Malcolm Arnolds score to David Leans 1954 film, HobsonsChoice, was one of three collaborations between thecomposer and director. Its a story of Henry Hobson, playedby Charles Laughtan who runs a successful bootmakers shopin nineteenth-century Salford. A widower with a weakness forthe pub, he tries forcefully to rule the lives of his three unrulydaughters.

Peterloo is the derisive name given to an incident thathappened on16thAugust 1819 in St Peters Fields, Manchester,when an orderly crowd of some 80,000 people met to hear aspeech on political reform. This overture attempts to portraythese happenings.

Sweeney Todd arr. Littlemore

Malcolm Arnolds ballet, Sweeney Todd, was first staged in1959 by The Royal Ballet Company with choreography byJohn Cranko. The music was later adapted as a concert workand it is from this version that this brass band arrangement,by Phillip Littlemore, is made. The original concert suite lastssome 20 minutes, but this version has been shortened to amore manageable eight minutes.

Benjamin Britten

Occasional Overture

Benjamin Britten composed his OccasionalOverture, Op.38, forthe opening of the BBC Third Programme on 29 thSeptember1946, when it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra

under Sir Adrian Boult. It was not heard again until 1982,when the composers Executors decided that it should berevived. Given the dominance of brass and woodwind in thisconcise but exciting work, versions for brass band and windband have been prepared for Brittens centenary year.

Dave Brube ck

Take Five arr. Sykes

The classic jazz number Take Fivewas first recorded by theDave Brubeck Quartet and released on its 1959 album TimeOut. Composed by Paul Desmond, the groups saxophonist, itbecame famous for its distinctive, catchy melody and use ofquintuple time, from which the piece got its name. This brassband arrangement, by Steve Sykes, captures the jaunty slantof the original.



Unsquare Dance arr. Freeh

Dave Brubeck, the American jazz pianist, has contributed ahuge amount of material to the genre, responsible for manytitles now so often referred to as jazz standards. His UnsquareDance (in 7/4 time) of 1961 has been expertly arranged forbrass band by Mark Freeh.

Pentacle

Pentaclewas selected as a test piece for the National BrassBand Championships of Great Britain, First Section regional

competition in 2009. The Pentacle is an image of an uprightfive-pointed star drawn inside a circle with a single continuousline making the five points equally spaced. Traditionally, eachof the five angles has been attributed to the five metaphysicalelements of the ancients. These provide the titles for the fivesections of the piece: Earth(representing stability and physical

endurance), Wind (representing intelligence and the arts),Fire(representing courage and daring), Water(representingemotions and intuition) and Quintessence(which representsthe All and the Divine spirit).

The Keystone Kops was a series of silent comedies featuring anincompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the1912 film HoffmeyersLegacybut it was the 1913 feature TheBangville Policethat confirmed their popularity. The Keystone

Kops were renowned for making mistakes, particularly witha great deal of energy and activity, and all done with a majorlack of coordination. Carl Daviss energetic theme provides afitting musical portrait of a silverscreen phenomenen.

Another Worlds Hell

Another Worlds Hell was commissioned in versions forbrass, wind and fanfare bands by the Socit Cantonaledes Musiques Vaudoises and the Association Cantonale desMusiques Neuchteloises for the 2013 Swiss Cantonalesfestivals. It is inspired by a passage in Aldous Huxleys classic1932 science-fiction novel Brave New World, which describesin unusually close detail the music that is being played ata dance. This is Dobsons interpretation of the imaginedfuture music that Huxley dreamed of.

Lyonesse

Lyonessewas commissioned by the Brass Band Heritage Trustas the test piece for the Finals of the National Youth BrassBand Championships held in Manchester in April 2005. Thisatmospheric music, ideal as a test piece for First and Secondsection bands, takes its inspiration from the lost kingdom ofLyonesse, the mythical spur of land linking Cornwall and theScilly Isles, and its associated legend of Tristan and Isolde.

Penlee

To some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, SolomonBrowne, would need no introduction, and to some the painfelt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a fewweeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981,has created this work as a musical homage to the braveryof the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to theirmemory. Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall YouthBrass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett.The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth BrassBand, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michaels Church,Newquay, on 30th December 2008. Penleewas voted into theClassic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at no.106. Not only is it the firsttime a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame, but itwas also the highest new entry.



The Dreaded Groove and Hook

This up-tempo acid-jazz number draws inspiration frombands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. Thegroove in question is the main tune that is shared round theband, whilst the hook, in pop terms, is the catchy bit of thesong. The whole band joins in to play a huge riff that acts asa chorus to the jazz-like verses.

The Drop: Remixed

Originally commissioned as the set test piece for Section B ofthe 2007 European Brass Band Championships, The Drop wasre-worked and extended as The Drop: Remixed for LeylandBand to perform at the 2008 RNCM Festival of Brass inManchester. Infernal Ride

Infernal Rideis mercurial and virtuosic, reflecting the mad-capchase of Ichabod Cranes final ride on his horse, Gunpowder,in the story by Washington Irving, namely The Legend ofSleepy Hollow. Masquehas been transcribed for brass band from HeskethsScherzo for Orchestra, commissioned by the NationalChildrens Orchestra in 1987. Whirlegigg

Whirlegigg is the middle English word for a contraption thatcontinuously spins. A great fascination with many inventorsof the medieval period was to develop a perpetual motionmachine constantly turning and giving off energy. This idea isparticularly apt for this piece. A simple ternary structure givesample opportunity for both boisterous and reflective materialwith gyrating accompaniment figures never far away. The

machine almost stops near the end, but finally musters onelast burst of excitement and energy to bring the work to itsclose.

Nigel Hess

A Thames Journey

A Thames Journeyfollows the river Thames from its origins as afew drops of water in Wiltshire, to the point where it meets theopen sea at Greenwich. Hess draws upon many musical links

along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody, morrisdancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire andstreet songs in London. With such rich and diverse sourcesof music across several counties and centuries, this has quiteunderstandably become one of Hesss most popular works todate.

New London Pictures

New London Pictures represents elements of London in the21st Century. The Millennium Bridgedescribes the pedestriansjourney across this wonderful new landmark bridge over theThames, starting at the imposing Tate Modern, crossing thebusy river, and onwards to St. Pauls Cathedral with its bellsringing out over the great city. London Eye is an incrediblylarge ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the RiverThames. This movement depicts a flight on this riversidewheel, at the top of which the panoramic view of Londonis breath-taking and the expanse of the music is a suitabledepiction of the view. As with all modern cities, London isover-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first majorcity in Europe to adopt a Congestion Charge, and this piece(with its stop and go traffi c lights) is both racy and comical.

Shelter Island

Shelter Islandis the first movement of East Coast Pictures. It is adepiction of the Shelter Island itself, a few hours drive east ofNew York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap;but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely facesthe onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mistsand driving rain. This picture is a fond memory of a winterweekend on Shelter Island.



The Catskills

The Catskillsis one of Nigel HesssEast Coast Picturesand wascommissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra.This suite, arranged here for brass band, has become amodern classic.

Its three movements contrast the extrovert andlyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare withwhich the work opens involves the whole cornet section. Thesecond movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhatpensively on muted brass, and building to an emotionalclimax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord.The finale is a fast dance, which with a final recapitulation ofthe opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.

Keystone Kops

The Keystone Kopswas a series of silent comedies featuring anincompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the1912 film Hoffmeyers Legacy but it was the 1913 feature TheBangville Policethat confirmed their popularity. The KeystoneKops were renowned for making mistakes, particularly witha great deal of energy and activity, and all done with a majorlack of coordination. Carl Daviss energetic theme provides afitting musical portrait of a silverscreen phenomenon.

Vranjanka

Premiered on 6th

November 2005, at the RNCM InternationalWind Festival, Vranjankais loosely based on the traditionalfolksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions,one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. Hesketh chooses the version in7/8 and has extended the melodic ideas of the original withnew material. The musical form of the piece is as follows; afairly slow introductory section where the theme is onlyhinted at but never heard and a faster second section cast ina set of variations on the folksong. These are not variationsin the traditional sense, with clearly marked beginnings andendings, but ongoing developments of the various melodicmaterial in the folksong with original material growing outalong side. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy andHilary Reynish in memory of their son William.



Whirlegigg

Whirlegiggis the middle English word for a contraption thatcontinuously spins. A great fascination with many inventorsof the medieval period was to develop a perpetual motion

machine constantly turning and giving off energy. This idea isparticularly apt for this piece. A simple ternary structure givesample opportunity for both boisterous and reflective materialwith gyrating accompaniment figures never far away. Themachine almost stops near the end, but finally musters onelast burst of excitement and energy to bring the work to itsclose.

A Thames Journey

A Thames Journey follows the river Thames from its origins, asa few drops of water in Wiltshire, to the point where it meetsthe open sea at Greenwich. Hess draws upon many musicallinks along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody,morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire

and street songs in London. With such rich and diverse sourcesof music across several counties and centuries, this has quiteunderstandably become one of Hesss most popular works todate.



Congestion Charge

This is the third movement of Nigel Hesss New London Pictures(a sequel to his successful London Pictures). As with all moderncities, London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. Londonwas the first major city in Europe to adopt a CongestionCharge, and this lighthearted work includes musical imagesof frustrated rush hour traffi c leading to a freer flowing galop.



East Coast Pictures

East Coast Pictures was commissioned by the British YouthWind Orchestra with funds from the National WestminsterBank plc. These three short pictures were inspired by severalvisits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area thatprovides great extremes in the geography and the people.

Shelter Island
