Dinners in the Homes started nearly ten years ago as a fundraising project for Fairbanks Arts Association. The program was created to integrate travelers with the local community by providing a unique and authentic Alaskan p e o p l e - t o - p e o p l e experience. In 2009 the tour company that featured this exceptional option for travelers canceled their request. However, FAA is pleased to announce that we will begin the program again this year. With only one date in August for 42 guests, we are off to a small start with a new tour company-John Hall’s of Alaska- but are very hopeful that we will be able to continue to expand the program for many summers to come.

The program is simple; out of town visitors are picked up at their hotel by their host’s and taken to the hosts home for dinner. In exchange, the Fairbanks Arts Association receives $35.00 per person. The funds that are raised benefit the Fairbanks Arts Community and help to support the Fairbanks

Arts Association programs. For many visitors, this event is the highlight of their

Alaskan experience and offers a genuine glimpse of Fairbanks. Hosts and visitors alike have responded with letters telling of the friendships and connections they made.

In years past hundreds of volunteers like you

have helped to make this program a success. Because of our small numbers this year, we won’t be able to utilize all those who have generously offered their help. Instead, Fairbanks Arts Association would like to invite you to participate by contributing $35 or more, the same amount received per person participating in Dinners in the Home. These donations go far to help further the reach of Fairbanks Arts Association.

We hope that if you are not called this summer, you will continue to keep Fairbanks Arts Association in your mind as we move forward and continue to grow this wonderful program.

For many visitors, this event is the highlight of their

Alaskan experience and offers a genuine glimpse of Fairbanks.

Fairbanks Arts Association was established in 1966 to promote and support the arts in the Fairbanks area. The Association is funded by private, corporate, and foundation memberships and donations, City of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. With assistance from professional staff and charitable volunteers, the Association provides services in five areas: Visual, Literary, Performing, Community Arts and Arts Education. FAA also helps to raise funds for other arts groups, provides technical assistance and support for arts programing, encourages and advises individual artists and beginning organizations, sponsors workshops and presents educational forums.

Alaska Junior Theater is a private, nonprofit organization that has been bringing the best in professional theater from around the world to Alaska’s young audiences for more than 29 years. Each year, more than 40,000 students attend a variety of live performances, which share the common educational goal of “bringing learning to life.” For many students, AJT’s school-

time presentations are their only exposure to the performing arts. Each show we present has a strong educational theme. Our shows are often able to inspire many students who cannot be reached in a more traditional classroom setting.

Teachers also rely on our study guides to prepare their students for what they will see and to create classroom projects in history, social studies, geography, science and other fields. To augment our performances, we offer teacher and student performing arts workshops and master classes whenever they are available. For more information, please visit http://www.akjt.org/

Sue Ann Bowling earned an A.B in Physics from Harvard/Radcliffe in 1963, and a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1970. Her dissertation was on ice fog (which isn’t found just anywhere). She stayed at the University of Alaska’s Geophysical Institute until she retired in 1998. (Yes,

it was an early retirement, but she was having vision problems at the time and could not drive to work reliably.)

She wrote quite a lot in her years at UAF, not only professional papers, but science popularizations and articles on canine history. On retirement, she added considerably to her websites on Shetland Sheepdogs and genetics, and began playing with fiction. She’s also kept up an interest in gardening (at least in summer!) She’s also into animals, snowflakes and space. (She taught a beginning astronomy class a few times.) In addition to her regular writings she’s written a sequel as well as a trilogy. Maybe she’ll publish them someday, too.

Trilby Cannon i s a F a i r b a n k s au thor. She i s currently writing a book that explores multiple dimensions of a young woman in Ireland. Some of her other works include Trepidation and Tepid Tea, a romance/mystery t h a t e x p l o r e s the impact of the

paranormal realm on house hunting. She’s also written two children’s stories, one her mother asked her to write about a puppy that gets lost in Denali Park and another about her beautiful, enchanting, roley-poley, green-eyed black cat. She is from Alaska, born in Anchorage, and will be reading from her book Banshee.

Jim Durkee is a keen observer of both people and nature. Writing, photography and travel have been his avocations for over twenty years. Although his "day job" is oversight in computers and networks at the University of Alaska, he finds that understanding people is more important than understanding machines even when supporting technology. Most of his recent writings are centered on people and travel. His travels range from hiking trails around Fairbanks, Alaska to visiting over twenty-five other countries. His favorite place to gain writing inspiration is in an airplane several thousand feet above the ground. The Fairbanks Community Writers group has provided invaluable help in their critical reviews of his work and their willingness to the facilitate growth and development of his writing skills.

His future writing plans include developing stories for story tellers, writing short plays and, of course, even more travel with a notebook and camera at the ready.

Joyce Clark was born and raised in Oregon, she came to Alaska 29 years ago from Washington State. She has seven children and many grand and great grandchildren!

She graduated in 1986 from SOU (Southern Oregon University, Ashland, Oregon) with a BA in History and a BA in Education. She worked for Women in Crisis and for ALPA, retiring in 2000.

She has written for most of her life--poetry, short stories, essays and plays. She wrote a short story that was converted into a one act play and presented by the 8x10 group. Another play was performed by The Living Waters Theater Group in Soldotna. She has has been published in several publications, including If We'd Wanted Quiet We Would Have Raised Goldfish and two anthologies published by the writing group.

Volunteers donate their time, energy and skills in many ways to Fairbanks Arts Association. These volunteers are a crucial part of ensuring FAA’s success. We are currently seeking new volunteers to become a docent in the Bear Gallery and Gift Shop in the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts. This position involves working a four-hour shift while greeting gallery visitors, answering questions they may have about Fairbanks or the gallery and working as a cashier when items are purchased. This is a great opportunity for people who enjoy meeting new people, seeing the exhibits, and working as the “face” of Fairbanks Arts Association. If you are interested and available between 12-4pm or 4-8pm any day day of the week please contact Maria at (907) 456-6485 ext 223.

I volunteer for the Fairbanks Arts Association because I enjoy being surrounded by art and the Association needs this help. The Bear Gallery Exhibits change monthly and the Gift Shop has beautiful craft items for sale. The patrons who come to see the exhibits are very nice and interesting Alaskans or tourists. The staff of FAA is very helpful and nice to their volunteers. The cutest question that comes up occasionally is “where are the bears?”

I have volunteered for the Bear Gallery for several years. I am retired from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District where I worked for several decades. I have lived in Fairbanks since 1963 and my children were all raised in Alaska and are still living here. Three in Fairbanks and one in Anchorage. I have twelve grandchildren and feel so lucky that I could be closer to them than only as a sporadic visitor.
