Make Your Own Heirloom Quilts

Did you know that there are over 16 million quilters in the United States? And more around the world! In each decade, more and more people discover the joy of making quilts – whether that is a small wall hanging or a bed-size quilt. Fabric Essentials can help you create beautiful, heirloom quilts for yourself, your friends, and your family!

What is an Heirloom Quilt?

Generally we think of heirloom quilts as those made of high-quality fabric that will last a long time and be appreciated by many generations to come. The term is also applied to any antique quilt that has been handed down from generation to generation. Making an heirloom quilt is an investment of your time and money, and we have designed our programs to help you be successful!

How Is the Fabric Essentials’ Flexible BOM Different from Other Programs?

Taking a cue from the Frank Sinatra song, "I'll Have it My Way", we believe that a BOM program should work around your life rather than fitting your life around a rigid BOM program.

Just tell us what works for you - when you want to start, how many blocks you want per month - and we'll work with you!

Want 2 blocks per month? You got 'em! Want 3 blocks every two months? Done! Need to change your schedule? No problem! Want to purchase the entire quilt kit and save on shipping? The answer is "Yes"!

Fabric Essentials offers the most comprehensive and flexible Block-of-the-Month programs in the world!

What about dye lots?

We buy all our fabric up front and cut complete kits in advance. When we cut quilt backs, we cut your pieces from the same bolt. Your colors will always match!

Will my quilt look like the picture?

Yes! We use all original fabrics, so your quilt will look like the picture you see. If there is a rare case (it’s not happened yet!) where a substitution is made, we would make this very clear up front, and show you a picture of both the original fabric and the replacement fabric so you would know exactly what to expect.

What is a Block-of-the-Month Program (BOM)?

It’s basically a way to create a beautiful quilt on a monthly installment plan! Each month you’ll receive a package that includes the pattern and fabric for a portion of your quilt. You’ll cut and sew a few hours each month, and by the end of the program you’ll have made a beautiful quilt! You’ll love getting a package of fabric in the mail each month – a regular present to yourself!

Page 5: Fabric Essentials 2015 vol 1 - Make Your Own Heirloom Quilts!

How do I know that I’ll get everything I have signed up for?

It’s in the Bag! Before you start a program with Fabric Essentials, we cut your entire kit and put it in a bag with your name on it! We do the same with backing. It’s cut at the beginning and your name goes on the bag. You never have to worry that we will run out of fabric and you can’t finish your quilt or get the backing you want.

Fabric Essentials offers the most comprehensive and flexible Block of the Month programs in the world!

Bottom Line: You are guaranteed to get everything you signed up for – and more! Call us at +1-785-243-4044 or email us at [email protected] to discuss your requirements and we'll get you on your way!

What about Shipping?

We offer you flexibility! Take as few or as many blocks per month, or even a complete kit! Many people like 2-3 blocks every month, others prefer 2-3 blocks every two months. Grouping your shipments will save you money! It’s totally up to you! And if you want to go on a quilt retreat and need more blocks, you simply call us to get more! It’s already cut and waiting for you! We work with International Customers to figure out what will fit into flat rate envelopes and boxes to minimize shipping costs overseas.

What do I get with my Fabric Essentials program?

You’ll Get Practically Everything Except a Sewing Machine! Your kits will include the pattern; all original fabrics for the quilt top, borders, and binding; generous fabric cuts and/or Boo-Boo bundles of extra fabric.

Exclusive Cutting Diagrams & Plenty of Fabric! You’ll receive our exclusive cutting diagrams that reduce cutting mistakes by showing you how to cut your fabric. Even if you make a mistake, there’s enough fabric to keep going!

No seams in Your Outer Borders! We think seams in beautiful outer borders look tacky, so we provide enough fabric for you to cut them length of fabric (LOF).

Backing is Included! We calculate enough coordinating backing so there is 4-6” extra all the way around, as most long-arm quilters prefer; in the case of 45” fabric for backing, we cut that into three equal pieces to make it easier for you to work with.

Exclusive Larger Sizes! We create larger sizes for popular patterns. No matter what size bed you have, we can help you create the perfect look!

Bottom Line: No other BOM program offers all this! You are guaranteed to get everything you signed up for – and more!

I’ve sewn before, but have never made a quilt. Can a beginner make one of these quilts?

Absolutely! We select our quilt patterns from designers who write really great patterns, and many are suitable for beginning quilters. In addition, Fabric Essentials creates visual cutting diagrams that show you – in pictures – what sizes to cut your pieces. We also make sure that you have enough extra fabric in case of mistakes. We can recommend the tools you’ll need to be successful – rotary cutters, rulers, and cutting mats.

Aunt Grace Simpler Sampler Vicki Bellino for Bloom Creek Original Size: 64" x 71" Fabric Essentials Exclusive Queen Size: 86" x 93" Fabric Essentials Exclusive King Size: 102" x 109" Vicki Bellino's Aunt Grace BOM pattern was designed using a pre-printed panel of blocks that are traditionally English paper pieced or appliquéd. The pieced blocks are simple, yet the layout of this quilt gives the appearance of a much more complex quilt.

Amish With A Twist I Nancy Rink Designs Finished Size: 88 3/8" x 105 1/2" Fabric Essentials Exclusive King Size: 105 1/2" x 105 1/2" Inspired by classic Amish quilts, Amish With A Twist I is a set of lessons designed especially for the beginning quilter. The colors and finish of the cotton were carefully planned for an authentically Amish effect.

This 15-part workshop approach focuses on the basics, with twelve lessons on the basic shapes common to quilting and three finishing lessons that include making the block "frames", adding the appliqué on the corners, and completing the sashing, borders, and binding.

Choose the Queen size or the Fabric Essentials Exclusive Square King size. These quilts can be made using any Marcus Centennial background color. Several choices are shown on the next page.

Customers Say… I got your package yesterday, and

I was simply floored! Wow!

I showed my husband the two

complete BOM's I had received

from you and the other quilt shop.

His reply was "no comparison"!

I love the backing fabric. And the

finishing kit was also a surprise for

me. It was like Christmas! Thank

you again for the thoughtful way

your run your program. I brag to

my friends what a great deal your

BOM program is. I'm going to

share this with my quilt guild

tomorrow and show them how

generous your program is.

A forever customer, Carolyn P

Choose Your Colors! Choose Your Size! You can choose any Marcus Centennial Solid for your background and backing. The quilt, as designed, has goldenrod piping and a Turkey Red Binding. Although black is the most popular backing color, how about Turquoise or Red? Now…Queen or King?

Amish With A Twist II: The Classics Nancy Rink Designs Finished Size: 105" x 105" Amish With A Twist II: The Classics draws inspiration for both the block designs and color palette from quilts that are considered to be quintessentially Amish by quilt lovers and collectors. This quilt is designed for both the beginner and experienced quilter, with technique builders and installments that progress in the level of difficulty. This popular quilt is back by demand!

Exclusive Cutting Diagrams and Boo-Boo Bundle!

Have you ever been working on a quilt and made a cutting mistake and then discovered that you don't have enough fabric to fix it? In order to help with these common problems, we have developed exclusive cutting diagrams to minimize cutting errors, and we also include a Boo-Boo bundle of Fat 8ths as a backup with most projects. Each block you receive will contain a visual guide showing the best way to cut your pieces from the fabric in the kit. Many times you must also use this same fabric in a future block. Without a visual guide you must keep your fingers crossed that you haven't cut your fabric in such a way to be short down the road. Even if you do get distracted and make an error, your Boo-Boo bundle will save the day (or the night)! You can keep on going no matter what. This is truly "piece of mind" (pun intended). P.S. Your Boo-Boo bundle can also be used to make decorative pillows, table runners and whatever else you might dream up!

Customers Say… I just opened the box last night and went

through the patterns and material. Oh, my gosh,

your cutting layouts are wonderful! Even my husband was impressed

- he said it looks like wood worker patterns.

And your directions are so clear. I think I might need to take a trip

Kansas to see your shop.

Elegance – Two Colorstories! Chris Hoover for Whirligig Designs Finished Size: 100" x 100" The next page shows the blocks you will make in this Block-of-the-Month program using the Sophia collection by Blank Quilting. Isn't it nice to have such unusual blocks? This will be fun to make! In this program, the first block is made using simple foundation piecing, and we include all foundation papers in your kit. Another unusual feature of this design is how it uses a Border print to make the final setting blocks!

Choose the Pink & Grey or the Black Colorstory…or make one of each!

Hampton Ridge Paula Barnes for Red Crinoline Quilts Finished Size: 88" x 88" Very Limited Supplies! We recently cut a limited number of Hampton Ridge kits – using all the original fabrics! This popular program has already sold out several times, and luckily we were able to acquire the last bolts of fabric Marcus had in order to cut more kits. If you like Civil War quilts, you won’t want to miss this one!

The simple layout shows off the variety of the prints. The light print used to frame the 5-inch blocks is also used for the sashing, giving the blocks a delicate floating effect. The print patterns and colors create sampler-style blocks that are varied, yet cohesive.

Each month you will receive patterns for four or five 7 1/2" finished blocks. We have found that we can generally ship three months of blocks for about the same price as one month, so we recommend multiple block shipments. You can have 2 or 3 blocks ship monthly, every other month, or every three months. Or, order the complete kit!

What are Star Singles?

Star Singles are Half-Square Triangle Papers that are easy to use with squares of fabric. The triangle paper lays flat - no curling! Simply sew on the dotted lines and cut on the solid lines! Presto! Each Star Single makes Eight Half-Square Triangle Blocks! Your Fabric Essentials program includes over 125 Star Singles papers in the sizes you need for Hampton Ridge. This is a few more than you actually need, but we figure having a few extra is a good thing..."just in case"! Bottom Line: Make Perfect Half-Square Triangles every time!

Backing with a Difference! As with all Fabric Essentials BOM programs, we provide backing for your beautiful quilt. Many quilt patterns do not allow enough, in our opinion. We estimate the amount needed so you’ll have enough extra all the way around for your longarm quilting. For all 45” fabric, we cut your backing into three equal pieces to make it easier for you to handle.

The Wing and a Prayer patterns are well written and use the popular technique of making larger block segments, then cutting them down to perfection.

No Seams in Fabric Essentials’ Outer Borders! Most shops economize by providing only enough fabric for Width of Fabric (WOF), pieced borders. This is OK for narrow or tonal borders. However, at Fabric Essentials, we have a “No Seam” policy when it comes to outer borders. Look at this beautiful border fabric used in the Moonlight Sonata quilt. We think it would be an injustice to have two seams in this outer border, so we provide enough extra fabric for you to cut your border strips lengthwise!

Customers Say… From a Yelp Review: I am doing a Block of the Month (BOM) program with them through the mail. I am about halfway through it and I am thoroughly impressed with this shop. The program organization is very well thought out and executed. I feel I am receiving the same level of attention and service that I would if I were actually in the store. For all the BOM programs, the shop prepares a cutting guide for each month's kit so you know they have reviewed the pattern in detail before their customers have ever seen it. Second, they cut your whole kit at the beginning of your program so there's never a delay in the middle of things. I know that the remaining months of my BOM are cut, labeled and ready to be shipped to me so I will receive them on time. In addition, cutting the whole quilt at one time means the dye lots of the fabric match. Third, their BOM programs include a boo-boo bundle. Mistakes happen and I appreciate having that little insurance. Fourth, their BOMs include coordinated backing. I don't particularly enjoy figuring out what to put on the back of a quilt so not having to think about that is a big plus to me. I also appreciate that they are very flexible in how they ship the kits. Since they've cut everything ahead of time, they can send the kits two at a time, three at a time, all at once, whatever you want, whenever you want. You're not limited to whatever a shop has decided to do - one kit per month being a typical program (hence the name). In my case, I am getting three blocks at a time every three months. It has worked very well for me and has also saved a bundle on postage. After I placed my order (online), the shop owner called me later to go over the details and tailor the program to what would work best for me. She was very friendly, very clearly knew her business, and I felt valued as a customer and quilter. This is the kind of experience I want to have with a quilt shop and I will definitely be doing more business with Fabric Essentials. Sara H
