also a frequent public speaker on sustainable design issues, a member of the

MOHAMMAD RAHMANI ASL | AUTODESKMohammad started his collaboration with Building Performance Analysis team at Autodesk, Inc. May 2013 as contractor. He is a PhD candidate in the Department of Architecture at Texas A&M

University and has been a member of BIM-SIM Group since 2010. He has a lot of experience in Building Energy Simulation and Optimization and has been involved in BPA customer engagement projects.

ANDREW VRANA | METALABAndrew Vrana is a Principal Architect at Metalab based in Houston that integrates expertise in digital design and fabrication with architecture, civic art and product design. He is a Visiting Assistant Professor

at University of Houston College of Architecture. He is co-director of TEX-FAB *Digital Fabrication Alliance.

BIM. Colin studied architecture at Cornell University and worked for three years there on advancing software tools for energy analysis in early stage design.
