FA LA LA LAND A Creative Musical For Young Voices by Teresa Jennings and Karl Hitzemann Rodgers and Hammerstein. Lennon and McCartney. Bacharach and David. Webber and Rice. Goffin and King... The list goes on and on. After all, songwriting collaborations – where one person writes the music and another writes the lyrics – have been around for ages. And with some really wonderful results, we might note. But then it begs the question: Where would the music be without the lyrics? And where would the lyrics be without the music? Ah! Where indeed? To answer this, we visit the songwriters of Fa La La Land, who are actively engaged in creating their latest cooperative effort for the upcoming holiday season. Alas, sometimes things might be said or done that would compromise not only progress, but partnerships, and even friendships as well. Such is the case with the Composers and the Lyricists this particular holiday season when, in an innocent exchange, a cavalier comment or two about which aspect of songwriting is more important leads to unpleasant disagreement and discord. Not to mention a total lack of harmony! How can they possibly continue to work together under these circumstances? Thank goodness reason prevails when the Maestro, who is scheduled to conduct Fa La La Land’s latest, but as-of-yet elusive song, intervenes. She reminds both groups of the overall good of their work together and its importance for the season. But more than that, she shares a message of peace, forgiveness, love, and friendship – especially at this time of year! Both groups not only realize the folly of their negative behavior, they also realize that in order to provide a song that’s positive and uplifting, they should lead by example. Apologies and reconciliations abound and the groups are back at it, happily writing the big song together, as they should be. And which, of course, turns out to be the finale of our little musical here. Approximately 20 minutes long, the musical includes five original songs and a lighthearted script with short, easy-to-learn lines for your students. Songs include: A Musical Time Of Year; Music Is Our Thing; Not With Me; When We Get Along; and Good, Good Holiday Feelings! As with all of our revues and musicals, there is a thoughtfully designed Teacher’s Guide, with lots of suggestions for making a great performance. Also included are reproducible Singer’s Parts, lyric sheets, posters, and program covers. SPIRIT OF THE SEASONA Joyous Collection For Young Voicesby Teresa & Paul Jennings, and John Riggio

MUSIC K-8 magazine has always been the source ofunique holiday songs that become memorable favorites ofyoung singers and their audiences. We are pleased to offeryou a diverse collection of these songs that have receivedgreat responses from the teachers who used them. You’llappreciate the options for solos, part singing, movement, orbells with these songs selected from the pages of MUSIC K-8 magazine.

Spirit Of The Season includes:• This Holiday - Kick off your holiday program with

this joyous, high energy tune. The lyrics are filled withiconic seasonal imagery and themes like candles, twinkling lights, holiday spirit, singing, and peace. Thesong works well in unison, but if you can add theoptional second part, the reward is worth the effort. Thistune also includes an optional bells part.

• Here Comes The Snow - This unique pop hybridtune requires a bit of musical finesse, but the challenge isfun. While part 2 is optional, the inclusion is whatmakes it so great. Each part attacks the word “snow” like

a bell being struck – with an accent followed by immediate decay. When done together, the effect is striking. The pounding “4 on the floor” pulse gives way to a floating halftime beat, and the use of the stomps and clapsgives it a unique sound.

• Let’s Make It Shine! - This lively, Broadway-style song is full of energy, joy, and anticipation of a holidayseason filled with light. It’s a great opening song for your seasonal performance, but it will certainly add pizzazzto any part of your program. It builds and soars, with an ongoing pulse that keeps the musical excitement high.It works well as a unison piece, but the optional second part really makes it sparkle.

• Mister Frosty Winter - With this winter tune, we bring together a swinging partner song in minor mode,a great old jazz style, a cool big band playing the recorded tracks, and optional choreography. This is a song youcan perform in any winter concert. It will help your students practice articulation and enunciation, and itincludes a bonus choreography video!

• Season Of Bells - Not only is this joyful swing tune the perfect way to begin a holiday program, it’s also awonderful way to feature your bell players. The melody and lyrics are light, fun, and easy. We have provided writtenparts for Bells 1, which uses the whole C scale; Bells 2, which uses only C, D, G, and C'; and jingle bells. Addmovement and you have a real showcase on your hands!

• Mostly What I Wish For - This beautiful ballad harkens back to some of the popular holiday ballads ofthe past several decades. Expressive, lovely, heartfelt, and containing a tiny hint of the bittersweet, you mightfind yourself with a lump in your throat when you sing it. While it was written to be performed by a group ofsingers, it would certainly be appropriate to use a soloist for this song. Let young singers join in behind yoursoloist here and there as you desire.

• O Come Little Children - This arrangement done in a Celtic style begins with a lively motif that featuresfiddle and penny whistle, strings, and lots of big drums. The melody is the one you grew up with and is alsocovered on piano and nylon guitar for reinforcement. As a bonus, we’ve recorded both secular and sacred lyricsto this song. UGLY SWEATERS & OTHERFESTIVE FUNA Lighthearted Collection For Young Voicesby Teresa Jennings and John Riggio

Ah, winter and the holidays! The serenity andpeacefulness of the season... well, that’s not in thiscollection. Sometimes it’s just fun to be silly, relax, andlet your guard down. This terrific collection bringstogether seven hits from the pages of MUSIC K-8magazine that will help you do just that.

You and your students will have a wonderful timeentertaining audiences with these clever songs. Thereare even opportunities for adding movement andchoreography to make it more exciting. This fun-lovingcollection includes:

• Ugly Sweater - What’s beautiful to one personmay be ugly to someone else. This song addresses bothpoints of view in a comical way. Set in a forebodingclassical style, the song really needs both parts 1 and 2,as they play off each other. Fortunately, the parts aren’ttoo difficult.

• Turn Off That Nose! - Oh, sure. That famous rednose may have saved Christmas when it was foggy onetime. But how often does that happen? In themeantime, it just keeps glowing and blinking all the

time. How’s anyone supposed to sleep with that going on? This lighthearted rock tune approaches the nosesituation from a whole other perspective, asking the reindeer to please, “Turn off that nose!” The key toperforming this easy unison song is to do so with comical intent. If you really want to make this one stand out, consider adding movement to it.

• I Know About Snow - This homage to the fluffy white stuff is pretty fun to sing. It’s set in a retro rock ’n’roll style, complete with bari sax and electric guitar with classic effects. The first time through, it’s sung inunison. Then, we introduce part 2, and while this is optional, it’s really cool. You might even want to add a fewjingle bells to enhance it accordingly.

• Hip Hop Elves - A few years back, we published a song called “Hip Hop Reindeer,” which turned out tobe a favorite for kids. But who says only reindeer can enjoy hip hop? What about the elves? Well, now theyhave their very own feature, too! It’s written in a relatively simple style so that you can vary which gradesperform it as needed. We have included some optional movement suggestions right on the music, too.Costumes also would be the perfect addition to a performance of this tune.

• A Kitty For A Present - This whimsical holiday tune has all the outward appearance of a cute little songabout getting a kitty. Despite its seemingly normal beginnings, it digresses into silliness by the end of the firstverse and spirals downward from there. In a lighthearted and wholesome way, of course.

• I Want Some Pumpkin Pie - This is not “Chopsticks” in its purest form, but it’s pretty close. Studentswill really have fun singing this familiar tune with the very imaginative lyrics. But this is not really about“Chopsticks” anyway. It’s about the pie! Comedy is the thing, as your singers should become more intense asthe song goes along, displaying the proper amount of frenzy and angst. You can sing it for Thanksgiving orChristmas, or anytime pumpkin pie is being served.

• Rock The Holly - What a great way to liven up your holiday performance. We’ll bet your audience willeven get in on the act, if not singing along, certainly clapping along. Maybe even dancing along! The retrorockabilly style is oh-so-fun and oh-so-familiar. Rock your tootsies, too! Add movement to your performancewith the help of the choreography video that includes a full demonstration and step-by-step instruction. A JOYOUS SEASON FORRECORDERSA Holiday Collection For Young Playersarr. Paul Jennings

Every winter season, many teachers look for a specialtune for their big concert. That’s why we have created somany distinctive selections for your recorder programs, including these six works here.

Each of these arrangements has two soprano parts, oneharder and close to the melody and one easier, either justrequiring B, A, G, C or just B, A, G. In addition, all of thetunes have an optional part for alto recorder. From thepages of MUSIC K-8 magazine and RECORDERCLASSROOM, A Joyous Season For Recorders includes:

• Joyous Prelude - This symphonic prelude is basedon J. S. Bach’s striking “Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring.” Forour arrangement, we have three recorder parts: a sopranopart that plays mainly the melody of the sustained section, using D, G, A, B, C, and D'; an optional soprano part thatcan be played with only G, A, and B; and an optional altorecorder part using G, C, D, E, F#, and G'.

• Finlandia – A Hymn To Winter - Finlandia is asymphonic poem written by Jean Sibelius. While this workis complex, it has been nicely adapted for recorder. It’s setfor two soprano recorders (one easy and the other, a bitharder) and for an optional alto recorder. Soprano 1requires low D, G, A, B, C, D', and E' (optional);

Soprano 2 only requires G, A, B, and C; and the alto part calls for B, C, D, E, and G. Of course, it can beconvincingly played just using the easiest, part 2, or any combination of the parts.

• Saga Of The Three Ships - This unique performance piece can be played by even young, beginning players. The arrangement itself is a study in contrasts. The orchestra ebbs and flows until the recorders enter to play themelody in a slow quarter note fashion, instead of the traditional 6/8 version, making it accessible for beginners.Part 1 uses the notes D, E, G, A, B, C, and D'. Part 2 uses the notes G, A, B, and C. There’s also an optional altorecorder part using A, B, C, D, and E.

• Quest Of The Three Kings - Sounding like the soundtrack from a forgotten Cecil B. DeMille epic, we arejust setting the mood for one of our favorite carols, “We Three Kings Of Orient Are.” Our arrangement is set forfull orchestra with three recorder parts: two sopranos and one alto. The first soprano part stays close to the melodyusing the notes D, E, F#, G, A, B, C, and D', while the second optional part requires only G, A, and B. The altopart is suitable for a beginner alto player and uses G, A, B, C, D, E, and G'.

• Fantasy On An Old French Carol - This arrangement of “Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” can accommodateyour beginning students, more advanced players, and/or alto recorders in any combination. Recorder 1 is for yourmore advanced players, including the notes low D, G, A, B, C, high D, and, optionally, high E. Recorder 2 onlyrequires G, A, and B, and it will sound great with just those players. The optional alto recorder part only uses G,C, D, and G'.

• Ode To Joy - Many of the most popular recorder methods feature melodies from classical literature, butprobably the most common one is the “Ode To Joy” from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. One reasonthis theme is so common is that it is so powerful and it actually can be played by younger players. Our carefullycrafted arrangement lets your more advanced students play the melody using G, A, B, C, low D, and high D, whileyour younger players are only required to play B, A, and G. There is also an optional alto recorder part. Estimated release date: August 31, 2017

RISE UP SINGING!Songs For African American History Montharr. Paul Jennings

Since the time before the Civil War and in the 150years since, the African American culture has mademany lasting contributions to life in this country andall over the world. That’s why we have assembled theseeight great arrangements that give you strongprogramming across the genre of African Americanmusic. From spirituals to anthems to the roots of jazz, you will find songs that inspire and uplift all yearround. While many of these settings are fairlystraightforward and unison, and all are orchestratedappropriate to the tune, there are several outstanding 3-part mixed arrangements that have already becomeconcert favorites. From the pages of MUSIC K-8magazine, Rise Up Singing! includes:

• Down By The Riverside - For this arrangement,we have used an up-tempo gospel setting a bitmodernized with the addition of our screaming windsection, blues guitar, and a gospel organ. It is arrangedin a traditional 3-part mixed voicing.

• Follow The Drinking Gourd - This “code song”is probably one of the most dramatic to have surviveduntil today and is an excellent song for a unit on the

Underground Railroad. Our version is arranged in a singable folk style.• Get On Board - In recent years this has become a popular children’s song, always fun to sing because of

the rhythmic vitality of the chorus. For this arrangement, we have done our own adaptation of the lyrics tomake them appropriate for any school.

• Yonder Come Day - This great spiritual from the Georgia Sea Islands gives you both a new perspectiveon music for African American History Month and a 3-part arrangement appropriate for your older students. It combines a traditional concert approach, opening with an evocative orchestral prelude, leading to buildingvoices over hand claps.

• One More River - This wonderful old spiritual can be used as part of African American HistoryMonth or just because it is a favorite call and response tune. As with quite a few traditional tunes, there aremany possible variations on lyrics and performance.

• Go Down Moses - This unique arrangement combines a concert approach to the tune as well as agospel swing setting. It starts dramatically with full orchestra and winds down into a fairly traditional settingof the song. The vocal arrangement is set up so that it can be performed either as 3-part mixed or as a unison arrangement.

• Lift Every Voice And Sing - This powerful song was written by James Weldon Johnson and his brotherJ. Rosamond Johnson for the celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday in 1900. The orchestration is meantto sound as if it were a turn-of-the-century theater orchestra.

• This Little Light Of Mine - For this much-requested song, we chose the version we knew the best, anddid it in a popular gospel style which is a joy to play or sing. We use four verses, the fourth verse being a“bring it home” version of the first verse with an extended ending. It’s difficult not to move and clap duringthis song!

JOLLY OLD CANON IN D adapted/arr. Teresa JenningsBased on her sense of keen observation and grasp of the incredibly

obvious, Teresa has finally decided to give in to marrying the two pieces,Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” and the traditional Christmas tune, “Jolly OldSt. Nicholas.” The result, as you might imagine, is a lighthearted homageto the old fellow in red, who thankfully has a good sense of humor.Though the arrangement is written with 3-part mixed voicing, allowingolder, changing, and changed voices to shine, it could also be used as a 2-part piece, in case that makes Santa more jolly at your school or church.

THIS MAGIC SEASON by Teresa JenningsThis extremely pleasant song will work well as an opener or featured “big

tune” in your Christmas, holiday, winter, or seasonal performances. The lyricsunderscore that sense of a “feeling” more than anything tangible. Written incut time, the tune clips along pretty quickly, though it maintains a ratherrelaxed groove. It has a lot of energy, but it’s understated, which is prettysubtle and even sophisticated for kids. especially when the content to be learned is a finite list. This song includes a recurringrefrain and verses that contain the names of the fifty states, in alphabetical order.
