Grass Roots Talk

Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this 3rd round tie of The Carlsberg Sponsored FA VASE

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Norwich United

to Tring for the first time, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us,

and have a safe trip back afterwards.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Referee- Mr Alex

Gray and his assistants Mr Lee Brennan & Mr Casper Wick.

Today's match is sponsored by our Chairman- Mick Eldridge and we would

like to thank him for his continued support.

Our guests today are having a great season so far. They have won 14 of

their 16 league games and sit well clear at the top of The Eastern Counties

League.

They are sure to give us a tough game but if at our best we can compete

with most teams at this level as we showed last Saturday at Wembley,

where we won 2-0.

We changed things around on Tuesday to rest some tired legs and were

undone by a very skillful and well coached Hadley side. Former Spurs star

Micky Hazard has got them playing some very attractive football and has

pulled in some top class players. The scorer of their second goal having

played for Arsenal in The Champions League.

The reserves are without a game today. The A's are in action on the top

pitch in The West Herts Senior Cup and the B's are in action in the league

at Harpendon Rovers.

The Under 15's play in The Herts County Cup tomorrow. The under 18's

are at home on Wednesday against Luton Cedars.

Providing a replay is not required from today's game, the First team travel

to Stotfold on Tuesday and then are back here next Saturday against

Ampthill Town.

Finally enjoy the game and give your support to all involved

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s

The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected. South Midlands-The 90’s.

In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game.

The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium

We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award.

Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Page 7: FA Vase Tring Athletic v Norwich United

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position.

However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time

Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy.

However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves.

SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players.

SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

ABOUT THE FA VASE

The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between ‘amateur’ and ‘professional’ footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England. Two-hundred and twenty clubs entered The Vase in its first season but they didn’t include those clubs which had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocated to The FA Trophy. For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley. The first Vase Finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000. Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its ‘elite’ clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two of them. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack. Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals. The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley has hosted 34 finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins. Aficionados of the competition rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the Third Round, but they embarked on a spectacular Vase journey that took them all the way from the First Round to The Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the Dorset side fought back to win 5-3. When the Vase Final returned to Wembley a record 36,232 fans saw Truro City beat AFC Totton 3-1. Whitley Bay, the 2002 winners, achieved a sensational hat-trick of Final victories from 2009 to 2011. The Northern League's dominance continued for two more seasons, with success for Dunston UTS and Spennymoor Town but Sholing, the Wessex League Champions, are the proud holders of the Vase.

Page 10: FA Vase Tring Athletic v Norwich United

The History of Norwich United- The Club was founded in 1903 as Poringland and District F C as a village side 5 miles from Norwich.

The Club played in the Norwich & District League before joining the newly formed

Anglian Combination in 1965. After winning the Norfolk Junior Cup in 1979 beating

Bradenham Wanderers 5-2, in 1981 beating Wroxham Reserves both at Carrow Road

and the Anglian Combination Junior League Cup in 1981 3-2 against Acle, senior

status was achieved for the first time in our history in 1982. Also in 1983/84 season we

won the Anglian Combination Senior Cup beating Bradenham Wanderers 2-1.

Continuing success forced the Club to move to the Gothic Social Club in Norwich for

the 1985/86 season, a campaign that saw us lose 4-1 to Norwich City Reserves at

Carrow Road in the Norfolk Senior Cup. A year later we reached the final again only to

lose yet again 2-1 to Great Yarmouth.

In 1987 the Club changed its name to Norwich United and Paul Chick was appointed

manager. In his first season we finished runners up in the Anglian Combination Premier

Division, the following season we won the coveted Sterry Cup.

Norwich United joined the Jewson League Division One in 1989/90 season and

finished runners up. Unable to be promoted due to ground facilities we won Division

One the following season and moved to our current ground at Plantation Park for the

1991/92 season in the Premier Division. We finished 5th in the league and surpassed

our ambitions by winning the Jewson League Cup beating Gorleston 5-2 after a 2-2

draw at Carrow Road.

Season 2001/02 was to prove very memorable, for after spending some time back in

Division One, Paul Franklin in his first season as manager assisted by Donny Pye won

the Division One title and lost to Clacton in the semi-final of the League Cup. So once

again Premier Division football was back at Plantation Park.

Season 2005/06 saw The Planters reach the Final of The Norfolk Senior Cup at

Carrow Road, only to lose 1-0 To Dereham Town.

The Club owes much of it's success to the continuing support of Club Chairman Mr.

John Hilditch, President Mr.Michael Miles and Vice Chairman Mr. Peter Bowyer.

MATCH REPORT – TUESDAY 2 DECEMBER 2014

HERTS SENIOR CUP - 2ND ROUND

TRING ATHLETIC (0) 0 HADLEY (1) 2

CUP EXIT

A goal in each half saw our guests deservedly go through to the next round of the Herts Senior Cup. But this was a game we could have done without, with an important fixture coming up at the weekend Managers Julian and Ian found themselves between a rock and hard place. This was a game we wanted to win but with Norwich United due on Saturday for a big FA Vase game we didn't want any players getting injured.

Julian and Ian therefore took a pragmatic decision to make a few changes to the line-up and formation and rest a few players, particularly Chris Vardy our leading scorer. Despite these changes we started strongly and Hadley didn't get out of their half for the first 6 minutes. We hustled them into some mistakes and Taylor Collins seized on a slack pass and would have put us ahead after only 2 minutes but for a very good save from visiting keeper Tom Le Tissier who used his feet to keep the shot out.

But Hadley are a good side having won 5 of their last 6 games and they soon settled into their smooth passing stride encouraged their manage Micky Hazard, a former Spurs and Chelsea favourite. In their ranks they had Jernade Meade who was clearly a class act and it was no surprise to learn that he had played in the Champions League for Arsenal and had also been at Swansea and Luton. Still only 22 he is obviously capable of playing at a much higher level.

The game was fairly even with both sides playing some nice football but there was a lack of goal mouth action and neither keeper was overly stretched. Dom Petrucci tried his luck with a strong shot which Jack Hopwood saved easily and then Jack had to be quick to snatch the ball away from Meade, who later went on a good run before shooting wide.

In the 33rd minute the deadlock was broken when Kieron Smith was played through. He seemed to hesitate as Jack came out from his goal and Chris Salmon managed to get a great tackle in, unfortunately the ball was directed into the net. Technically it was an own goal but it was awarded to Smith. Score 0-1.

We hadn't threatened the opposition goal since the early chance but with 6 minutes to go to half time we had a great opportunity to level the scores. Paul Jeffrey whipped over one of his trade mark crosses which Ollie Butler got to but unfortunately his header went over the bar.

Half Time: Tring Athletic 0 Hadley 1

Soon after the restart Smith sent a shot into the side netting and Ryan Sturges lobbed a loose ball over the bar. In the 56th minute Jack Hopwood was forced into making a great save from Meade after the play maker had worked his way into the area with a nice one two with a colleague. But our relief was short lived as from the resulting corner the diminutive Meade threw himself horizontally to spectacularly head home. Score 0-2.

Page 12: FA Vase Tring Athletic v Norwich United

We now had a tough task on our hands and so we threw on Dan Steadman and Chris Vardy to shake things up a bit and for a while it worked. We started to take the game to our opponents and chances were created but regrettably not taken. The Hadley keeper dropped a high ball but was rescued by his defender who headed Ryan Sturges shot off the line. From the short corner Paul Jeffrey's cross hit the top of the bar. Chris Vardy added a new dimension to our game and he was denied a couple of times by some great last ditched tackles from defender Tanasheh Abrahams.

We had to be aware of Hadley's counter attacks and Jack Hopwood did well to tip over a superb long range shot from the impressive Nick Chrysanthou. We thought a goal was going to arrive in the 70th minute when Greg Deer found Chris Vardy unmarked at the far post with a superb cross. But Vardy's header drifted inches wide of the far post with Kieran Turner seemingly leaving it thinking it was going in. Three minutes later Paul Jeffrey picked out Taylor Collins with a precise free kick but from close range the teenager headed over.

After those chances went begging we seemed to run out of ideas and steam and Hadley went on to book their place in the next round where we wish them every success.

Full Time: Tring Athletic 0 Hadley 2

Our minds now turn to Saturday when hopefully we will have a big crowd for a big match against Norwich United who are flying in the Eastern Counties League. They top the Premier Division by 6 points and have lost only 3 games out of 25 in all competitions. We have the chances for some glory (and prize money!) and the chance to make history because we have never been beyond the 3rd round before.

It will be tough but we are capable of turning in good performances as we showed in our terrific 2-0 win against a very strong Wembley side last Saturday so lets give the lads plenty of support at the weekend.

TAFC Reserve team 1-4 Corinthians TAFC goals: Stewart King

The Reserves came up against a very strong Corinthian side on Saturday and, after a brave battling display, particularly in the first half - fell short when they tired at the end and were

on the receiving end of some excellent finishes in the last 10 minutes. They had to draft in Keith Eldridge to play in goal and Keith performed admirably, pulling

off several excellent saves during the game, that was - for 60 minutes - an excellent contest.

Tring fell behind immediately when they failed to attack the ball from a corner and left a free man in the box - who netted.

Slowly Tring began to find their feet - shame the same couldn't be said for Tom Cullimore who went to clear a ball and ending up flat on his face in the Hertfordshire mud.

Stewart King went clean through but blasted high and wide. Then, on 30 mins, assisted by James Butler, he went through again and rounded the keeper to finish with aplomb. 1-1.

Tring were on top. Ollie Butler prodded and probed and nearly scored with a delightful chip - a la Glenn Hoddle for Spurs against Watford in the 1980's - but the keeper managed

to tip the ball onto the bar. Half Time - TAFC 1 Corinthian 1

Corinthian came out of the traps and were all over Tring in the second half. Eldridge made a fine save at the feet of a striker but the slick passing and movement of the away team was

bound to bear fruit soon. And it did with a striker cutting in from the right and blasting the ball home.

Tring plugged away and had some spells of pressure. If 16 year old Joe Fitzgerald overcomes his shyness and lack of confidence (ahem) he will be an excellent prospect and

he did very well covering at left back. Naylor went close, King went close again but Corinthian were playing some splendid football on the break - which Tring were simply not used to - and Tring themselves did not possess the same clinical nature in the final third.

Tring conceded 2 more late on but could have no complaints.

Team - Eldridge, Cullimore T (Stroud), Fitzgerald, Salmon D, Smethers, Butler J, Aird (Naylor), Hogg, King, Dunstan (Cullimore J), Butler O.

MATCH REPORT – SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2014

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE - PREMIER DIVISION

WEMBLEY (0) 0 TRING ATHLETIC (1) 2

TRIUMPH AT WEMBLEY

We secured a terrific victory at a place that is synonymous worldwide with English football, but on this occasion it was at the local club rather than the national stadium! But the sight of the famous Wembley Arch nearby may have been the inspiration behind one of our best performances this season against a strong side who could have a say in the title race.

This was our first ever visit and game against Wembley who did a side ways transfer from Combined Counties League where they finished 9th in the Premier Division last season. The ground was lovely and the pitch looked flat with a good playing surface although the recent wet weather made the conditions soft.

We have not done well in the League recent with only 5 points picked up from the last 8 games so this going to be a tough encounter against a side doing well in their first season in the South Midlands. At the start of play they were 7th in the table but that was misleading as they have games in hand on all the clubs above them and would undoubtedly have a big say in the title race.

Wembley were Captained by Ian Bates who was making his 950th appearance for the Club which is a magnificent achievement especially when you consider how players move around from club to club for a few pounds. We were told that he will be 41 soon but despite his age he was at the heart of Wembley's best moves.

We had to make a few changes with Greg Deer unavailable, Ollie Butler having a run out in the Reserves and Stewart King still out injured. Matt Evans was also absent through injury so in stepped Jack Hopwood to make his debut in goal and the 18 year looked very assured and did very well.

The home side stated well and played a lot of good football with Ian Bates always making himself available and rarely making a bad pass. There was a lot of good movement from their forwards and their leading scorer Yassine Fehmi-Gil was a constant threat but despite this they were unable to dent our rock solid defence.

They were presented with an opportunity when they won a free kick in a promising position but Fehmi-Gil merely found Jack Hopwood's midriff. Later another free kick this time from further out offered another possible threat but again they failed to threaten our goal.

As the half wore on we started to trouble their defence with our quick counter attacks and Bart Fogler had to rush out from his goal to deny Taylor Collins and then Kevin McManus did well to create some space near the box but his shot went well wide of the far post. It was then the turn of our other wing back Paul Jeffrey to have an attempt on goal after a quick break led by Chris Vardy gave him a sight of goal and he went very close with his fierce shot whizzing just past the far post.

With just 10 minutes to go before the interval we won our 4th corner and when it was only partially cleared back to Paul Jeffrey who whipped it back into the area for Chris Salmon to

score. It was a bit of a scruffy goal but it gave us a precious lead which we held onto until the break. Half Time Score 0-1.

Page 25: FA Vase Tring Athletic v Norwich United

Wembley showed they meant business by bringing on their second top scorer Joe Wright at the start of the second period, and he was soon in the action heading over a good cross from Alex Witham after a fine move down the right.

Wembley were looking more dangerous than in the first half and Alex Witham had a shooting opportunity from a poor clearance but his effort went well wide. The home side were building up a head of steam but our defence was resolute with every player putting in a tremendous amount of work and commitment which restricted Wembley to half chances.

Joe Wright, who has found the net on 15 occasions so far this season, was then presented with Wembley's best chance of the match in the 55th minute when a slide rule pass from Bates sent him into the area but he shot past Jack Hopwood and the post. Wembley were enjoying their best spell of the game and Fehmi-Gil went on a good run and whilst his shot was block it fell to Witham who dragged his shot wide. Then a free kick was headed wide by defender Wayne Walters.

With the home side pressing forward they were looking vulnerable at the back and we were always a threat on the break. In the 64th minute Kevin McManus won the ball then fed Chris Vardy who slipped a lovely pass through to Taylor Collins. The youngster had too much pace for the defender and he ran through and calmly tucked the ball away to give us a crucial second goal. Score 0-2.

Wembley frantically pushed forward in search of a goal but were finding it tough to get through our defensive line and when they did Jack Hopwood looked assured making one good save late on at the foot of the post from Fehmi-Gil. Witham whipped over a dangerous cross cum shot that went wide of the far post and centre back Adam Humphries headed a free kick over but these were more half chances than genuine scoring opportunities.

Kevin McManus and Paul Jeffrey both had super games down the flanks and when Kevin sent over a terrific cross it seemed certain that either Chris Vardy or Taylor Collins would snap it up but somehow it eluded both of them. Chris Salmon got on the end of a corner and the keeper was forced to tip his shot over the bar.

Vinnie Iannone and Kieran Turner came on for Taylor Collins and Ryan Sturges and Vinnie almost made an immediate impact when showing great skill and strength he nearly managed to wriggle his way through from the bye line. We kept our concentration going right to the end as the home side ran out of ideas to run out very worthy winners. Full Time Score 0-2.

A terrific performance from the lads who seem to perform better away from home with only 2 League defeats on the road this season. Everyone played well but a special mention for the unsung heroes in central midfield namely Trevor Gibbs, Ryan Sturges and Sam Joliffe who worked their socks off to provide an effective shield for the defence.

Team: 1 Jack Hopwood 2 Kevin McManus 3 Paul Jeffrey 4 Dan Steadman 5 Chris Salmon (Capt) 6 Adam Toone 7 Sam Joliffe 8 Trevor Gibbs 9 Chris Vardy 10 Taylor Collins (16 Vinnie Iannone 82) 11 Ryan Sturges (14 Kieran Turner 82). Subs not used: 12 Ryan McMahon 15 Michael Green 17 Matt Evans.

League

TAFC Youth Team 4-1 Chesham United TAFC goals: Joe Naylor (3), James Hogg

Wednesday 12th November saw The Grass Roots Stadium host the SCFYL derby match between local

rivals Tring Athletic & Chesham United.

Both sides having gained 12 league points apiece, went into the game looking to also extend their

unbeaten runs and make further upward progress in the league.

The opening period of the game saw both sets of players trying to find their rhythm and composure.

Opportunities to exploit were hard to come by as the defensive units on either side of the pitch looked

accomplished and very comfortable in dealing with any problems they had to deal with and scoring

chances were at a real premium

However, on the half hour, Tring’s young and pacey striker, Jack Blair forced the visitor’s keeper into

making a good save with a fierce cross shot and it was Blair’s run and pass with five minutes of the half

remaining that provided his striking partner Joe Naylor, with the chance to go on and beat the keeper with a great finish to make it 1-0 to the home side.

The mood in the home dressing room at half-time was one of cautious optimism. The whole squad knew

that if they kept their work-rate, positive mentality and composure at a consistently high level throughout the remaining 45 minutes they would certainly get something out of the fixture.

The start of the second half once again saw a lot of industry and hard work from both sets of players but it

was Tring who once again had the sharper cutting edge in front of goal and predatory Joe Naylor was once again on hand to apply the finishing touch to claim his and the home side’s second to make it 2-0.

This seemed to have roused the visitors from their slumbers, who after having conceded 2 goals, started to

play their best football of the match, pushing Tring further and further into their own half and applying pressure all over the park. Failure on one occasion by Tring to clear properly was cruelly punished as

Chesham scored to bring them back into the game and this was now the right time to see what sort of

character the home side had when confronted by a setback. 2-1

To their immense credit Tring responded extremely positively and took the game to their opponents who,

throughout the 90 minutes, could not handle the pace of Naylor and when a through ball went through to

the young striker halfway through the second half he gleefully went onto convert for a well-deserved hat-

trick and present the home side yet again with a 2 goal margin. 3-1.

Tring were not yet finished and from a run and cross from debutant Tino Leone down the left flank, the

ball eventually found its way to James Hogg who scored from close range to make it 4-1. The result not

only put the seal on a great performance from the whole squad, it also gave them 3 points and gave notice to other teams in the league that Tring are now a force to be reckoned with!!

There were some great individual performances on the night and the squad’s confidence is beginning to

grow with every positive result gained. Their unbeaten run now extends to six matches and although not one of the “prettier footballing” sides to watch their work-rate and commitment is unquestionable and

most opposition will now not relish playing them.
